Roanoke Leader March 5, 1930
A most unusual case came before the circuit Court of Randolph County last week 
when Jack Andy Gore was tried, being charged with burglary and grand larceny, 
alleged to have entered the store of Mr. Scott Noles, a merchant in North 
Randolph, and took away goods amounting to about $75.00 in value. The defendant 
was lodged in jail at Wedowee last December, and, failing to make bond, remained 
there until his trial, which was called February 27th. For a week prior to his 
trial, he had refused food, had spoken to no one and gave no evidence of hearing 
when spoken to, apparently sleeping most of the time. When physicians were 
called in by the sheriff, they could find no physical cause for his strange 
behavior. When his case was called it took two deputies to force him from the 
jail to the court room. The defendant having employed no counsel, the judge 
appointed two attorneys to defend him, but he refused to discuss his case with 
them, giving no evidence of hearing or understanding them when they attempted to 
talk with him. Judge Brewer then had a hearing as to the sanity of the 
defendant, introducing as witnesses Dr. Lovvorn and Dr. Legare, of Wedowee, and 
Dr. Ussery, of Roanoke, who pronounced the defendant sane. A jury was empaneled 
and on hearing the testimony in the case returned a verdict of guilty in two 
cases. The court then sentenced the defendant to serve a term in the 
penitentiary of nine years and two months, minimum, and 14 years maximum.
