The robbery occurred about 10:30 when a large number of people were on the streets. Homer Lee and Luther Bevis happened to be in the bank at the time. The funds were insured. The robbers stopped a Chevrolet coach at the rear door of the bank building, headed north on Peachtree street, the engine being left running. They quickly covered those in the bank, making some of them lie down and ordering W. J. Mann, assistant cashier, at the point of a pistol to empty the cash into a sack held by one of the bandits, while Vachel Keeble was forced into the vault. All the others were then put in the - vault and the bolt turned on the door. A Chevrolet coach belonging to Lon Story, which was taken the night before, was used. It was abandoned at some point near Malone and later found. The sheriff and others pursued the robbers, but they made their getaway. Shortly after noon yesterday, Sheriff Ford and Chief of Police Cofield cooperating, Roy (Red) Workman, a young white man living several miles northwest of town, was arrested in a local barber shop and carried to Wedowee jail. He made the statement that he was in Birmingham the day of the robbery. The officers are still at work on the case. Just before going to press, it is learned that Sheriff Slay, of Chambers County, last night arrested Howard Breed, of this vicinity, in connection with the bank robbery in Roanoke last Thursday. Sheriff Ford went to Lanett this morning and landed Breed in the Randolph County jail. Other arrests are expected at any time.
