All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Linda Ayres http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00031.html#0007674 October 15, 2022, 3:35 pm Jacksonville Republican February 20, 1849 On the 24th of January 1849, a portion of the democratic party met in the Court House in the town of Wedowee, taken into consideration the propriety of calling upon the freemen of the County of Randolph, to appoint delegates to represent the democracy, in a convent on hereafter to meet, to nominate a Candidate to represent the 7th Congressional District in the next Congress of the United States, and also delegates to a Convention to meet in Montgomery, to nominate a candidate for Governor of the State, and to accomplish the appointment of delegates In said Convention, as well as to produce harmony amongst the different aspirants to seats in the next Legislature in the House of Representatives On motion of J. W. Guinn, Jeptha V. Smith was called to the Chair, and W. H. Wood requested to act as Secretary. After the object of the meeting was explained by the Chairman, Col. A Q. Nix, being called upon, addressed the meeting with his accustomed force and eloquence; upon the conclusion of which, J. W. Guinn introduced the following resolutions which were unanimously adopted: Resolved: That we invite the democracy of the 7th Congressional District Ip meet in Convention, at Wedowee, on the first Monday in May next, to nominate a candidate to be supported by the freeman of said district, in the approaching election, for a member of Congress for said district. Resolved: That we invite the members of the Democratic party to select five delegates from each beat in said county, to meet in the town of Wedowee, on the first Monday in April next, whose duty it shall be to select five delegates to represent Randolph County in the proposed Congressional Convention, to meet the first Monday in May next, at Wedowee, to nominate a candidate for Congress for the 7th, district. Resolved Further: That said County Convention nominate three delegates to represent Randolph County, in the proposed Convention to meet at Montgomery, in the spring, to nominate a candidate for Governor of the State. Resolved Further: That we invite the democracy of the County of Randolph, to clothe their delegates to the County Convention with power, if they deem the same expedient, to nominate two suitable persons to be supported by the republican party for seats in the next session of the Legislature. On motion, it was resolved that these proceedings be published in the Jacksonville Republican, and other papers of the district.
