One hundred and two years ago this coming October, Mrs. Noles was born on a farm situated on the spot now known as Opelika, Alabama. A short time later, the family moved to another small farm near Tuscaloosa, where she lived throughout the years of the War Between the States. During this time, she recalls very vividly occasional visits to the surrounding communities by Jefferson Davis, then President of the Confederacy. Some few years afterwards, Mrs. Noles moved to Randolph County and settled on the forty-acre farm on which she now lives. Her place has been farmed for some years now by one of her sons, even though Mrs. Noles still picks her share of the cotton during the picking season. She also takes a good deal of pride in her garden, in which she was hoeing away at the time she was approached by the writer of this article. Corn, potatoes, and roses appear to be her specialty, although she grows a variety of other vegetables and flowers. One of the most notable events in recent years, as far as Mrs. Noles is concerned, came about only last year when her four sons finally persuaded her to let them have the old home place wired for electricity. Now one of the more ardent boosters of the Alabama Power Company in the community is Mrs. Julie Noles. She says she likes it best in the kitchen where it does her churning. As soon as appliances become readily available, her sons have promised her an electric pump and refrigerator to further lighten her household duties. Although Mrs. Noles is nearing the ripe old age of 102, her only recent period of inactivity was during a slight case of blood poisoning last year. Healthy, happy, and active, Mrs. Noles is truly at grand old lady.
