The bank president, Leon Phillips, said the loss would not be known until small vaults inside the main vault could be checked. He said bank officials were waiting for the arrival of FBI agents before going into the vault. Phillips said the burglars got into the building through the rear and tore down a wooden wall leading into the bank offices. Drawing a curtain over the front window, the bank president said, the burglars blew the front door off the main vault located in the front of the bank. Without the drawn curtain, he said they could have been seen from the street. A light burning above the vault was still on when the burglary was discovered this morning, Phillips added. Wadley is a small community mile west of Roanoke in Randolph County.
