PHILLIPS ON SUNDAY Not only his own vicinity, but this entire section of the county was shocked at the news of the tragic death of Mr. J.H. (Tobe) Phillips which occurred at his home at Bacon Level about 8 o'clock Sunday morning. Death was caused by a pistol shot throug the head, fired by the hand of the deceased. It was understood that he was considerably worried for days past, but it was not known that he would become thus overbalanced. The Phillips family are well known and esteemed people and they have the warmest sympathy of all of their friends. Interment and funeral services were at Bacon Level Baptist church. Dr. Ward and another minister from Camp Hill and Rev. C. Orear took part in the services which were attended by a large company. ---- MR. AND MRS. ALSOBROOK HAVE GOLDEN WEDDING Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Alsobrook celebrated on December 6th their Golden Wedding anniversary at their lovely home near Five Points. A large number of relatives were present to enjoy the occasion including all the children except one. Dr. Hawkins spoke beautiful words in again taking the vows of this honored couple. A fine dinner was served. The occasion was a delightful one. --- ANNOUNCEMENT OF APPROACHING MARRIAGE Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Ingram of Lineville announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Miss Wilian to Mr. Henry Maddox Brittain of Roanoke, the marriage to be solemnized on Thursday afternoon, Dec. 15th at the home of the bride's parents. ---- LOCAL News R.L. Burgess from Wheeling, West Virginia is here visiting his wife and children. --- Mrs. J.W. Boyle from Los Angeles, Calif., is here visiting her sister Mrs. R.L. Burgess. --- O.B. Caldwell and family returned Monday from the Pan Handle, Texas where they spent one year. --- Mrs. Boone has returned with her mother from Big Springs, Georgia. The latter, Mrs. Josie Bruce of Camp Hill will remain here some days on a visit. --- Mrs. J.P. Radney Jr. and infant son Ridgley Dexter Radney will arrive Friday from Roswell, New Mexico where the baby was born at the home of the former's parents some weeks ago. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 14, 1921 MALONE News Dec. 13th Mr. Henry Windsor and Miss Dicie Camp were united in marriage Dec. 10th at LaGrange. --- LOWELL News Mr. Arthur Henderson and Miss Verna Lee Chewning went to Evansville today and were married. --- Mr. and Mrs. B.M. Howard and little son Junior, and Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Riley visited their parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Riley on Saturday and Sunday. --- MIKE WILLIAMS DIED SATURDAY AT HIS HOME IN LAFAYETTE Mr. Mike Williams died at his home in LaFayette, Saturday night, following an illness of appendicitis, after having undergone an operation in an effort to prolong his life. The remains were interred Tuesday, being held to await the arrival of a son from New York. Mr. Williams had been clerk of the circuit court for many years and was a most popular gentleman. His wife is a sister of Mr. M.R. Buckalew of Roanoke, who was called to LaFayette by the sad circumstances. It is stated that many years ago when Mr. Williams first entered the race for circuit clerk, a crippled man later announced, whereupon the former promptly withdrew stating that he had two good arms and two good legs and could work for a living. Later Mr. Williams lost one arm and having been elected clerk he held that office without opposition till the day of his death. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. W.O. Terrell spent the latter part of last week with her sister Mrs. Byrd Robertson in West Point whose babe has been quite ill but is now improving. --- W.H. McMurray attended the funeral of his aunt, Mrs. Bart Weaver, who was over 80 years of age. The interment was at Milltown after services conducted by Rev. S.E. Maples and Rev. J.W. Rucker. --- OFELIA News Dec. 12th Mrs. Mary Yates is on the sick list. --- Mr. and Mrs. C.G. Knight of Corinth are visiting their parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Yates. --- NEW HOPE News Dec. 12th "Uncle" Will Henderson was stricken seriously ill yesterday morning. The worst is feared. --- LOCAL News An aged citizen of the Liberty Grove neighborhood, familiarly known as "Uncle Will" Henderson, suffered a second stroke of paralysis on Sunday and is in very critical condition at this writing. --- Mrs. W.B. Gilbert is spending some days in West Point where her little grandchild, the infant of Mr. and Mrs. Byrd Robertson, is ill with pneumonia. --- Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Stuckey of Birmingham, arrived at the home of the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Gregg, some days past. --- Dr. and Mrs. A.J. Gay spent yesterday in Wadley where they attended the celebration of the Golden Wedding anniversary of the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Gay. --- Last week "Uncle" Billy Payne celebrated his 74th birthday. --- ROCK STAND News Dec. 12th "Uncle" Bud Sudduth is very ill at this writing. Blood poisoning seems to be the trouble. --- SWAGG News Dec. 10th Our Sunday school was omitted last Sunday on account of "Grandma" Fowler's funeral. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 21, 1921 DOUBLE TRAGEDY IN WEST POINT LAST SATURDAY In the presence of a large crowd assembled on the streets of West Point, Ga., last Saturday, which had been widely advertised as special trade day, Jesse Wyche of Shawmut, shot and instantly killed policeman Brit Spratling, the oldest man on the force. The officer had offered to arrest Wyche for alleged misconduct when he was shot down by Wyche, who was said to have been drinking. The latter was caught by the chief of police and E.B. Ballard, sales promotor. Wyche was carried to jail in LaGrange. Among the witnesses to the tragedy was Rev. A.C. Yeargan, well known Baptist minister, who resides at Lanett. The shock of the affair caused Mr. Yeargan to fall, striking his head on the pavement. His death followed almost immediately. It is not known whether death was caused by the blow or resulted from apoplexy or heart failure. The funeral for Mr. Yeargan occurred at Daviston on Monday. Several ministers took part in the services which were attended by a large company. Messrs. W.A. Yeargan and J.D. O'Keefe were present from Roanoke. ---- MR. AND MRS. JAMES M. GAY HAVE GOLDEN WEDDING Mr. and Mrs. James M. Gay of Wadley community, observed their "Golden Wedding" on Tuesday, Dec. 13th, being married in 1871. The renewal of these sacred vows was performed by Rev. A.C. Yeargan in the presence of this large family and many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Gay have spent their lives in this community and their friends are as many as their acquaintances. A more congenial couple, having a kind word and a smile for all, can scarcely be found. Mr. and Mrs. Gay have 12 children living, 28 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Two children are dead; one died in infancy; the other was Mrs. R.B. Kilgore who left two children, Dewey Kilgore and Mrs. Gladys Swafford of Ragland. The children are: Robert L. Gay of Wadley Dr. C.P. Gay of Geneva Dr. J.S. Gay of Ashland Mrs. Bradford Killgore of Weogufka Mrs. E.J. Callaway of Birmingham Mrs. E.G. Stone of Birmingham Mrs. R.V. Roberts of Shawmut Dr. Andrew J. Gay of Roanoke Mrs. Awbrey Evans of Mangum, Okla. J.J. Crowder of Shawmut (Mrs.?) Miss Bernice Gay of Langdale Miss Mary Lou Gay of Wadley All of the above were present to add joy to this happy occasion. After these many years of service to God, their children and humanity, they are hale and hearty and bid fair to see many more happy years. When we look over the list of this large family, and see the prominent and useful men and women they have given to the world, we feel that they are honored. Many presents were given them by their friends and loved ones. The social gathering of friends, children and grandchildren was greatly enjoyed by all, and especially by this aged father and mother, which was marked only by the thought that they would hardly ever see them all together again in this life. ----- CARD OF THANKS We take this method through which to thank our neighbors and friends for their kindness shown us at the death of our dear husband and father. We do especially thank Bros. Orear, Fisher and Ward for their beautiful words of comfort. May we all look to the one who can comfort us in our sorrows. Mrs. Julia Phillips and family. ---- LOCAL News A negro named Huguley was landed in jail in LaFayette on Saturday for having cut and seriously wounded a white man, Grady Coggans, at Sandy Ridge in Chambers county. --- HOPEWELL News Dec. 19th Mrs. Eunice Fowler who has been ill for the past few weeks died at the home of her son F. M. Fowler at Swagg. She was doubtless the oldest woman in the county. She was born in South Carolina, Nov 1826. While young she married John Hilborn who was later killed in the Mexican War. Afterwards she married Samuel Fowler. He died in 1862 and left her the mother of eight children. She came to Alabama and all of the children lived to be grown. She joined the M.E. Church many years ago. To mourn her loss she leaves eight children, 58 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren and 4 great- great grandchildren. ---- OFELIA News Dec. 19th Mr. Dewey Floyd who is in school at Lineville is at home on account of his father who lies at the point of death. --- O. Gay, Deputy Sheriff, and Garrett Holloway captured Messrs. Jim Butler and Andy Nelson of Beat 13, charged with distilling. They carried them to the Wedowee jail. --- MT. OLIVE News Dec. 19th Mr. F.M. Burdett is on the sick list at this writing. --- Mr. J.D. Sudduth has been crippled by a tree falling on his foot. --- WOODLAND News Dec. 19th Mrs. J.H. Whitten who has been sick for some time is worse at this writing. --- Mrs. N.B. Green continues very ill. --- ROCK MILLS News Dec. 19th Mrs. Will Adams, who was a good woman, was buried at Wehadkee cemetery last Friday, having died Thursday at her home several miles northwest of Rock Mills. --- NEW HOPE News Dec. 17th "Uncle" Will Henderson, whom we reported last week as being seriously ill, died last Thursday. He was a good citizen and a christian gentleman. He joined the C.M. Church at the age of 17 and died in the triumph of a living faith. Revs. Boggs and Wilder conducted the funeral at Liberty Grove Friday afternoon. --- "Uncle" Bud Carpenter was stricken last Thursday evening with paralysis. Mrs. J.W. Calhoun found him near the Pate bridge and took him to Woodie Carpenter's home where he is yet. He is still in a serious condition. ---- ROCK STAND News Dec. 15th Mr. Billy Hall, late of this vicinity who moved recently, fell dead last Thursday. The interment was at Broughton on Friday. --- WADLEY News Dec. 19th Mr. K.L. Clegg who has been sick for quite a while, is worse. --- ROCK SPRINGS News Dec. 19th "Uncle" George Brown is sick at this writing. --- Mrs. Ethel Sudduth of Birmingham is visiting her mother Mrs. Nannie Osborne. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, December 28, 1921 LOWELL News The following marriages are reported during the past few days: Mr. Dewey Browning to Miss Ruby Simms Grady Baker to Miss Inez Chase Mr. Odel Shearer to Miss Yuna Mae Shelnutt Dutch Knight to Miss Etta Smith John Will Morton to Miss Verna Jeter --- WEDOWEE News Dec. 26th Last Friday at the Stewart Hotel, Prof. J.N. Word and Miss Maude Smith were married. Rev. Mack Prescott officiated. Miss Smith is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.H. Smith of near Wedowee. --- "Uncle" Bud Carpenter of this community was struck with paralysis a few days ago and died Friday evening last at the home of Woodie Carpenter, three miles east of Wedowee. He was laid to rest Saturday at Midway church. Funeral services were conducted by Bro. John William Boggs. Mr. Carpenter was a good citizen and a member of the Methodist church. --- LOCAL News Ross Lane and family were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walt Lane on Tuesday. They are moving to Glenn, Georgia. --- C.E. Warlick had the pleasure of having all his children with him the first three days of Christmas. Those from out of town were his daughter Mrs. J.W. Coppock with her two sons Johnson and William and Miss Ludie Warlick of Columbus and Mr. Warlick's son Lewis of Birmingham. ---- Jim Stephens and Miss Gladys Earnest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Earnest, were married last evening at the home of the bride's parents four miles west of town. Rev. J.D. Dollar was the officiating minister. Many friends of this popular couple will be pleased to learn of their marriage. --- Mrs. A. Walter Burton received the distressing news by wire Monday morning of the sudden death of her brother Dr. H.B. Smith which occurred in the lobby of a hotel in Nashville were the deceased was located. Mr. and Mrs. Burton and their little daughters left that afternoon for Nashville to attend the funeral services. ---- J.N. Mostellar of Ethridge, Tenn., spent the holidays with relatives in this county. --- WEHADKEE News Dec. 26th H.B. Walker has been sick for the past two months and is growing worse. --- Mrs. Stroud, an aged lady, died Sunday morning at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Sanford Shelnutt, following a short illness of pneumonia. Interment will be at Centralhatchee, Georgia. --- ROCK STAND News Dec. 26th A marriage was performed here on Sunday afternoon. The groom was Mr. Durward L. Beverly, one of the finest young men to be found anywhere. He is the son of the late Robert L. Beverly and inherent in his nature are many of his father's noble traits. The bride, Miss Neomie Kirby, is an accomplished young lady, highly cultured and deeply religious. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Kirby. Rev. J.H.
