May the lord bless her and her loved ones so that she will be restored to perfect health in a few days, is the earnest wish of her friends. __ Mr. Joe D. Washington's home was brightened on the second with a lovely young girl. Mother and baby are doing nicely. __ Mrs. H.W. Davis of Roanoke is visiting at Dr. Dean's this week. __ Miss Blanch Veal, a charming young lady at High Shoals, is visiting her sister, Mrs. R.H. Ford this week. __ Mr. and Mrs. William Bennett had a fine son born to them this week. Dr. Dean reports all doing well. __ The great clock in the tall tower is now in running order and keeping good time. It can be heard a long distance but not to Roanoke. __ There should be a good delegation from Wedowee to Roanoke tomorrow to attend the Veteran's meeting and the decoration of soldiers' graves. __ Mrs. J.W. Stewart left yesterday to Heflin to spend a week or two with her daughter Mrs. Thomason and family. __ The work on the new court house is now practically complete and most of the workmen are gone. __ WEHADKEE News The man who deals in the whiskey traffic always gets in trouble. We heard the sad news of the death of Mr. Lee Skipper, one of our neighbors. He was sent to the United States Penitentiary last May, at Columbus, Ohio. Thus by excessive drink and dealing in the liquor traffic he came to his death away from relatives and friends. __ Best corn whiskey on earth at the Roanoke Saloon, at $1.50 to $1.75 per gallon. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, May 13, 1898 LOCAL News Mr. Charlie Eichelberger is now running a restaurant and market in Roanoke. __ The Toiler had a pleasant call on Tuesday from Mr. George W. French, of near Cambridge, who came in to pay a years subscription to the paper. Mr. French is 88 years of age but has the appearance of a well preserved man of 65. He is lively and interesting in conversation, has a merry twinkle in his eye and enjoys a good joke. His health is excellent except a slight touch of rheumatism and has a good chanve to live to the age of 125 years as most men have to see 60. Come and see us again Mr. French; your presence acts like a tonic. __ Camp Aiken-Smith, United Confederate Veterans, held its annual meeting in Roanoke last Saturday morning and the usual business was transacted. She is spending a few days with her parents Mr. and Mrs. P.G .Bailey of this place. __ HIGH SHOALS News Miss Claudine Taylor who has been living with her uncle Bill Taylor of Carrollton, is visiting her parents and friends of this place. __ Mrs. J.R. Huckeba has gone to Green's Chapel to see her sister, Miss Fanny Ware, who is reported quite ill. __ We learn that Mr. Ben Guinn enlisted in an Oxford company to which he formerly belonged and is now in Mobile, Ala., in training to invade Cuba. Alabama will have no better soldier. __ Our young townsman Larkin Smith quietly left town a couple of weeks ago and enlisted in the army. He is reported to be in camps at Griffin, GA. Larkins will give a good account of himself. __ PEACE News Mr. J.A. Mitchell has been suffering from pneumonia for the past week but we are glad to report is much better. __ Peace has had two weddings recently. One widowers, Buck Meeks, married the widow Mitchim. Mr. Meeks has a family of five children and Mrs. Mitchim has seven. Mr. Jack Brooks and Miss Millie Mitchim are reported to have married this morning. Miss Mollie is the daughter of the bride of Mr. Meeks. Mr. Bud Mitchim has also left home. __ WEHADKEE News The war excitement is keeping politics cool in this corner. __ HAYWOOD News Mr. and Mrs. Williams from near Roanoke are visiting their daughter, Mrs. Perry Bailey. __ HIGH SHOAL News Mr. Frank Lee and wife visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Taylor on Sunday. __ Mr. R.E. Weathers returned home Wednesday after a three weeks visit to friends and relatives at Cuthbert and Montgomery. __ NEWSPAPER issue of Friday, May 27, 1898 LOCAL News Mrs. Amanda Clegg, aged about 75 years, a much loved lady of Almond, died on Friday last and was buried Saturday at Pleasant Hill Churchyard.
