She will remain a week or two. __ Our county jail presents the rather unusual spectacle of a female incarcerated for carrying concealed weapons. She is a young colored damsel by the name of Mary Etta Treadwell. __ JAIL News There are now eleven prisoners in the county jail, quite a large number for a peaceful, lawbiding county like Randolph. They are as follows: White Lem Clifton charged with murder Aaron Fincher charged with assault with intent to murder Isaac Daniel charged with murder Jack Chappell charged with assault with intent to murder John Hollis, charged with larceny Colored Isaac Williams, grand larceny King Busbee, illicit distilling Marion Jones, convicted of petty larceny Albert Johnson, disturbing religious worship Ed Mann, convicted on charge of cruelty to animals Mary Etta Treadwell, charged with carrying concealed pistol ___ NAPOLEON News Old "Granny" Hall, one of the oldest women of our county, was buried at the Big Spring Cemetery last Friday. She was about 94 years old. The old pioneers of our community are thus passing away. Burrell Nail and Isaac Smith only are left about here. __ G.F. Lester is proud of a late addition to his family, another girl. __ Christian friends assembled at the home of brother L.W. Townsend on Sunday afternoon. Sister Townsend has been an invalid, not able to walk, for several years. __ GRAHAM News Two young men at Bowdon, GA were struck by lightning on the 23rd and were instantly killed. They were both in the field tying oats. One of the parties was the grandson of J.W. Downs and the other man by the name of Casuett. __ Mr. T.A. Cheeves and wife and Miss Rebecca Cheeves returned from Texas on the 23rd. Mr. Cheeves states that the crops are the finest he ever saw them. He says the corn will make 50 bushels to the acre. Wheat and oats are also fine. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, July 9, 1897 NOTICE FOR PUBLICATION Land office at Montgomery June 17, 1897 Notice is hereby given that the following named settler has filed notice of his intention to make final proof in support of his homestead claim and that said proof will be made before the Clerk of the Circuit Court at Wedowee, Ala., on August 10, 1897, viz: Ambus E. Hill, Homestead Entry No. 26,636 for the fraction section 10, fraction B and SE 1/4 of NW 1/4 section 11, twp. 19 south of range 10 East. He names the following witnesses to prove his continuous residence upon and cultivation of said land, viz: Tom Yarbrough, Hillard Boggs, Jerrt. McClung, John W. Boggs, all of Milner, Ala. ____ LOCAL News Mrs. W.H. Mitchell is sick at the home of her father Mr. Willoughby. __ Mrs. L.L. Greene, living about four miles southeast of town is reported quite sick. __ We are sorry to note that Mr. Hoyt Enloe is quite sick. He has been sick since Thursday night last with throat trouble. __ ABNER News Mr. John Peeples and Miss Idarah Harris were married recently at the home of the bride's parents, some four miles south of here. __ WEHADKEE News Mrs. Price of Franklin, GA has been spending several days with her daughter Mrs. Hood at this place. __ The funerals of Rev. T.A. Camp and wife will be preached at Big Spring the third Sunday in this month by Rev. J.D.H. Robinson of Bowdon, GA. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, July 16, 1897 CAMBRIDGE News Mrs. H.J. Dennis is very sick. __ Mr. T.E. Disharoon returned from a visit to his sons in Cleburne County yesterday. __ LOCAL News Mr. Jim Hill, aged twenty, son of T.W. Hill, nephew of G.O. Hill, was buried at Rock Mills last Saturday. __ OFELIA News Mr. John Burson is quite sick. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, July 23, 1897 LOCAL News Mrs. J.D. Weathers and little Lois left yesterday for a visit to Mrs. Weather's relatives in Atlanta. __ Miss Nannie McCaffery of Talladega County is visiting her aunt, Mrs. B.J. Ford of this place. __ Mr. W.F. Carlile visited his mother and family at Hanceville, Blount County last week and spent several days. His mother who is advanced in years was quite sick but when he left her she was much better. __ "Doodlebug" Jones of Pine Hill, Cleburne County, got up the other night and went to a certain closet to feel for a certain bottle, but in the darkness got a hold of a flask containing kerosene oil, and after taking a healthy snifter of it went back to bed. Next morning he complained of not resting well and remarked that "since these here blamed revenue men had got to cannonadin and cannonoodin over the country folks had got so they couldn't near make the same sort of whiskey they did forty years ago." He sure did for he brought his beautiful bride over to see us. __ Mrs. Willingham of Dingler visited her sister, Mrs. George Hendon on Saturday and Sunday. __ WEHADKEE News Col. M.T. Almond and wife of Texas, Georgia visited relatives here on Sunday. __ Mr. W.P. Ethridge, wife and daughter of Red Oak, GA visited relatives here Saturday and Sunday. __ Mrs. Nettie Pittman and children and Miss Mattie Pittman attended the all day singing at Bethel, GA last Sunday. __ CLACK News Mr. John Reaves wife is quite sick. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, July 30, 1897 LOCAL News Uncle Bill Lawson, colored, has preserved a document the like of which is not very often seen these days. It is a pass from his former owner, Booker Lawson Sr., dated Jan. 26, 1863, which authorizes "the boy Bill" to hire himself to any person in Randolph or Chambers Counties who might desire his services and receive pay for same. Uncle Bill prizes the document as a good recommendation which it is, showing that he, though a slave, enjoyed the full confidence of his master. ___ Miss Pearl Stallings of LaFayette, is visiting her cousin, Mrs. J.W. Young. __ Mr. and Mrs. H.R. Gay enjoyed a visit from their son, Mr. Mitchell Gay of West Point recently. Also, their neice and nephew, Mr. Harmon Blake and sister of the same place. __ CLACK News Mrs. John Reaves died last Thursday. She leaves a husband, four sons and one daughter and many friends to mourn her death.
