Trent and family of Atlanta, visited the family of Dr. P.G. Trent Sr., last week. __ Rev. Malcolm Purcell who is teaching in South Alabama, visited his parents here last week. __ Mr. and Mrs. Addison E. White of Lumberton, N.C. spent the latter part of last week with relatives in Roanoke. __ Mrs. Tom Ussery has had as her guests the past few days, Misses Kate Stillwell of LaGrange and Hendrix of South Carolina. __ Word has been received here of the death of Tod Davis in Texas who formerly lived near Roanoke. His death resulted from pneumonia. __ Mrs. J.C. Wright has had as her guests the past few days Mrs. Neal of Thompson, GA and Mrs. Johnston and Miss Bessie Wright of Tuskegee. __ The Daughter's of the Confederacy will meet at Mrs. Guy Handley's tomorrow afternoon. A full attendance is requested, as officers are to be elected. __ Last Thursday evening at the home of the bride's parents Mr. and Mrs. E.S. Burns at Corbin, Rev. Clare Purcell united in marriage Mr. C.L. Webb of Carrollton, GA and Miss Maggie Burns. __ R.W. Griffin is on a trip to Texas and will return about the 15th inst. __ A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Enloe Monday morning. __ F.D. Hodges is enjoying a visit from his mother and also from his sister, Mrs. Ellis of Abbeville, S.C. __ John W. Kelton was married to Miss Mary Harper at Wadley on Christmas Day, Rev. J.H. Clegg officating. __ About 2 o'clock last Thursday morning the old residence formerly owned by the late Mrs. Mary White on Rock Mills Street, and occupied by W.L. Allen caught fire and was rapidly consumed. Mr. Allen came near sleeping too long to make his escape. His family was in Atlanta. The contents were destroyed but were partly insured. The house was the property of N.B. McPherson and was insured. __ W.P. Cook and wife of Lanett visited relatives here last week. __ John W. Henson killed a young man named Hale at Sewell the latter part of last week and made his escape. We did not learn the cause. Doubtless whiskey played its part. __ Mr. M.V. Hudson Sr. is another old subscriber who gives The Leader a good moral and financial support. He called yesterday and paid his subscription over a year in advance. Mr. Hudson will be 71 years old next Saturday and was never drunk in his life and has never answered a summons to court except as juror or witness. __ PUBLIC SALE I will offer for sale Monday Jan. 20, 1908, at my place, two miles north of High Shoals, my farm of 160 acres, farming tools, 125 bushels of corn, quantity of cotton seed and fodder, 2 mules, 3 cows, 2 hogs, 1 buggy, 1 surry, 2 wagons, blacksmith tools, household and kitchen furniture. Bennett. __ Amos Bennett of LaGrange spent last week here with relatives. __ Dr. T.L. Vineyard and Miss Annie May Moore were married at the home of the bride near Glenn last Sunday. __ Miss Dora Foster expects to go to Atlanta soon where she will visit her sister Mrs. Jesse Kenney. __ H.W. Hamby is visiting in Mississippi. __ BACON LEVEL News O.L. Bradshaw of Greenville spent part of last week with his mother's family. __ E.D. Crouch and Austin Bradshaw of Atlanta are visiting relatives here. __ T.H. Russell of Frolona, GA visited relatives here part of last week. __ W.L. Bradshaw came home from Hamilton, GA to spend Christmas here. __ W.E. Blanks, wife and little son of Lineville are visiting relatives here. __ M.W. Lane is preparing to build a new dwelling. __ N.W. Mrs. Malinda Janney and Family. ___ LOCAL News Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Manning who spent the holidays with the latter's mother, Mrs. Lee Stitt at Wehadkee are now living at Ensley. __ Elton Taylor who has been spending two weeks with homefolks, returned Tuesday to Union Springs and from there he will go to Troy where he will make his headquarters. __ I.W. Meacham called to see us Thursday on his way back to his home near Oenaville, Texas, after a two week visit to relatives in Randolph. __ Mr. Nick Wheeler, a well known citizen, died at Stroud on Sunday. __ Ernest Fowler has returned to his home in LaGrange. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 15, 1908 CORBIN Community News Mrs. Rena Fields has been on the sick list for several days. __ Mrs. L.M. Wilson is suffering with lagrippe. __ Mrs. E.R. Burns of Marbury, Ala., is visting relatives in this section. __ Mrs. Lizzie Benefield of LaGrange is visiting her parents near this place. __ WEHADKEE Community News James Prestridge is putting down a saw mill near this place and will saw a large contract of lumber for Sam Walker. __ ROCK MILLS News Mrs. Philip Mooney returned Sunday from a visit to her son in Denver, GA. __ W.R. Bennett and family have moved to LaGrange. We regret losing these fine people from our town. __ Miss Claudia Henry and George Kirby were married Sunday at the home of Reaves Turner, Rev. A.J. Coats officiating. __ Courtney Bonner is very ill with typhoid fever. Miss Dunman, a trained nurse at Chipley is with him. __ Mr. and Mrs. L.H. Hearn of Lanett are spending a while with relatives here. __ Mrs. Luther Stitt of Wehadkee visited her parents Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Jones last week. __ A BUNCH OF BIRTHDAYS Last Friday it was the writer's good fortune with Brother Stoves, to be invited to dine with Dr. and Mrs. Striplin. The occasion was the 70th birthday of Mrs. Striplin's mother Mrs. Hagan. It was gratifying to see this good woman in such full possession of her mental and physical powers and better still, young in hope and spirit. The writer has the greatest respect and veneration for the old people who have done so much to create the pleasant conditions which we today enjoy and we are always glad of an opportunity of doing them honor. Upon this occasion the spirit of good cheer resigned supreme. One of the best dinners that we ever ate was served and the editor's appreciation of it was only enhanced by the fact that January 10th was his natal day also. The next day, we had the pleasure of dining with Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Jordan and enjoyed another delightful fest of fellowship and good things to satisfy the phyiscal man. The occasion was the birthday of Mr. Jordan, also of Mrs. Dale, a boarder, while Mrs. Jordan's birthday was only two days previous. ___ The marriage of L.J. Carlisle of this city to Miss May Mayfield at her home near Dublin, took place last week at 7 o'clock, Rev. E.P. Maxwell officiating. The above notice from the Stamford Texas Tribune will be read with interest by many friends in this county. The groom is the son of Mrs. J.B. Carlisle who lives near town and who are among our best people. __ LOCAL News A.C. Brannen of Montezuma, GA was in Roanoke the first of the week prospecting and was well pleased. __ Mrs. E.R. Burns of Marbury who is spending a few weeks at her old home near Wehadke was an appreciated caller at this office on Thursday. __ Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Sykes are now keeping house in the J.W. Jackson residence, Mr. and Mrs. Jackson having moved to their farm near Bacon Level some time ago. __ J. Perry Lewis, son of S.D. Lewis, was married to Miss Bela Green, daughter of J.R. Green, last Sunday. The ceremony was performed by H.H. Alsobrook in Heard County, Georgia. __ A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Anderson Clemons on Monday morning. __ Mr. and Mrs. George Caswell left Monday on their return trip to Norton, Texas. __ Mrs. W.H. Huffaker returned to her home in Newnan on Friday after a visit to the family of her father, Jesse Fausett. __ Mrs. Fannie Beverly died Wednesday at her home several miles north of town. She was 74 years of age and was a sister of Marshal Ford of this city. __ Mrs. O.L. Veazy, who has been spending a few weeks with the family of her father, Jesse Fausett, will leave in a few days for her home near Birmingham. __ Mrs. Jas. A. Wilson, while visiting her sister, Mrs. John A. Carlisle last Friday, called at this office and paid her subscription account over a year in advance. __ We are pleased to note that the Daughters of the Confederacy will have an interesting meeting tomorrow afternoon at the home of Mrs. Wade Carlisle and celebrate the birthday of Robt. E. Lee, which falls on next Sunday. __ Mrs. Pendergast is quite sick at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O.D. Slay. __ Anderson R. Phelps is quite sick at the home of his brother, R.P. Phelps on Roanoke Heights. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 22, 1908 WEHADKEE Community News John Norred has sold his farm and will move to Marion County on account of roads. __ W.B. Crouch has built a new barn. __ Luther Benefield who moved to Marion County some time ago has moved back. He says he is contented to live in old Randolph. __ Ed H. Green, son of A.J. Green, and Miss Maude Hill of Frolona, GA were married last Sunday. The ceremony was performed by H.H. Alsobrook in Heard County, Georgia. __ LOCAL News We again have a supply of old newspapers on hand at The Leader office. Fifteen cents per 100 copies. __ Mrs. Lillian Parrish returned last week from a three week visit to her brother John White in Girard. __ Marshal Ford last week handed us a dollar to have The Leader sent to his brother in Texas. __ R.O. Mooty and family spent the past few days at the former's father's in Franklin, GA. __ Mrs. R.L. Newman of Omaha, Nebraska is visiting her sister, Mrs. E.R. Finney. __ Miss Marie Glenn of Columbus, GA is visiting her aunt, Mrs. F.P. Nichols. __ Miss Gatha Tomlin is visiting her sister Mrs. T.O. Williams this week. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, January 29, 1908 LOCAL News Will Dollar, son of Jim Dollar, was accidently shot Friday at Level Road and died on MOnday. __ Mrs. Maddox has come to spend some time with her daughter, Mrs. Brittain who has been ill of fever for some time but who is improving. __ Deputy John Windom went to Lamar on Monday and arrested three men for illicit whiskey. There have been several arrests since the temperance meeting here. Wedowee Star __ E.M. Moore returned from Atlanta Friday where he went to meet his mother who came from Bremen, S.C. to spend two weeks with her son. __ Mrs. W.G. Floyd went Sunday to Bronwood, GA to make the acquaintance of her first granddaughter, who arrived Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. T.J. Barrett. __ W.W. Pittman reports that his family have all been ill with the grip.
