Stell BLAKE, of Wedowee, was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Alabama, on the 10th inst. The Colonel is a studious, conscientious and talented lawyer, and his friends are not surprised that he is reaching the top wrung of the ladder in his profession. It is a fortunate thing to achieve success; it [is] infinitely better to first deserve it, as has Colonel BLAKE. [From The Randolph Toiler (Wedowee, Randolph County, Alabama), 18 Jun 1897, p.3] --------- Stell BLAKE, 5 Oct 1867--22 Aug 1933, interred in the Masonic Cemetery in Wedowee. “Colonel” was a popular title of respect given lawyers in the late nineteenth century; it had nothing to do with any previous service as a commissioned military officer.
