Teal Gravelle tealtree@comcast.net April 22, 2006, 12:22 am The Roanoke Leader July 1923 NEWSPAPER ABSTRACTS FROM "THE ROANOKE LEADER", Roanoke, Randolph County, Alabama for JULY 1923 NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 4, 1923 LOWELL News Mrs. Eula Mae Anderson and her aunt, Miss Essie White of LaGrange are visiting relatives here this week. --- Mr. Grandell Knight and Miss Dessie Lovvorn motored to Evansville on Saturday afternoon and were married. --- E.W. GREEN WAS BADLY WOUNDED MONDAY NIGHT A very unfortunate tragedy occurred at nine o'clock Monday night in front of the old auditorium in Lowell, in which E.W. Green, about 19 years of age, was seriously injured by three knife wounds. The knife was wielded, it is said, by Jeff Breed, 22 years of age. The Leader has been unable to learn of any cause of the tragedy except it is alleged that Breed was drinking. He left immediately after the cutting, so his version of the affair cannot be obtained. He is still at large at this writing. Mr. Green was brought to the Roanoke infirmary where his wounds were dressed. A deep gash across his left ear and that side of his face was made, also an ugly wound across the right eye which may have affected the sight, and a long gash across the abdomen. After receiving surgical attention it is thought that the young man will recover. ---- LOCAL News Edith, the eldest child of Mrs. Smallwood, widow of the late Will Smallwood who was killed by Joe Shelnutt some time ago, died in Lowell on Monday night. Interment will be at Mt. Zion at ten o'clock Wednesday morning. ---- Mr. and Mrs. C.M. Harley and two sons left Monday on a visit to relatives in Spartanburg and Charleston, in South Carolina and will be absent several weeks. ---- Mrs. Lavice Atkins of Wadley visited her cousin Mrs. A.W. McCarley last week. While here, Mrs. Atkins called at the Leader office and ordered the paper sent to her son C.W. Atkins in Cisco, Texas and to her daughter Mrs. B.W. Gay in Stamford, Texas. ---- MT. CARMEL News July 2nd Luther and Dallas Waldrep spent Sunday in LaGrange and were accompanied home by their grandfather Mr. A.J. Broach. --- ROCK MILLS News Miss Mamie Harper of LaGrange is visiting her sister Mrs. Earl Boggs. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 11, 1923 F.R. MASHBURN DIED SUDDENLY JULY 4th The people of Wedowee and other points throughout the county were greatly shocked upon learning last Wednesday, July 4th, that Dr. Fred R. Washburn had died rather suddenly at his home in Wedowee, where he had been a practicing physician for a number of years. Dr. Washburn was slightly ill the day before his death but seemed to be better and to be sleeping during the middle of the night on the 3rd, but his wife's attention was attracted to him about three in the morning on the 4th when he was found to be dying. The end came before aid could reach him. Dr. Mashburn was reared in this county, was located a short while in Roanoke, and had many friends, especially among those to whom he ministered so faithfully. He was of a genial nature and had made a creditable showing against odds in the battle of life. He died when the sun was at its meridian, being forty years of age. His immediate family consists of a wife and three children. Mrs. W.T. Orr of this city is a sister of the deceased. Mrs. Mashburn is the daughter of Mrs. Ida Ford, also of Roanoke. Dr. Mashburn was a member of the Methodist church. The funeral was conducted Thursday morning at Midway church in the presence of a congregation that overflowed the house. The services were in charge of Rev. Mr. Eifert, assisted by Revs. J.P. West and J.M. Cook. Interment was made in the Midway cemetery. ----- ROCK MILLS News July 9th Miss Adelle Adamson and Mr. Elvis Howell were married last Sunday in LaGrange. --- PINE HILL News July 9th Mr. Webster Landers and family of Tampa, Florida are visiting relatives here and at Bowdon, Georgia, and Oxford Ala., and other points. They are accompanied by Mr. Frank Landers of Auburn. --- Mrs. Dura Robertson of Roopville, Georgia spent a few days last week with her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Ragsdale. --- Mrs. Alice Martin of Tallapoosa, Georgia is spending a few days with her parents Mr. and Mrs. John Ragsdale. --- Mr. Elbert Carroll is expected from Cullman County in a few days to visit relatives around this place. --- "Uncle" Henry Mitchum and wife are leaving Monday for Birmingham where they will make their future home. We regret very much to give them up. --- CARD OF THANKS Words are inadequate to express our appreciation for the many kind deeds and expressions of our many neighbors and friends and the faithful services of the doctors in the last sickness and death of our wife and mother. Cardwell and brother Larry stopped by to see their aunt, Mrs. Sallie Wood, last week on their way to Livingston, their former home, from Washington, D.C. Larry has been in school two years in East Falls, Virginia. --- UNION HILL News July 9th Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nixon from LaGrange and also Mrs. Bud Nixon and children from Roanoke, visited Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Workman on the 4th. --- Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mitchell of near Milltown spent Saturday and Sunday with the latter's brothers, G.D. and J.L. Rice. --- CARD OF THANKS We take this manner of expressing our thanks to our friends for the many expressions of love and sympathy extended to us during our recent heartbreaking and sudden bereavement in the death of our husband and son, Dr. Fred Ross Mashburn. Gauntt wrote from Omaha, Texas to renew his subcription to the Leader. --- Mrs. Amos Holliday returned Monday night from LaFayette where she was called on the account of the illness of her mother Mrs. W.A. Garrett, who is some improved at this writing. --- Mr. J.F. Pogue was in town last Thursday, going over to Chandler Springs to visit his daughter Mrs. J.A. Lewis. --- WEHADKEE News July 9th Last Saturday night at 12 o'clock, Mrs. W.C. Enloe passed away at her home near this place after a long period of failing health. The deceased was nearly 81 years of age. She had been a member of the Primitive Baptist church for 61 years and lived a devoted christian. She is survived by her husband and two sons, W.H. and Robert Enloe. Funeral services were heled at Hillabahatchee on Sunday afternoon. Revs. J.D. O'Keefe, W.T. Overton and Mr. Bartley took part in the services. ---- Mrs. W.H. Enloe of Langdale has been spending several weeks at the bedside of her mother-in-law Mrs. W.C. Enloe during her last illness. She will be rewarded by our Heavenly Father for her faithful service. ---- BACON LEVEL News July 9th Willie Hudson, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Hudson left last Thursday for Muskegon, Michigan. --- The Atlanta Journal of Monday announced the death in that city of Mrs. Charles R. Pittman. The Pittman family resided in Roanoke several years ago and many friends here will learn of the death of this good lady with sincere regret. --- Mrs. Frank M. Hornsby will return tomorrow from Atlanta where she was called Saturday by the illness of her father Mr. Thos. H. Hearn, who is now convalescent. Mr. Hearn was recently struck on the head and robbed and it is thought that that blow brought on his illness. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 18, 1923 DEATH OF MR. B.C. JONES OCCURRED ON THURSDAY (large photo/sketch of B.C. Jones on front page) (Note: the page is poorly scanned on the microfilm and very difficult to read with a part of the left side of the article and page not filmed) Last Thursday evening the eventful life of Mr. Burrell Cook Jones Sr. came to an end peacefully. He had been seriously ill for a week or more but was able to be up in the room for a few minutes before he died. His death at the time came unexpectedly. At four o'clock Friday afternoon the funeral services for this well known citizen were held at the Baptist church. The deceased is survived by his ???, three sons, Messrs. Leon, B.C. Jones Jr. and Gus Jones and a daughter Mrs. A.C. ?? . Mr. Jones lacked two ?? of being 62 years of age. His father, Prof. Leonidas Jones, was a noted educator in east Alabama and West Georgia for many years. Mrs. T.C. Goodwin is the only surviving member of the family of the late Prof. L. Jones. B.C. Jones moved to Roanoke from Georgia 33 years ago. He took a prominent place in business and civic activities in his adopted home. He was a long time member of the Baptist church. This genial, clever gentleman will be sadly missed from the circles he frequented these many years. ----- DR. E.P. GREEN TO LOCATE TO LATHROP, PICKENS COUNTY Dr. E.P. Green, one of the best known and esteemed physicians in this part of the state and who has been located at Hickory Flat for about twenty years, is preparing to move to Lathrop, near Reform in Pickens County. Hundreds of friends will join the Leader in regretting to see this good family leave us, but will be pleased to know that Dr. Green has secured a most desirable position. He will do contract practice for a large lumber company and will have a number of advantages including fine school facilities. ---- SUDDEN DEATH OF DEWEY HOLLIDAY ON SUNDAY The community of Standing Rock was shocked Sunday by the unexpected death of Mr. Dewey Holliday, aged 25 years, son of Mr. Neal Holliday. The young man had been ill but was up until a half hour before his death. Funeral and interment was at Standing Rock at four o'clock Monday afternoon. Revs. V.C. Herndon and T.B. Jordan conducted the services. ---- LOCAL News The Leader learned with regret on Friday of the accident that occurred that day to T.V. Jones who suffered one eye knocked out while at work in a blacksmith shop at Omaha. His father-in-law J.L.B. Green accompanied the unfortunate young man to Opelika to receive treatment at the hands of a specialist. ---- Robert Young is ill with diptheria at the home of his grandmother Mrs. N.J. Fincher. --- Mrs. Kate Guin Birdsong of LaGrange, Georgia is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Stevens in Roanoke. She was a school girl in Roanoke long ago and married here in 1879. ---- George Lee Hill who was called here Friday by the death of his uncle, B.C. Jones, returned Sunday to Athens, Georgia where he is taking a special course. --- LEVEL ROAD July 16th Mrs. Lila Treadwell and children from Red River, Texas are visiting Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Embrey and family. --- ROCK MILLS News July 16th Friday evening, July 13th, God saw fit to take from our midst one of our loving and true hearted boys, Olin Pitts. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Pitts. Olin was only seventeen years of age. He was sick only sick days. The funeral was held Sunday morning at the Baptist church where Olin had been a member for some time. After services conducted by Rev. W.T. Overton his body was laid to rest in the new cemetery of this place. The deceased leaves a father, mother and seven brothers and sister to mourn his death. May God's richest blessings be bestowed on each of them. Mr. Eric Pitts of Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. J. Bernard Pitts of Birmingham and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Pitts of Shawmut, came to attend the funeral of their brother. ---- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, July 25, 1923 DEATH ON LAST FRIDAY OF AN AGED RESIDENT Mr. A.J. Garner died peacefully at his home in this place last Friday afternoon, after a long period of ill health. He was over 70 years of age and leaves a wife and six grown children, all of whom were present at the funeral, which was held Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the Methodist church. Rev. F.A. Vann was in charge. Interment was in the Roanoke cemetery. Mr. Garner was a member of the M.E. Church at Midway where he served in an official capacity in the years of his active life. He left a record of devoted service to his family and his church. ----- WOODLAND News July 23rd Mrs. William Daniel has as her guest her brother Mr. William Thompson of Cullman. --- Mr. Joe Thompson and son Hoyt from Sand Mountain are visiting relatives here. --- NEWELL News July 23rd We had a very sad accident in our community the 13th inst. at the home of Mr. J.T. McCord. His little three year old Dorris stumbled and fell backward into a bucket of boiling water that was sitting on the floor while her mother was taking down some curtain rods preparing to wash. The accident happened about ten o'clock and the little one died at eight o'clock that evening. ---- Mrs. C.W. Pope and children of Macon, Georgia arrived last week to spend some time with her father and mother Rev. H. Willoughby and wife. --- WADLEY News July 23rd Mrs. Ruby Cardwell Young of Kileen, Texas is visiting relatives in Wadley. --- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. D.W. Sudduth of Atlanta are spending a few days with the family of J.C. Sudduth. --- Mr. J.T. King, a former citizen of this county, now residing at Tifton, Georgia was the guest of his brother-in-law E. Zobel the first of the week. --- Miss Mae Lillie Jeffers left Tuesday to attend the funeral of her aunt, Mrs. R.H. Davis of Sandersville, Georgia. Mrs. Jeffers had been there several days during her illness. Mrs. Davis formerly resided in Roanoke where she had many friends. --- Mr. and Mrs. Sam Tatus were in LaFayette on Sunday to attend the funeral of Mrs. John Tatum which was conducted in the afternoon. Besides her husband the deceased is survived by two young sons. --- Mrs. Phil Tennenbaum and little daughter of Atlanta are visiting the former's sister Mrs. E. Wender. --- Belmont Pearson of Memphis, Tenn., called at the Leader office this week to renew his subscription to his home county paper while visiting kinfolks in Randolph county. --- Morris Nelson is singing the past few evenings over the radio from Dallas, Texas. His mother Mrs. Mary Nelson was delighted to hear him recently on the radio. ---- A visitor to Roanoke last Thursday was Jos. A. Gibson of Port Arthur, Texas who went to school here during his boyhood days. He was having a good time looking up former school mates, all of whom were pleased to greet him. --- CARD OF THANKS We wish to take this method of thanking our friends and neighbors for the beautiful ministrations of love and kindness shown us at the death of our beloved son and brother.
