J.F. and T.J. Lewis and their sisters Miss Ida and Janie of Hendrick, Ala., have spent several days with relatives in this community. __ Mr. J.F. Lewis and Miss Dora Harlin were united in marriage last Thursday evening at the bride's home near this place. Rev. J.B. Strickland officiated. __ NAPOLEON News Mr. Jeff Evans and family and Mr. Irvin and family are new arrivals in our neighborhood from Georgia. The former will farm with Mr. Bob Kirby and the latter with Mr. Ruf Yates. __ Mr. Lish Rollins was united in matrimony to Miss Mollie Evans at the home of the bride's father, Mr. John Evans, last Sunday morning. __ Messrs. George and Miligin Earnest, accompanied by their sisters, Misses Nora, Ola and Ella are visiting their uncle, Mr. Tom Worthum at Rockdale, this week. __ Mr. Tom Anderson, a citizen of our community, has returned from Texas where he lived several years past. He brings his family and comes to stay. Tom was one of our best citizens and we regretted his leaving but now gladly welcome him back. __ Troy McClendon leaves us for Texas next week. This will be Troy's third trip in as many years. __ Bailey Bros. has ginned eight hundred bales this year. Al Wood baled three hundred. The Waters gin at Haywood for lack of water perhaps ginned only one hundred, making a total of twelve hundred bales. Twenty two years ago we moved to this place from Talbot County, Georgia and then run the only gin anywhere about here and ginned all the cotton raised to the above named locations and never ginned over fifty or sixty bales in one season. Our town crop was then the largest we ginned and from then til now we have never planted over one third of our crop in cotton, have never given a mortgage nor moved over more than we could pay in the fall. Karl. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, January 14, 1898 LOCAL News Mr. Robert Bass has bought the W.A. Dean place, one mile south of town, and will reside there with his charming young bride. __ The Roanoke Saloon, Bryon Trammell, proprietor, is located in the Warehouse block, old post office stand. Fine whiskies and wines for medicinal and family use a speciality. __ Mr. J.C. Huckeba, formerly in business with his father and brother W.T., at the homestead south of town, has moved with his charming young wife to Wedowee and will hereafter be located in the business with his brother, Mr. L.C. Huckeba. __ Mr. Asberry Carlile, the well known blacksmith and all around mechanic, will occupy the shop near Huckeba's store, the same run by Mr. H.C. Camp last year. Mr. Carlile's son John will be associated with him. __ Mr. Harmon Gay has moved from the Lem Traylor cottage to the house occupied by Mr. H.C. Camp and family last year. Mr. Camp's family have returned to their old home near Malone's Ferry. Mr. Camp himself has been quite sick for sometime past and has not decided on his plans for the year. __ Mr. Asberry Carlile and family have moved to the Clifton homestead now owned by Mr. R.H. Ford and Mr. John Napier has moved to the place formerly occupied by Mr. Carlile about half mile north of town. __ Mr. Will Clifton has moved from the Mullins house to his own place south of town. __ Mr. William Whaley has moved into Sheriff Harris' house in rear of his residence. __ NON-RESIDENT NOTICE State of Alabama, Randolph County Chancery Court, Wedowee, Ala January 4, 1898 William Kight, Complaintant vs. India A. Kight, Defendant In this cause it is made to appear to the Register by the affidavit of R.S. Pate, attorney for the complaintant, that the defendant, India A. Kight, is a non resident of the state of Alabama and resides in the state of Texas; and further, that in the belief of said affiant the defendant, India A. Kight, is of the age of twenty-one years or older. It is therefore ordered that publication be made in the Randolph Toiler, a newspaper published in Randolph County, once a week for four consecutive weeks, requiring her, the said India A. Kight, to answer or demur the same, within thirty days after the 7th day of January 1898, and failing so to do, a decree pro confesso will be taken against her in said cause. Done at this office in Wedowee, Ala., this 4th day of January 1898. J.W. Stewart, Register in Chancery Court. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, January 21, 1898 LOCAL News We understand that Mr. W.N. Clifton is to move back from Anniston and will occupy the Lem Traylor cottage. __ H.D. Landers Jr., of Wildwood and his brother Mr. Van Landers came in yesterday evening and gave the Toiler a pleasant call. The latter is now a resident of Bernice and reports the old Pinetucky Gold Mines on quite a boom. He says the Alabama Gold Belt Mining Company now employs over 20 men. __ Rev. A.S. Brannon, after service in Wedowee at 11 o'clock on the third Saturday in February, will go to Ava school house and preach at night. He will also preach at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church near the residence of Mr. Green Edwards on Sunday at 3 o'clock. Those living in the neighborhoods mentioned are requested to circulate the news and endeavor to secure good congregations. __ Married on Tuesday afternoon last, Dr. J.C. Swann and Miss Cassie Dobson. __ The following letter conveys intelligence of the sad end of a young man who several weeks ago was bereft of his mental faculties and was sent from this county to the Insane Hospital at Tuskaloosa: Bryce Insane Hospital, Tuskaloosa Ala., Jan. 21, 1898 Mr. W.Y. Wright, Rockdale, Ala My dear sir, Jas. H. Woods died at this institution January 6, 1898 of maniacal exhaustion. He was extremely excited, noisy and destructive for a month after admission; he then lapsed into a stuporous condition from which he never recovered. His father in Arkansas was notified of his death. He was buried here in the hospital cemetery. Yours truly, J.T. Searcy, M.D., Sup't. It will be remembered that Mr. Woods lived near Cambridge this county, where it is said, he built up a neat and well ordered home, about which were notable evidence of thrift and enterprise. His young wife died after a protracted illness and it was only a short time prior to her death that Mr. Woods developed his fatal malady. Those who witnessed his condition while confined here will be be surprised to learn of his death. __ WEHADKEE News Mr. Henry Hooten of Clay County visited relatives here last Monday and Tuesday. __ Whooping cough is prevailing in this community. __ Mr. J.A. Ware and his daughter of Green's Chapel visited relatives near this place Saturday and Sunday. __ The death angel has visited our midst and called away "Grandma" Blackmon. She had lived to the good old age of eighty years. She leaves a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her loss. We extend sympathy. __ NEWSPAPER Issue of Friday, January 28, 1898 LOCAL News A write in the Roanoke Leader pays a high tribute to the worth and memory of John R. Arnett, formerly of this county, who lost his life on New Year's Day by the falling in of what is called a "chalk pit" in the mines at Robinson Springs, Elmore County, where he was working. Mr. Arnett was a member of the Baptist church and was formerly widely known as a singing teacher. He leaves a young wife, nee Miss Camelia Valentine, of Clayton, Barbour County; also many relatives, including his aged father who now resides in Texas. ___ NAPOLEON News Silas Hurley has been very sick with pneumonia but is now convalescent. __ "Aunt" Mary Smith has been an invalid eleven years and is now dying. She is the wife of "Uncle" Joe Smith, one of our best citizens. __ Brother J.A. Grant, who has been in our midst the last year, evangelizing, has returned to Arkansas. He reached home only a few hours before an awful cyclone passed through a portion of the state.
