Mrs. McKinney was 78 years of age the 15th of May and had been an invalid for many months. During all the time of her mother's illness, Mrs. Dowdle and other members of the family were devotedly attentive to the afflicted one, while neighbors rendered what aid and comfort they could. When the end came to the beloved lady every evidence of esteem and sympathy were extended on the part of the friends of the family. At that time quite a crowd of people were at this resort and a number of youths were in bathing. Among these was Alfred Martin, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Martin, and Bruce Embrey, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Claud Embrey. Both are in their seventeenth year. It seems that young Embrey could not swim and that he got into water beyond his depth. Alfred Martin made an effort to get his companion out, but the latter being heavier, gradually was exhausting the strength of Martin, and when sinking the last time he drew him down by a hold on his foot. At this critical moment, Mr. Joe Precourt of Maine, who is visiting is friend Page Enloe, having thrown off his top clothes, plunged into the water. He was joined by Mr. John H. McDow about the same time who ran up to the scene and did not take time to cast off any of his clothing. Martin was soon safe but Embrey was only rescued by diving. In the meantime some one had brought up a bateau and the unconscious lad was rowed to shore. A telephonic message had been sent over in town for a physician and one arrived in a very short time and proceeded to resucitate the victim. He was soon brought to consciousness and carried home, where he has been confined to his bed part of the time since. The presence of mind and heroism of Mr. Precourt and Mr. McDow and of Alfred Martin as well is especially to be praised. Mr. and Mrs. Embrey express themselves as being very grateful to these gentlemen as well as to the many others who rendered aid at this critical time. ----- AVA News July 19th Miss Martha Harvel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dock Harvel of the Union community, died last Monday. The interment was at Shady Grove, the old home of the deceased. Full military honors were bestowed upon the fallen hero, whose body is among the last to arrive from France. A large assemblage was present to pay honor to his memory. Mr. Parker states that the deceased was his bunkmate and that he was of a very fine character. Sergeant Parker was standing close beside Mr. Wallace when a shell struck the latter on the head, producing instant death. Surely we should never have to undergo the hardships of another War so long as reason and civilization sit enthroned. ----- MR. SAM A. ABERNATHY AND MISS WOLFE ARE MARRIED Mr. Sam A. These old friends have been pleased to see Mr. Milner again in Roanoke with his family as they are now visiting relatives around the hold homestead at Hickory Flat. These old friends are specially pleased to learn of the good fortune that has come to Mr. Milner. His experience makes an interesting story. About eight onths ago oil was discovered on his comparatively small farm in northern Louisiana. It is said that the discovery was made through a visitor to the Milner home, who was attracted by the kind of rock used as a pillar under the house, the rock being secured on the farm. To make a long story short, there are now quite a number of oil wells on the Milner farm., which are bringing in what he modestly calls "a very nice income." It further appears that one of the oil wells was sunk so close to the residence as to make it necessary for the family to move out. But this was not such a hardship under the circumstances. We know one or two men who would have been willing to move under the same conditions. And by the way, Mr. Milner is prospecting for a home elsewhere. The Leader and all his friends in this vicinity hope that he may decide to locate in the best town in the best state in the whole country, and make a permanent citizen of Roanoke. ----- MARRIAGE ANNIVERSARY OF MR. Included in the many good things to eat was a bounteous fish fry. The occasion was most enjoyable upon the whole.
