Randolph County AlArchives News.....Three Large Sawmills mean Big Business for Randolph County January 24, 1923 ************************************************ Copyright. There are three large sawmills operating in the county. The pay rolls of these mills alone make a perceptible difference in the volume of money in circulation. In addition to this most of the "peckerwood" mills are operating full time. The Bell Lumber company, with a mill situated near Wedowee, whose output is already large, will soon be cutting three or four times as much timber as at present. This company has constructed a road from their mill to Cragford, on the A. B. and A. railroad, crossing the Tallapoosa River at Burrows ferry, that being the nearest shipping point. A big ferry will be put in to accommodate the heavy lumber trucks which will be used to haul the lumber. This ferry will be just above where the Alabama Power company is said to be already preparing to build one of its big dams, known as the Mitchell dam. At present most of the output of this mill is being hauled to Roanoke and shipped over the A. B. and A. railroad. Bankers and other businessmen are unanimous, saying that the farmer of this section is 50 per cent, better off than a year ago, many having paid all or a part of their all debts. It is freely stated that one ignorant of the material facts stated above, might know by looking into the faces of the farmers, the frown of gloom and despondence of a year or two ago having been wiped away, leaving instead a "blooming" smile omen of returning prosperity.
