M.W. MASHBURN DIED LAST WEDNESDAY M. Wesley Mashburn died at his home near Tenant on Wednesday afternoon. His health failed some two or three years ago and his condition grew worse until several days ago and it was realized then that the end was near. He reached the age of 75 and lived a useful life and his community will miss him. He was a faithful member of the M.E. Church and had been for a number of years. He leaves a faithful companion and five children: Mrs. J.W. Perry, Mrs. R.V. Perry, M.M., L.B. and M. Mashburn. Two children preceded him to the better world. Interment was at Midway cemetery this afternoon. His pastor, Rev. J.E. Johnson, conducted the services. The Randolph Star, Jan. 26th ----- REV. JAMES A. COFIELD DIED IN LOWELL ON MONDAY About midnight last Monday night at the home of his son Mr. Robert Cofield in Lowell community, Mr. James A. Cofield died after a long illness. He was in his 76th year and was a Confederate veteran, also a minister in the Baptist church. Among his children surviving including three sons and four daughters is Mr. G.N. Cofield, Sheriff of this county, who was with him when the end came. The remains were taken this morning to Harmony Grove in north Randolph county, the former home of the deceased where interment was made. Rev. C.B. Martin conducted the services. ---- B.F. SIMMS CONVALESCING All the friends of B.F. Simms will be gratified to learn that latest news is that he is now doing as well as could be expected in the Atlanta hospital, where he was taken when one leg was crushed a month ago and where his life was all but despaired of for many days. His father Mr. J.R. Simms who went to Atlanta as soon as the news of the tragedy reached him, has been with him continually ever since, and other members of the family have spent much of the time there. ---- C.E. WARLICK'S SISTER DIES AT FORMER'S HOME Mrs. M.J. Nicholson died Monday morning at the residence of her brother, Mr. C.E. Warlick in this place. Mrs. Nicholson came from Florida some months ago to make her home with her brother. She was a widow, and in her fifty-ninth year. Her health was badly impaired yet her death came with shocking suddenness. Tuesday morning at 11:30 at the home, touching funeral services were conducted over the remains by Rev. Claud Orear, after which they were borne to the depot and shipped by the A.B. & A. Railway to Talking Rock in North Georgia where they will be interred in the burying ground used by the family. Mr. Warlick, his son Lewis and two daughters Misses Ludie and Mary went to attend the last rites. Mrs. Nicholson was a life-long and devoted member of the Methodist church, a woman of christian character and was tenderly loved in the home where she spent her last days. The deceased had four sons living in the West. At least one of them will be able to get to the place of interment in time to be present upon that sad occasion. ----- REV. GEORGE E. BREWER, VETERAN MINISTER DEAD Columbus, Ga., Jan. 24th George E. Brewer, age 89, last surviving member of the Alabama senate who signed the secession bill in 1861, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. B.W. Allen in Columbus on Monday night, following a long illness. He will be buried in Opelika, Ala., on Wednesday. Rev. Mr. Brewer had been a Baptist minister some 60 years, serving many churches in Alabama. He was a prominent Confederate Veteran, having commanded the Forty-Sixth Alabama Regiment during the Civil War. He had been living with his daughter here several years. ----- LOCAL News Mrs. Nancy J. Harris died at the residence of her grandson Tom Burke in this city, yesterday morning. She was 82 years old and had been in feeble health for some time. --- W.B. Cummings of this place had as his guest yesterday his brother F.B. Cummings of Lineville and together they celebrated their birthday, the former being 62 and the latter 60 years of age on that date. --- T.S. Johnson of Newell community was brought to the local sanitarium yesterday, his left leg being badly broken below the knee when his truck ran over him while he was trying to crank it. --- G.M. Strong of Cragford community was brought to Knight Sanitorium on Monday for an operation for appendicitis. He is doing well at this writing. --- Mrs. Maddox Brittain was called to Talladega on Saturday to attend the funeral of her aunt Mrs. James Wilder. --- ABANDA News Jan. 30th Health of this community is good except for Mr. J.T. Bowling, and sorry to say he is not improving very fast. --- Mr. Tommie Sessions left this morning for Mobile. --- Mr. Haygood Tatum is doing some good work on the Abanda and Roanoke road east of Katy creek. We all like good roads. --- NEW HOPE News Jan. 30th Calvin and Harrell Huey are on the sick list. --- Mr. and Mrs. Joe D. Washington of Raonoke visited in this community yesterday. Mrs. Washington is going to spend a few days with her daughter Mrs. McManus. --- ROCK MILLS News Jan. 30th We were made sad on Saturday when our good friend, Mrs. J.E. Bennett passed away. She left a husband and four children, a mother, brothers and sisters and a host of friends who will always cherish her memory. She was buried at the Methodist church. Revs. V.C. Herndon and W.J. Layton conducted the funeral. --- Mr. C.W. Anderson and family spent Sunday with his sister, Mrs. J.S. Yates. --- MT. OLIVE News Jan. 30th Mrs. Sara Brown spent the weekend with her daughter Mrs. S.P. Burdette. --- RESOLUTIONS ON THE DEATH OF F.B. BREED Whereas, God in his unquestioned wisdom and love called from our midst on Nov. 17, 1921, our beloved friend and co-worker, F.B. Breed; and whereas he was a loyal and faithful member of our camp for several years. Therefore, be it resolved that we the members of the Abanda Woodmen of the World Camp bow in humble submission to God's will; that we cherish the memory of his noble work as a member of our camp and deeply deplore the loss of a faithful member; that we express our deepest sympathy to the bereaved family. Be it further resolved that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family of our deceased Sovereign; that a copy be spread on the minutes of this lodge; that a copy be sent to The Roanoke Leader and a copy be sent to the Sovereign Visitor for publication. Rotton, Committee ----- WEDOWEE News Jan. 30th A very sad happening occurred near Sewell in the eastern part of beat four near the Georgia line, last Sunday. John Parmer shot and killed Mr. Knight, he dying the next day. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 8, 1922 CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to the many neighbors and friends and especially to the physician sfor their kindness, sympathy and love, so graciously bestowed on us and our departed and beloved wife and mother. During her five weeks of illness you were so attentive, and when the end came, you were so tender, and spoke so many consoling words through sympathy. Bennett and children, Roanoke, Ala., Route 2. ---- DEATH OF T.T. GOODWIN OCCURRED LAST FRIDAY Last Friday morning Mr. Thomas T. Goodwin died at his home in LaGrange after an illness of two weeks, though his condition was not considered alarming until a day or so before his death. He was in the prime of life and leaves a wife and two little girls. The deceased was a son of Mrs. Sarah Goodwin and a brother to Messrs. Bart, Burrell and Handley Goodwin and Misses Mattie and Annie Goodwin. The funeral and interment was at Mt. Pisgah on Saturday at noon, the services being conducted by Rev. Virgil Herndon, pastor of the Methodist church at Rock Mills. The many friends of Mr. Goodwin in this vicinity, where the greater part of his life was spent, learn of his death with regret, and offer sympathy to the stricken family. ---- CARD OF THANKS We are very grateful to our good friends and neighbors for the attention shown our loved sister and aunt duirng her short stay in our midst, also for the many kind words and deeds extended to us in our sadness upon her leaving for the better world. C.E. Warlick and children ---- LOCAL News J.R. Tidwell was called to Columbus, Ga., several days ago to attend his mother who underwent a serious operation in an infirmary of that city. Mr. Tidwell has not returned but late news from him is to the effect that his mother is slightly better. --- MT. OLIVE News Feb. 6th Mrs. Julia Pinckard fell one day last week and broke her hip. She is not expected to recover, being 83 years of age. --- WEHADKEE News Feb. 6th Mr. Posey Wingo and Miss Gladys Wood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.Y. Wood, were married Saturday night at Waresville, Georgia. --- T.V. Jones received a telegram Sunday announcing the death of his grandmother, Mrs. Joe Burson in Texas. The deceased formerly lived near this place. --- LEVEL ROAD News Feb. 6th Mrs. John Arch Dollar continues very ill. --- WOODLAND News Feb. 6th Mrs. Neigh Smith died at her home near Pine Hill on Monday and was buried Tuesday at Providence. --- LOWELL news Mrs. Cleo Jenkins' death occurred Friday morning. The interment was at Milltown. --- Mr. Hill Taft moved to LaGrange on Friday. --- WEDOWEE News Feb. 6th "Uncle" John Kirby of Haywood community was in town Saturday. He reports his son Mr. Tom Kirby of Bowdon, Ga., is not expected to live long. --- I wish to say in regard to "Uncle" Jim Cofield who died last week, that I have known him for 40 years. He was a good citizen, loved his country, worked for the good of his community and was always on the moral side of all questions. He was always a friend of the writer; I shall always remember him. (writer's name not given) ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 15, 1922 HANDLEY S. WALLER AND MISS GEORGE MARRIED At 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon an unannouced marriage ceremony was performed by Rev. Claud Orear at the home of Mrs. V.C. George, when her niece Miss Ethel George, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. George, who resides near Pool's Cross Roads, became the bride of Mr. Handley S. Waller. Mr. and Mrs. Waller left on the 2:50 A.B & A. train for Birmingham to spend a few days. Mr. Waller is a well known and deserving young man and is connected with the city bakery. He will be congratulated upon the good fortune that has come into his life. ---- HOPEWELL News Feb. 13th Mr. Ransom Kitchens who has been sick for the past week, died at his home at Swagg on Sunday morning. Mr. Kitchens was one of the county's best citizens. To mourn his death he leaves a wife and twelve children besides a large number of friends. ---- WEDOWEE News Feb. 13th Mr. Marion Mitchell of Austin Chapel, west of town, happened to the bad luck of getting his leg broken the other day. --- "Uncle" Ransom Kitchens of Swagg community died of Bright's disease on Sunday. He was buried on Monday at New Home Church. He was a good citizen. His son Fred arrived from Florida a few days before his father's death. --- A wedding of much interest occurred in Wedowee on Sunday. Mr. Charley Kirby of Napoleon community and Miss Cordie Wilson, the youngest daughter of Mr. T.C. Wilson, were married in the courthouse Sunday morning. Mr. Kirby is the son of Mr. Bud Kirby and is in the senior class in the High School at Wedowee.. --- Mrs. Burns Parker is visiting her parents in West Point, her father Mr. R.W. Bass being sick. --- LOWELL News Mr. Bill Norred celebrated his 68th birthday in Lowell on Tuesday, the 7th. He hasn't been in good health for a long while but seemed to be cheerful and enjoyed the day fine. Including his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, there were 53 present. All his children were there except one. ---- Mr. and Mrs. F.C. DeLoach left Thursday for Thomaston, Ga., where they will make their future home. --- Mrs. Daisy Boyd and children from Thomaston, Ga., are spending a few weeks with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G.L. Hanson. --- Mrs. Sears of the Lowell community is sick at this writing. --- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. John Sledge have received news of the marriage of their son Ernest Sledge to Miss Beatrice Hale of Fairfax. The groom resides at Shawmut. The ceremony occurred at West Point. --- Mrs. James has received news of the serious illness of her mother Mrs. W.R. Petree at Russellville who is suffering with pneumonia. --- Mrs. Troy Foster, daughter of the late John W. McCoy, died Thursday near Milltown. --- WOODLAND News Feb. 13th "Aunt" Lucy Hester died last Tuesday night at the home of her brother "Uncle" Joe Hester and was buried at Zion church on Thursday. She was 86 years old. She had been a member of the Baptist church about 66 years and was a devout christian. --- Mr. Warner Williams has typhoid fever. --- MT. OLIVE news Feb. 13th Mr. DeWitt Carden is visiting his mother Mrs. Ella Carden. He has a position in Wheatley, Arkansas. --- NEW HOPE News Feb. 13th Mrs. Billie Parker fell off the veranda a day or two ago and was badly hurt. --- Mr. David Moore of the Ava community was seriously hurt last week by a limb from a tree falling on him. It cut an ugly gash in his head besides making some bad bruises about his shoulders. --- WADLEY News Feb. 13th Miss Lillian Weldon went to Savannah, Ga., a few days ago and was married to Mr. Wm. Lawrence Elmore. They have the best wishes of many friends. --- LOCAL News Mr. Robert B. Graham, county surveyor for Randolph county, died suddenly last Wednesday while doing a job of surveying over in Heard County, Georgia. --- R.J. Hooton was called to Florence on Thursday of last week to attend the funeral of his brother Thos. L. Harlan who died after an illness of three days of pneumonia. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, February 22, 1922 WEDOWEE News Feb. 20th We regret to learn of the sad accident that happened the other day in Beat 14 to Arthur Traylor, son of Mr. John Traylor. He had been to Carrollton to sell a load of poultry. As he came back he had some kind of trouble with his truck and stooping to adjust it his gun fell out of his pocket and shot him in the side. He died Saturday morning. ---- LOCAL News Grover Garrett and sister Mrs. W.B. McClain are visiting their parents near Texas, Georgia. --- Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Kitchens Jr. went over to Heard County on Sunday and brought with them their parents Mr. and Mrs. E.O. Kitchens Sr. who will spend the this week in Roanoke. The latter who was in deplorable health for quite a while is now recovered. --- The Leader learns of the marriage on Sunday afternoon last of Mr. W.P. Redmond, well known citizen of Five Points to Miss Janie Milford of Lanett. --- The Leader is informed that Mrs. Jack Martin has smallpox. It is stated that there are other cases in town. --- MT. OLIVE News Feb. 20th We are glad to report that "Aunt" Sallie Burdette who has been confined to her bed with pneumonia is able to be up. --- "Aunt" Julia Pinckard continues very ill. --- Mrs. S.G. Owen was very ill last week but is better at this writing. --- Mrs. H.R. Nix and her sister Mrs. Floyd visited their parents at Omaha Saturday and Sunday. --- MALONE News Feb. 21st Mrs. Rose Estes of Cragford spent the weekend with her sister Mrs. J.K. Wilkerson. --- Mrs. T.W. Hampton has as her guest her brother Mr. Herbert Cook of Lineville. --- Mrs. Ledford Malone arrived Monday to spend some time with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gib Gay. --- LOCAL News J.D. Ozley went down to Orlando, Florida last Friday to remain some time. His son-in-law J.E. McClain has purchased a place with an orange grove and sent for Mr. Ozley to come down and help him handle it. --- LOWELL news Charlie Walker, of near Milltown and Miss Sears, daughter of Mr. G.A.
