This is a most commendable step, and will prove a great protection against the ravages of fire, since we now have waterworks and the city has ordered two reels and a thousand feet of hose. As soon as these things are in place headquarters will be located and every necessary detail provided for. The following is the roll of officers and members: H H CAUTHEN, Chief. H R OLDSON, Assistant Chief. H J TURNS, Foreman Reel No. 1. W A POOL, “ “ “ 2. W W WALLACE, Secretary. W T WEATHERS, Treasurer. G T JOHNSON, S H CARLISLE, Jr. C H RAY, G W ROBINSON, C M HESTER, W A VINSON, J T STEWART, J R RYAN, E L RYAN, Jr, C S HANNERS, Whit WHITMAN, C C NICHOLS, Jr, Fred WRIGHT. We suggest that when everything is in readiness permission be granted to fire some of the old worthless shacks around town and let the brave fire laddies get in their work in putting it out. Practice is what they need. [From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 12 Mar 1902, p.3]
