We have heard many who heard the evidence say it was not sufficient to convict and the jury did right. After about eighteen months confinement, Mr. Clifton will undoubtedly appreciate his liberty. The law has taken its course; let us hope that justice has been done. __ Three prisoners, Jack Chappell, Ed Laws and Noah Burke, all white men, made their escape from the county jail on Monday night. They were confined in the lower cell and someone from outside furnished them with a file with which they filed one of the window bars and made an opening sufficient to squeeze through. The men were considered foolish for attempting to escape under the circumstances as it would have been cheaper to remain. They only had $50. fines to settle, having plead guilty of the various offenses with which they were charged and sentenced last week. Sheriff Harris and Deputy Kent were at Roanoke attending court but were immediately notified and unless the escapees leave the country they will doubtless be caught. ___ File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/randolph/newspapers/nw136newspape.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/alfiles/ File size: 7.0 Kb
