Wm. H. Smith appeared before me this January 26th, and on his oath, says: He is a resident of Randolph County, Alabama; was a member of the Legislature of Alabama in 1855, '56, '57, and '58, and was a Douglas elector in Alabama in 1860; has understood that the rebels were hunting men down with dogs; hears also that two women had been torn by dogs. On his way to Corinth, heard that a man named Kennedy, who has two sons in the Union army, was taken and hung by Roddey's men charged with having visited his sons. They gave a negro a plug of tobacco to bury the corpse. Jan. 18th, having secured a pilot, met with Messrs. Starkey and Branefield in Itawamba County, Miss, at the residence of Starkey; while there were surprised by cavalry; Starkey ran was fired on four times and escaped; cavalry went to the house of Mr. Steadman, a representative in the Legislature, and a Union man; rode him on a rail and gave him his choice to remain silent on the Union question or be hung he chose the latter course. Eight hundred cavalry came into Randolph County to hang him, (Smith,) assigning as a reason for his course that he had made a speech against the conscript law. WM. H. SMITH.
