He moved from this community about thirty years ago and his many old friends are proud to see him back again. ---- LOWELL News Miss Mamie Ashley of this place is visiting relatives in Sylacauga. --- A GOLDEN WEDDING An interesting event was the Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Orr of Roanoke, which was celebrated at the home of their son W. Oscar Orr, in Langdale on July 22nd. The spacious home was decorated with gold and white Canna lilies and stately ferns. The dining table center was decorated with the wedding cake which was banded with gold and bore the dates 1873 and 1923. This corresponded with the china ware which was of golden King Tut design. The tea table was decorated with green and gold colors and was presided over by Miss Mary Orr who wore a beautiful lavender canton crepe dress. At 3:30 o'clock the beautiful wedding cake was cut and served with gold colored ice creme. Among the gifts that were received by the happy couple was fifty dollars in gold which was presented by the four children who were present. Those present were: W. Oscar Orr and family, Mrs. Ella Embrey and daughters of Fairfax, Mr. W.T. Orr and children of Roanoke, Mr. Frank Orr of LaGrange, Mrs. Jno. Orr and Miss Arrie Gray of Shawmut, Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Smith of Fairfax. S.L. Orr of Homer, La., and Chas. Orr of Columbus, Ga., were absent. ----- ROCK MILLS News July 30th Mrs. H.L. Holman was called from our midst to the Great Beyond, on Friday. She leaves a husband and seven children to mourn her death. May God bless each of them. --- Mr. William Borders of Muskegon, Michigan is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M.L. Borders. --- MT. ZION News July 30th Mrs. Coplin is visiting her son Mr. Charlie Seymour at this place. --- LOCAL News Mrs. Julian Keith Legare has gone to her ancestral home "Rosemont" in Greene county for the rest of the summer. --- W. H. Duke and family returned to Birmingham after a visit of several days to kindred in this city and section. --- Mrs. Vashti Worrell Irvin of Birmingham is visiting her old friend Mrs. Carrie Pittman and her relatives, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Stevens. Mrs. Irvin will be remembered by the older people as the widow of the late John Irvin, once tax assessor in Randolph County. --- The Leader regrets to report that Mrs. Jas. L.B. Taylor was stricken with paralysis in the right side last Wednesday at her home two miles north of town. Her son Mr. Perry Taylor and wife of Selma and another son Mr. Leon Taylor and family of Nashville are here to attend her. Many friends of this good lady and the family hope for her steady improvement. ---- WEHADKEE News July 30th "Uncle" Charlie Powers of Cullman county is visiting his daughter Mrs. F.B. Barrett at Springfield. --- Miss Sallie Pittman was carried last week to Brice hospital in Tuscaloosa. --- Mrs. J.P. Lewis and three children arrived last Monday from Atlanta to visit the former's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Green and other relatives in this section. --- Mr. Gordon Bennett underwent an operation in LaFayette a few days ago. He has been brought home and is seriously ill. --- ROCK SPRINGS News July 30th Mr. Vester Dobson of Jay, Florida is visiting relatives here. --- LOCAL News Mrs. G.H. Wade of Chattanooga, Tenn. is spending several days with her brother T.E. Landers, leaving Thursday to visit her sister at Carrollton, Ga. --- Mrs. O.E. Kitchens has had as her guests the past several days, her mother Mrs. M.O. Lester of Glenn, Ga. --- Mrs. E.E. Hearn of Chesterfield, S.C., Mr. and Mrs. G.O. Brantley of Chattanooga, Tenn, Mrs. Clarence Nichols of Hogansville, Ga., and Miss Margaret Hearn of Carrollton, Ga., are visiting the family of H.G. Ruggles this week. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 8, 1923 WOODLAND News Aug. 6th On the morning of Aug. 2nd., after along illness, Mr. J.H.E. Rampy passed to his reward. He was 60 years old and united with the Methodist church in early lived and lived a consistent christian till death. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.H. Hester at Liberty Grove. He leaves a wife and eight children to mourn his departure. May their lives be enriches by his noble influences. ---- Mr. T.A. Hester and family and Mr. H.L. McCarley and family returned last Friday from a visit to relatives in DeKalb and Winston counties. --- CORINTH News Aug. 6th Mr. O. Wright spent his fifty-seventh birthday on the river last Friday at a big fish fry. --- Mrs. Arnton Ponder and children of Tifton, Ga., are spending awhile with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Windsor. --- Mrs. Dewey Gray of LaGrange spent a few days last week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. Green. --- WADLEY News Aug. 7th Mr. W.M. Hook, president of Bethlehem College was married to Miss Minnie Edge on Aug. 1st. --- LOCAL News Mrs. A.C. George is spending this week with her daughter Mrs. Handley Waller in Adelle, Ga. --- C. Needham Avery is expected to arrive from Austin, Texas on Friday for a visit to his old home. --- SPRINGFIELD News Aug. 6th Mrs. J.R. Stitt returned home a few days ago from a visit to her children in South Alabama and Georgia and was accompanied home by her daughter Mrs. T.L. Lewis of Columbus. --- Miss Carra Criswell returned home Saturday from a two week visit to her aunt, Mrs. Dean of Standing Rock. --- HOBSON News Mr. Homer Shell and family returned to Columbus this morning after spending some time with Mr. Shell's sister, Mrs. Johnson. --- Mrs. Pearl Smith and daughter of Columbus are visiting Mr. Olin Johnson. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 15, 1923 LOWELL News Mr. Charlie Philpot and Mrs. Mary Allen of this place were happily married Saturday at the home of Rev. H. Moore on Stone Avenue. --- DEATH OF TWO BELOVED LADIES IN CHAMBERS COUNTY Two well known and much loved ladies in the northern part of Chambers county died last week. Both had been in wretched health for a long while. On Thursday, the spirit of Mrs. Walter Finney was borne away. The body was interred at Five Points on Friday. On that day, Mrs. Clint Wheeler died. Funeral and interment was at Bethel on Saturday morning, conducted by Rev. E.B. Redus. Much sympathy is felt for the families thus sorely bereaved. ----- LOCAL News S.S. Smith had as his guests on Saturday and Sunday his brothers, M.M. Smith of Macon county and R.B. Smith of LaFayette and a brother-in-law, C.M. Broadwater with his two sons of Russell county. ---- W.E. Chase has been confined to his home several days with the fever. --- G.D. Hampton and family, formerly of this place but now of Sheffield, were in Roanoke last Thursday and Friday, traveling in a new Buick car. --- The family and friends of Mrs. Dorothy Higgins enjoyed with her the celebration of the 79th birthday of that beloved lady at her home in Roanoke last Thursday. Cordial wishes for the return of many birthday anniversaries to this good mother were spoken. --- J.W. Turner and sons Charles and Ben and Howard P. Hackney arrived Saturday from Pickton, Texas to spend several days visiting in this vicinity. They made the trip nearly a thousand miles in a Ford with satisfactory results. --- UNION HILL News Aug. 1st Mr. and Mrs. J.A. Arrington of Roanoke are spending this week with their daughter Mrs. J.L. Rice. --- ALMOND News Aug. 13th On Saturday was held the Clegg family reunion at the old home of Dr. James Clegg. It was a great day for all. There were 238 people present, 137 absent and 28 dead. --- A HAPPY BIRTHDAY DINNER One of the most interesting and enjoyable events held recently was a birthday dinner given Sunday by Mr. W.L. Stewart near Broughton. It was not only his birthday, but also that of Mrs. J.D. Jeter and Mrs. Thomas Seymour. The guests began to arrive early and by noon many were in attendance. At dinner several tables were put under the beautiful shade trees and each was perfectly filled. There was everything good to eat any one could wish for. Delicious fruits and watermelons were in abundance the day thru. Mr. Stewart, Mrs. Jeter and Mrs. Seymour received several beautiful presents. In the afternoon the guest left expressing themselves as having a very pleasant day. A Guest. ---- THE PEARSON REUNION WAS AT MALONE ON WEDNESDAY The annual reunion of the descendants of James Pearson was held Wednesday the 8th at the old home place of Mr. Pearson at Malone, beginning at ten o'clock. Games for the children were enjoyed and at noon there was a fine picnic dinner served by the good women. The crowd did justice to it. About 100 members of this family were present. Mr. and Mrs. Will Weathers and children and Mr. King Owens were invited guests. I wish heartily to express my appreciation for the invitation and a most delightful day spent with these good people. Mrs. E.M. Moore, Wedowee, Ala. ---- BACON LEVEL News We are glad to learn that Mrs. Lenore Strickland Ingram of Goodwater, who fell some time ago and broke her leg, is doing fine at this writing. The many friends of Mrs. Ingram will be glad to learn of her improvement. --- CORINTH News Aug. 13th Mrs. Minnie Eiland and daughter Cora Lee spent the weekend with her mother Mrs. John Bailey. --- ROCK MILLS News Aug. 13th Mr. Olin Ozley is sick with malaria. --- Nolan Foster is very low at this writing with malarial fever. --- MT. CARMEL News Aug. 13th Sorry to report that Mrs. Ada Bonner is seriously ill with the fever. --- Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Waldrep and Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Waldrep were called last week to the bedside of their brother Mr. J.P. Waldrep who was seriously ill, but improving at this writing. --- FORESTER'S CHAPEL News Mr. James Horton of Cullman and son Vester Horton of Chattanooga were here recently. They moved from this community twenty years ago. --- WEHADKEE News A.J. Pittman Jr. and family came over from Woodbury, Ga., to visit the former's parents. Accompanied by the former's mother they went to Shawmut to visit kindred. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, August 22, 1923 LIGHTNING IS FATAL ON SUNDAY TO MRS. FARR A shocking tragedy occurred about 11 o'clock last Sunday morning when Mrs. J. Wyley Farr was instantly killed by lightning in a bedroom of her home in East Roanoke. In the room also at the time were her husband and two children. None of the others were injured. Mrs. Farr was standing under an electric light drop which had no bulb in it, thus adding to the danger. At the same time, Mr. and Mrs. Eudorus Sharman were severely shocked by the electrical play. Mrs. Sharman was knocked to the floor and rendered unconscious at the time. One of Mr. Sharman's legs were burned. Neighbors were summoned to the home where death had so suddenly come and did all in their power to comfort the distressed family. The remains of the deceased were carried Monday to the former home in Heard County, Georgia and interred at Prospect church, after services conducted at 2 p.m. by Rev. O.A. Moore in the presence of a large congregation. Mrs. Farr was a niece of Mr. J.T. Talley. She was a member of the New Hope Baptist church in Heard County and is highly spoken of by those who knew her. She is survived by the husband and five children, four boys and one girl, ranging in age from 3 years to 15 years. Mrs. Cook, the mother of the unfortunate victim, is staying in the afflicted home for the present. ---- EXPRESSION OF THANKS The Leader is authorized by Mr. J.W. Farr to convey an expression of his unbounded gratitude to the many neighbors and friends who so kindly came to the aid of himself and family in the tragic taking away from the home of wife and mother. These ministrations were most helpful and consoling. Grateful remembrance is herewith recorded. ---- LOCAL News Mr. W.D. Smith of Malone community died last night at the Knight Sanitorium where he was brought some weeks ago with partial paralysis. The remains will be interred today near the old home. --- BOWDON YOUTH DROWNED AT MALONE LAST FRIDAY Harvey Cook of Bowdon, Georgia, 16 year old son of Rev. A. Cook was visiting relatives here last week and went to the river on Friday afternoon to go bathing and was drowned about 3 o'clock. His body was found at nine o'clock Friday night. Funeral services were held at Bowdon on Saturday p.m. ---- MALONE News Aug. 21st Mrs. Roxie McDowell and children of Eastman, Georgia have been spending time with her mother Mrs. J.B. Malone. --- Miss Eunice Malone left Saturday for Talladega to meet Mr. Wade Hyatt. They were married that night and left the next morning for Birmingham. They will return here next Thursday. --- CLACK FAMILY REUNION HELD LAST SUNDAY An interesting family reunion with a big dinner served at noon was the order of the day last Sunday at the home of Mr. Chas. D. Clack on Route 1. There were fifty people present, all of them members of the Clack family except three. A number came some distance to be present on this happy occasion. A rare coincidence is the fact that the birthdays of five members of Mr. C.D. Clack's immediate family occur during the month of August as follows: C.D. Clack on the 13th and Mrs. Clack on the 28th; among the children, Adolphus on the 3rd, Thelma on the 19th and Annie May on the 20th. ----- ROCK STAND News Aug. 20th Mrs. W.C. Kirby of our community was carried to Roanoke yesterday afternoon for an operation and treatment. Her friends and family pray that the operation may be successful. --- BACON LEVEL News Aug. 20th Mr. Jack Aldridge died Thursday afternoon at four o'clock. Interment was at Fellowship on Saturday at two o'clock. Services were conducted by Rev. G.H. Shadix. --- CORINTH News Aug. 20th Mrs. J.C. Harris will celebrate her 70th birthday today with a big dinner. She is expecting all of her children, sisters and some of her friends to be with her. ---- LOCAL News Mrs. Brown Smith has as her guests this week her sisters, Mrs. T.A. Slaughter of Atlanta and Miss Lavelle Tatum of Abanda. --- Dr. and Mrs. W.A. Clardy and son Fred attended last Friday the funeral of the former's grandmother Mrs. Amanda Killgore at Mt. Gilead, beyond Wadley. The deceased was 84 years of age. --- Mr. T.S. Tatum of LaFayette is spending a few days with his son S.H. Tatum. --- WEHADKEE News Aug. 20th L.H. Benefield has been confined to his bed several days with typhoid fever. --- ROCK MILLS News Aug. 20th The death angel visited our town last Thursday and claimed Mr. Jack Aldridge to go to the Great Beyond. He leaves a wife, children, brothers and sisters and many friends to mourn his death. May God lend a helping hand to the entire family. ---- Mrs. Herb Knight of Roanoke is the guest of her mother Mrs. C.V. Adkinson. --- FORESTER'S CHAPEL News Aug. 20th Mr. and Mrs. M.W. Ledford of S.C. have been visiting the former's mother Mrs. Ledford and sisters, Mrs. T.B. Lemons and Mrs. Kate Farrar at this place. --- MANY ATTEND AVERY REUNION LAST SUNDAY The home of Mr. Walter Avery near Five Points was the occasion of the birthday of Mr. Avery and his daughter Cordie and also was used as a day of reunion for the Avery family. Five generations were present, and while the thunders roared and the rain poured, dinner was announced and 67 answered ready. It was a great day for all. Those present from other points were: C. DUNN ON MURDER CHARGE IS TODAY Much interest is felt in the trial in circuit court in Wedowee today of Mr. Wyatt T. Dunn, well known citizen residing four miles west of Roanoke, who was indicted last week on a charge of first degree murder. Mr. Dunn is charged with the slaying of Hubert Summers near the former's home last May, since which time he has been out on bond. Many from this section have gone to Wedowee to witness the trial. ---- WEDOWEE News Aug. 28th The criminal week of Circuit court began this morning with Judge Brewer presiding. Several cases were heard Monday and Tuesday. Jeff Breed, white, was convicted of assault and attempt to murder. Mac Higgins, negro, was given two years for the murder of Henry Terrell, colored. ---- REUNION OF FAMILY OF MR. J.W. WOOD ON SUNDAY The fourth Sunday in August each year is held the Wood family reunion at the old home place of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Wood near Paran. Each year there is a marked increase in interest and attendance. Last Sunday there came together about one hundred relatives, besides friends, to enjoy this annual occasion. The influx of visitors continued until the noon hour. At that time under a large spreading oak in the north yard, was spread a bounteous feast. An interesting feature of the occasion was the devotional exercises presided over by Dr. J.M. Welch. Many interesting talks were made by relatives and friends. Special mention must be made of a very feeling talk on home life by Mrs. Harvey Enloe of Langdale, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Wood. Others who took part with heartfelt talks were Hiram Pearson, W.Y. Wood, J.W. Fuller, Fuller Alsobrook, Prof. Owens and John Alsobrook. Too soon, the joyous occasion came to a close. The hand shakes and goodbyes reminded us that we were ushered one day nearer the great reunion on the other side. One Present. ------ MRS. MARTHA HOOD CELEBRATES 78th BIRTHDAY Some author has said "A mother's heart is always with her children." So it was with Mrs. Martha Hood on Sunday, August 26th, at her home in Double Head, three miles south of Roanoke, when she had her five children and nine grandchildren and many other relatives and friends present on her 78th birthday. It was been customary for the Hood family to come together on this occasion at her home for many years. The morning was a happy one for this aged mother in greeting all of her children, relatives and friends and indulging in memories of the past. A delicious dinner was served under the shade of the oaks at 12 o'clock. Uncle Bowdon Brown, a faithful attendant, spoke appropriate words during the dinner. The children of Mrs. Hood are Mrs. D.L. Tomlin, Mrs. H.M. Kitchens and Mrs. V.E. Kitchens and Messrs. Warren and Ernest Hood. There were people present from Atlanta, Columbus, Louisiana and many nearby places. All wished Mrs. Hood many happy returns of her natal day. ---- NEW HOPE News George Manley and family, Uncle Will Manley and family and others from this section went to the Halsey family reunion at W.A. Halsey's on Saturday. This reunion was given in honor of Mr. Jim Halsey and wife who are visiting in Chambers and Randolph counties from Texas. This is their first visit to Alabama since they moved to the Lone Star state 38 years ago. ----- BACON LEVEL News Aug. 27th Mr. and Mrs. J.J. Echols were called to LaGrange on Saturday on account of Mrs. Echols' sister, Mrs. Belle Howard being stricken with paralysis. --- LOCAL News Barney Terrell of West Point, Ga., is here with his brother W.O. Terrell in the Chero Cola Plant. --- Vardaman Buckalew will return Friday to Mobile where he is at work in a bank. --- MT. ZION News Mrs. E.C. Carden spent the weekend with her sister Mrs. Addie Melton at Abanda. --- PARAN News Aug. 27th "Uncle" Richard Green, who has been for many years one of the best nurses and friends to the sick in the community, is now an invalid. His friends will remember his kind deeds and not neglect visiting him. --- A lot of friends and relatives spent a pleasant day last Thursday in the home of Mr. I.W. Lewis and Mrs. O.F. Smith celebrating her 76th birthday. --- Mrs. Grover C.
