McManus has been sick for several days resulting from being kicked by his plow handle. __ Mr. and Mrs. Albert Strain are the happy parents of a new boy. __ ROCK MILLS News S.T. Keeble and Miss Allien Kirby were married Sunday, Rev. A.J. Coats officiating. __ Mrs. C.H. Ray and sister Miss Maggie visited relatives here last week. --- Mr. Frank Cook, formerly of this place, died at his home near Glenn on Sunday morning. Mr. Cook leaves a wife and several small children. __ LOCAL News Sam Abernathy enjoyed a visit Sunday from his father W.F. Abernathy. __ Dr. W.S. Trent leaves today for Virginia, where he will spent a few weeks visiting relatives. Franklin News & Banner. ___ Mr. and Mrs. John Leonard Bradshaw announce the engagement of their daughter Lenora Allice to Mr. James Monroe Wallace. The wedding will occur on the evening of Wednesday, June 17th, 1908 at the Lanett Baptist Church. West Point News ___ Several weeks ago The Leader recorded several deaths, under one heading. Among these was the announcement of the death of the wife of Mr. A.A. Cook. This week it becomes our sad duty to publish the news of the death of Mr. T.F. Cook and Mrs. M.L. Cook, nephew and sister-in-law, respectively, of Mr. A.A. Cook. Several other deaths have occured in this family in late years. Mr. Frank Cook resided in Roanoke some two years ago but moved to Glenn, GA where he died Saturday night after a three day illness. He was buried at Glenn Sunday afternoon, Elder W.R. Avery conducting the services. Mr. Cook was known as a good citizen. He leaves a dependent family. At an early hour Saturday morning Mrs. M.L. Cook died at her home in east Roanoke. She had been ill about one week. The interment was at Bethel on Sunday morning after funeral services conducted by Rev. R.B. Hester, witnessed by many sympathetic friends. The deceased leaves a husband and several grown children to mourn the loss of a good wife and mother. __ At 3 o'clock yesterday morning the three months old child of Prof. T.J. Barrett died at the home of its grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. W.G. Floyd, who have tenderly cared for it since the death of its mother. The doubly bereaved father will arrive this morning after which the interment will occur in the city cemetery. ---- Mrs. W.J. Johnson died Monday night at Wadley. She had suffered a long time with cancer. She was a half sister of Mr. Z.P. Gunn, of Roanoke. __ W.M. Hammond of Wehadkee vicinity was a caller Sunday who enrolled his name among the new subscribers who are continually coming our way. Mr. Hammond said his neighbors had been telling him The Leader was a good paper. __ The Leader regrets to chronicle the death of the wife of county treasurer W.M. Mathews which occurred in Wedowee last Thursday. She leaves four small children. __ R.T. West is expecting his mother to arrive today or tomorrow from Ozark, MO., to spend some time with him. __ Mrs. George Thomas arrived Friday from Nashville to spend a month with her father, W.S. Mayfield and other relatives. __ Mrs. J.R. Cumbee spent Sunday with her sister, Mrs. W.Z. East, and her father G.W. Ellington who was here on a visit from Gold Hill. __ Marvin Stewart of Erick, Oklahoma arrived last Thursday to spent a few weeks at his old home here. He is being cordially welcomed by his former neighbors who are pleased to learn that he is doing well in the new state. __ Mrs. W.M. Sykes returned last Thursday from Rockmart, GA where she was called by the death of her father. Mrs. Sykes was accompanied upon her return as far as Atlanta by her mother Mrs. Johnston and her sister Miss Ruby Johnston. The Leader is pleased to note that Mrs. and Miss Johnston will arrive in Roanoke in about ten days and make this their home for the present at least. ___ Mrs. C.N. Shearer has been the guest of her sister Mrs. Schuessler several days past. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, May 13, 1908 WEHADKEE News J.B. Jones, of Rock Mills, spent a few days last week with his daughter of that place, Mrs. L.W. Stitt. __ Miss Lizzie, daughter of Rev. J.B. Strickland died a week ago after a short illness of pneumonia. Her sister Miss Evie is improving. This family has the sympathy of many friends and relatives in their sad bereavement. __ We are sorry to note that Uncle Billie Gay is very sick. __ ROCK MILLS News Mrs. and Mrs. W.K. Bennett visited their daughter, Mrs. Hodge Talbot near Opelika last week. __ Mrs. George Dunn of Atlanta and Mrs. Allen of Roanoke spent Sunday with their sister, Mrs. T.T. Harper. __ Robert, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Bailey, died at his home near Lime on Sunday night. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family. __ LOCAL News I have put up a corn mill near my planer and will have Mr. W.H. Barker in charge. Will grind corn Wednesdays and Saturdays. W.S. Kirk __ M.V. Hudson Sr. was in town yesterday. He reported that a young negro had badly cut the latter's father-in-law on Sunday in Bacon Level. __ Friday night at Milltown occurred the death of Mr. Robt. T. Gaines, an aged and honored citizen. He was the father of Dr. W.D. Gaines of LaFayette. The interment was at Milltown Saturday afternoon. __ Mrs. Sanders will leave this morning to spend some time with her sister at St. David's Road, PA. __ Mrs. Lane returned home Thursday from a visit to her son Rev. Jas. T. Lane at Hoke's Bluff. __ LOST - - Sunday night between my home and the Baptist church, a gold nugget stick pin. The finder will please return it and receive reward. Mrs. W.J. Snow __ Ben Handley is recovering from a threatened attack of fever. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, May 20, 1908 BACON LEVEL News Mrs. S.D. Burdett of Lanett spent the week with her son R.A. Burdett. __ Erwin Blanks of Lineville visited relatives here last week and returned yesterday, accompanied by his mother in law, Mrs. M.V. Hudson Sr. __ Mr. James M. Wallace of West Point, visited the family of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Bradshaw Saturday and Sunday. __ Mrs. R.L. Bradshaw and children Murla and Robert Gibson, spent yesterday with the former's mother, Mrs. William Gamble of Lime. __ WEHADKEE News Mr. W.J. Gay, who was very sick at our last writing, died on Sunday morning and was buried last Monday at Hillabahatchee. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. James Bagwell. The deceased was 80 years old and had been a consistent member of the Primitive Baptist church about fifty years. He was one of the county's best citizens and will be sadly missed. S.D. Lewis __ LOCAL News ROBERT BARNES DEAD Just before noon Mr. Barnes died at the Arlington Hotel. He had been in feeble health for some time. He was an uncle of Mrs. H.J. Turns who with Mr. Turns, graciously cared for him in his last illness. The remains were carried to Rock Springs in Chambers county and interred on Monday. ___ Miss Lulu Dupree who has been teaching at Union Springs, arrived Sunday to visit Miss Newton, her half sister. __ Mrs. Thomas Wood of Roanoke will be the guest of her sister Mrs. Arnold S. Smith for several days. Alex. City Outlook __ Louis Bingham of Ashland spent Sunday in Roanoke. __ B.O. Driver is still on crutches as a result of being thrown from his buggy two weeks ago, but his injured ankle is improving. __ Mrs. V.E. Stewart and daughter Miss Lola of LaGrange are visiting the family of J.T. Baird near town. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Wednesday, May 27, 1908 LOCAL News Miss Mary Burke of near Roanoke and Mr. Otis Gay of Muscadine were happily married Sunday, Rev. G.H. Shadix performing the ceremony. __ Mrs. J.M. Edwards of Fredonia, died suddenly in the depot at LaGrange last Thursday. __ Captain and Mrs. William H. Wright of Tuskegee are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Wright. __ Mrs. A. M. Johnson with her father of Norfolk, VA are visiting relatives in this section. __ Mrs. J.C.
