This week finds the four new brick stores in front of the warehouse completed and occupied Pinckard & Griffin from Opelika have opened a store on the corner and will fill the vacuum so long existing here in the Hardware Business. Next door to Pinckard & Griffin is A.J. Brummett of Campbell with stock furniture, Roanoke has been needing a store of the kind. The fourth store is occupied by C.R. Hightower & Co., from Lafayette with a large stock of drugs and fancy articles. T.J. Suggs from Lafayette is now painting signs for the above-named firms. Ballard & Holder have opened a large stock of groceries and dry goods under the Masonic Hall. Mr. Holder has been reared and educated in this county and is a model young man Mr. Ballard the senior partner is a successful merchant at Omaha several miles north of this place. Taylor Brothers have commenced business next door to Harper’s new brick store These gentlemen carry a mixed stock. The Mayfield House is about and is now opened for the weary traveler where he can get a good square meal a clean bed and polite attention. This will be a real Southern home for those seeking rest. Among the distinguished visitors meet this week are the following: Rev. Z. D. Roby and daughter from Opelika Mr. Roby preached two excellent sermons at the Baptist church Sunday and Sunday night. Prof. B. C. Jones principal of the high school at Antioch Ga and family visited his father Prof Leonidas Jones Saturday and Sunday Prof. B. C. Jones is one of the most successful teachers in Western Georgia. Rev. J. P. Shaffer financial secretary of Howard College at East Lake near Birmingham left this morning for the field of his labor Mr. Shaffer is pastor of the Baptist church here and comes home once a month. He was one of the founders of Roanoke Institute of which he was president many years. After this year he will remain in Roanoke to live and die with his brethren and friends of whom he has a host. Prof. Leon Stevenson who has been out teaching this summer is again in school in Roanoke Institute surveying the classic forum with Cicero and following the in mortal Xenophon with his ten thousand in the Amabasis. Mr. Fred Trammel from near Fredoria who has been out of school from sickness has returned again. W. M. Williams a former pupil of Roanoke Institute is now with C. R. Hightower & Co selling drugs and looking pleasing. Roanoke Institute has a larger attendance of pupils for this fall session than before in history. The spring session will begin the second Monday in January next, the same faculty retained.
