The occasion was a quiet one and there was no unpleasantness. There were twice as many men voted for as were offices to be filled, so some had to be left out. The voter was left free to to [sic] take his choice from the entire list. The total vote cast was 201, which is probably not more than two-thirds of a full vote. The following is the vote in detail: FOR MAYOR: R L SCHUESSLER, 167 R E TAYLOR, 27 FOR COUNCILMEN: B C JONES, 154 John FAUSETT, 153 Z J WRIGHT, 146 C D MANLEY, 133 J W BELCHER, 95 W W WOOD, 88 A M AWBREY, 67 H H CAUTHEN, 61 G H HANDLEY, 50 J D WEATHERS, 31 From this it will be seen that Mr SCHUESSLER was elected mayor and Messrs JONES, FAUSETT, WRIGHT, MANLEY and BELCHER were elected councilmen. It is due Messrs TAYLOR, AWBREY, HANDLEY and WEATHERS to state that their names were not printed on the official ballot. Mr SCHUESSLER, the newly elected mayor, has been identified with Roanoke’s business life for the past eleven years. He has demonstrated his ability as an able financier, and by his affability he has won many warm personal friends. At present Mr SCHUESSLER is engaged in the loan business and has ample time to devote to the city’s interests, and it is to be hoped that under his careful management the affairs of our town will be placed upon a firm and prosperous basis. The councilmen elected to serve with him are men of experience, who have achieved success in their private business, and we trust they will have the cooperation of all the people in conducting the affairs of the municipality to the same degree of success. They together with the mayor-elect, will qualify and enter upon the duties of their offices within a few day.
