FINCHER IN LOWELL MONDAY NIGHT Mr. L.G.T. Fincher died Monday night at his home in the Lowell section of this city following a desperate operation some days ago in a last chance to prolong his life. The deceased leaves a wife and two children, besides many relatives and friends. The interment of the remains of this well liked young man occurred Tuesday afternoon at Rock Springs, with services conducted by Rev. J.D. Dollar assisted by Revs. W. T.Meacham and F.M. Vann. --- WEHADKEE News Oct. 1st Mr. J.L.B. Green happened to a serious accident a few days ago by sticking a forty penny nail through his left hand inflicting a painful wound. --- LOCAL News Dr. and Mrs. A.J. Gay are moving today to Birmingham where the former will be connected with a hospital in that city. The friends of this couple wish them success in their new home while regretting to lose them from Roanoke. --- CARD OF THANKS We take this method of expressing our heartfelt thanks to the doctors and nurses and our dear friends and relatives for their kindness during the sickness and death of our dear wife and mother. J.D. Vinson, Charlie Vinson, Calvin Vinson ---- MR. J.H. STRONG'S FATHER DIED SEPTEMBER 30th Mr. Robert H. Strong, father of Mr. Jos. H. Strong of this city, died last Sunday at the home of the deceased in LaGrange after a long period of declining strength. He was 87 years of age and the father of seven sons and two daughters. Mr. Strong was a Confederate veteran, a long time member of the Baptist church and was one of the most respected citizens of LaGrange. The funeral and interment was in LaGrange on Monday afternoon. In addition to Mr. J.H. Strong and family, there attended from this place Dr. W.P. Hines and Mesdames M.W. Carlisle, J.C. Wright and A.J. Langley. Dr. Hines had a part in the services. ---- NEW HOPE News Oct. 1st Mr. T.C. Wilson celebrated his 58th birthday yesterday. Several others' birthdays come today so they had a community birthday dinner at Mr. Wilson's yesterday. --- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. F.R. Lane went to Ashland last Friday to attend the funeral of the latter's father Mr. J.A. White, a prominent citizen of that place. ---- Rev. W.P. Cofield of Lee county visited his father Mr. W.W. Cofield from Friday till Sunday afternoon. --- Mr. L.R. Chase and sons W.E. Chase, O.D. Chase and E.E. Chase with the latter's family, attended last Friday the funeral of the former's son, Walter Chase, aged 45 years, who died Thursday at Woodlawn in Beat 4, after an illness extending back to April. Interment was at Zion church. ---- WOODLAWN News Oct. 1st. Mrs. Nettie Daniel Frost was buried at Zion church last Wednesday. She was a member of Zion church and leaves a husband and four sons to mourn her death. Rev. J.H. Hester and Mr. Kent conducted the funeral services. --- Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Daniel and children of North Alabama attended the funeral of the former's sister. --- On Thursday, Mr. Walter Chase was buried at Zion church. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn his death. He was a member of the Baptist church. ---- BACON LEVEL News Oct. 1st This community was made sad on Saturday afternoon by the death of Mrs. J.D. Vinson. Funeral services were conducted in the home Sunday afternoon by Dr. Hines. The deceased leaves a husband and two sons and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her death. --- Mr. R.D. Gladney, J.K. Bennett and Mrs. Alice Arnett and other relatives from LaGrange were here Sunday to attend the funeral of Mrs. Vinson. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 10, 1923 GEO. W. STEVENS DIED SUDDENLY MONDAY NIGHT George W. Stevens died suddenly at 11 o'clock Monday evening at his home in this place. He was as well and active as usual until death seized upon him. He was 64 years of age and spent nearly all his life in this county, having been born at Rock Mills. He was one of the county's most widely known citizens. Mr. Stevens was a graduate of Auburn and was well equipped for the duties of life. Many of the best years of his life were devoted to teaching in which profession he made a good reputation. He taught in Rock Mills, Roanoke, Lineville and Wedowee. He then served a while as clerk in the Probate office under Judge Kaylor and later engaged in business in Roanoke. He was a member of the Baptist church and at one time served as moderator of the Randolph County Association. Mr. Stevens was a man of jovial and friendly disposition. The deceased is survived by his wife and four children who are Mrs. Ucal Stevens Lewis of Chicago, Mrs. E.W. Ross of Barnesville, Georgia, Mrs. J.W. Archer of Sepulka, Oklahoma and Mr. Carey Stevens of Macon, Georgia. The latter and Mrs. Ross are here. The others will arrive today. The funeral services will occur at the First Baptist church at 10 o'clock Thursday morning conducted by Dr. Hines the pastor and interment will follow in the city cemetery. ---- CARD OF THANKS We would like so much to express our thanks to our many friends and neighbors, also our physicians, for their many kindnesses and words of sympathy shown us during the sickness and at the death of our son, husband and father. But at this sad hour we fail to find words to express our thanks, and can only say, may God's richest blessings rest upon each and every one. Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Fincher, Mrs. Lonnie Fincher and children ---- ALMOND News Oct. 8th A car turned over the other day with Grandma Shockley, Tilton Windsor, Henry Price, Jim Thompson and Blake Noel. All escaped injury except the former who was bruised pretty badly. --- LOCAL News Mr. Bowdon Brown, well known citizen of Route 1, celebrated last Sunday his 77th birthday. He is one of the soldiers and survivors of the Confederacy and is still strong and full of the old time fire. There were 125 people present upon the occasion of the happy celebration. --- Mr. Thos. J. McCarley was one of the Confederate heroes who attended the state soldier's reunion in Huntsville last week. ---- Howard H. Kitchens who was reared in this vicinity and who is now at the head of a prosperous garage business in Erie, Pa., sends a check for $3. for renewal of his newspaper subscription saying that he very much enjoys his home town paper. --- WEHADKEE News Oct. 8th Mrs. S.D. Lewis and Mrs. F.A. Hill went to Bremen, Georgia last Thursday to visit their sister Mrs. F.B. Brazeal. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 17, 1923 WEDOWEE News Oct. 15th Sunday evening, Miss Erma Bailey and Mr. Osward Holmes took a trip to Heard County, Georgia and were married while over there. The bride is the daughter of Mr. Tom Bailey and is one of Wedowee's brightest young ladies. Mr. Holmes is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charley Holmes who lives in the Swagg community, about eight miles west of Wedowee. We wish for these young people a happy life. ---- Mr. Perry Bailey who lives in East Point, Georgia is visiting his brother Mr. Tom Bailey. He came here last week to attend the burial of his mother Mrs. Ann Bailey which took place at Haywood. Mr. Bailey was reared in this county and his many friends are glad to see him. ---- FORMER RANDOLPH COUNTY MAN DIED IN GEORGIA While engaged at work Monday afternoon about 3:30 o'clock, Mr. W.J. Harper, a well known citizen of LaGrange, was seized with an acute attack of indigestion and died in a few moments. Mr. Harper was a native of Heard County, Georgia and at the time of his death was 44 years of age. When a young man he moved from Randolph county, Ala., to LaGrange where he had made his home since, being an employee of the International Cotton Mill. Mr. Harper is survived by his widow, two sons, E.J. and Monroe Harper; two daughters, Ophelia and Mary Harper of Shawmut, Ala.; three brothers, C.A. Harper of Roanoke, Ala.; C. Harper of Roanoke, Ala., G.C. Harper of LaGrange; three sisters, Mrs. Georgia Harris and Mrs. Lula Norred of Roanoke, and Mrs. Emma Norris of Columbus. The LaGrange Graphic ----- NEGRO 84 YEARS OF AGE IS CUTTING CROSS TIES This is the record of a Randolph county negro who lives in the mountains a few miles up the river from Malone. A member of the Roanoke Realty Company and Mr. J.T. Talley were in there trying to locate some land and were instructed to find Morrison Marable, 84 years of age, who knew all the land in that section of the county. They found him cutting cross ties. When asked to show them around he readily consented and the way he led the two Roanokers over the mountains was a sight. He says that he located where he now lives 53 years ago and has raised a family of 19 children, but only two are with him now. As he was seen last week it could be said of him that "his eye was not dim nor his natural force abated." ----- DEATH OF MR. H.F. HODGE Mr. H. Frank Hodge, one of Wadley's most prominent citizens, died at the Piedmont Infirmary in Atlanta on Oct. 11th and was buried at Wadley by the Knights of Pythias last Saturday. Mr. Hodge was vice president of the Bank of Wadley and was known and loved by a large circle of friends. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and one son. ---- MR. KING PRATHER WEDS MISS WHITE IN LAGRANGE The many friends of Mr. King Prather, one of our most deserving and popular young business men, will be pleased to learn of his good fortune in winning as his life partner Miss Essie White, an estimable young lady of LaGrange, Ga. The marriage occurred at the home of the bride in that city Sunday morining. The bride and groom left on the afternoon train for Birmingham where the will spend a few days. Returning, they will be at home with the groom's mother, Mrs. M.A. Prather. ---- MISS MARY JEFFERS DIED TUESDAY The passing out of this life of Miss Mary Thenie Jeffers at 11:30 Tuesday morning at the home of her mother, Mrs. Susie Jeffers in this city, caused a pang of sorrow to pierce the heart of everyone who knew this bright, lovable girl, and called forth the profound sympathy of every friend of the stricken family. Miss Jeffers had been ill a week or more of erysipelas, affecting the head and face. Funeral services will be conducted at the First Baptist church at three o'clock Thursday afternoon by the pastor, Dr. Hines. It is expected that by the time all members of the family will be here except Miss Irene who is a missionary in China. The deceased was a devoted member of the church. She was also a member of the Senior Class of the Handley High School. This affliction is doubly sad, as the husband and father Mr. J.A. Jeffers died in the early part of this year. ---- PLEASANT HILL News Oct. 15th Mr. Rube McGill of Bessemer came down Saturday night and married Miss Mozelle Noel on Sunday morning, returning to Bessemer on the noon train. --- WOODLAND News Oct. 15th Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Beck leave this week to make their home in Akron, Ohio. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 24, 1923 LOWELL News The 15 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clem Clifton that died Sunday night was buried at Lebanon on Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. with services conducted by Rev. F.M. Vann. ---- LOCAL News Rev. Joe Jeffers who was called to Roanoke last week by the death of his sister Miss Mary Thenie Jeffers, returned Tuesday to Mexia, Texas where is now serving full time as pastor of the First Baptist church of that city. While here he preached on Sunday night to the pleasure of the congregation of the First Baptist church. ---- ALMOND News Oct. 22nd Mr. Gromer Shockley and Miss Ezra Moncus motored to Evansville, Georgia last Sunday where they were married. They are at home with the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Moncus. --- AVA News Oct. 22nd Mr. Virgil Roberts and Miss Rosa Campbell were married at the home of Rev. and Mrs. John Wilder yesterday morning. --- FRIENDSHIP News Oct. 22nd Mrs. Eva Harmon, a well known christian woman of this community, died on Thursday. --- LOCAL News Mr. M.L. Cook and daughter Mrs. Bud Barrett and the latter's husband of LaFayette were guests Sunday in the home of the former's brother Mr. W.H. Cook. --- Some interest was caused by the article in the Leader about an eighty-four year old negro cutting cross ties. Garrett Holloway goes one better by reporting that his eighty-nine year old father John Holloway in Beat 3 has been indulging in the same vigorous exercise. Can any one of our readers carry us into the nineties on this proposition? ---- J.R. Tidwell will go tomorrow to Tampa, Florida where he works for the Seabord Air Line. --- Mrs. T.A. Wyley accompanied by her husband, her mother and aunt, went to Atlanta on Tuesday where she will enter a hospital for treatment. She has been quite ill for several weeks. --- B.F. Simms was awarded damages in an Atlanta court last week of $37,500. against the street car company for the loss of the former's leg in an accident in that city nearly two years ago. Mr. J.R. Simms, father of that young man, has a suite pending to recover for the hospital expenses of his son, which will come up for trial in December. ---- ROCK MILLS News Oct. 22nd A wedding occurred here Wednesday morning at ten o'clock when Miss Mae Albright was married to Mr. Guy Layton. Rev. W.J. Layton, father of the groom, performed the ceremony. The happy couple left immediately for Birmingham where the groom has a position in a drug store. We wish much happiness for this couple. --- WEHADKEE News Oct. 22nd Sunday afternoon, Mr. Elmore Davis and Miss Mamie Moses of the Omaha community went over to Georgia and were married. --- NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, October 31, 1923 WOODLAND News Oct. 29th Mrs. Emily Mashburn and daughter Lemerle were the weekend guests of the former's daughter Mrs. L.W. Tomlinson. --- Mr. Harry Lee Hall returned home Friday after spending several weeks in Talladega. He was accompanied home by his sister Mrs. Wellington Nelson and children. They are visiting her father Mr. J.W. Hall. --- Dr. J.H. Traylor and family leave this morning for Chavies, Ala., where they will make their home. --- CORINTH News Oct. 29th Mr. and Mrs. Henry Taylor leave for morning for Tuscaloosa where they will make their home for awhile. --- Sorry to report that Mrs. W.W. Knight is very sick. --- LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Braswell have heard from their son Pope who has been working up north as an electrician, that he has arrived in Havana, Cuba to try his fortune there. --- LAND SALE We, the undersigned, under and by virtue of the authority vested in us as Executors of the Last Will and Testament of Amanda L.
