Randolph County Coroner William V. Cockrell said the body was found five miles south of the Wedowee and Lineville Ferry. He said all signs point to homicide and robbery. The man apparently had been struck on the head, robbed and thrown in the river, said the coroner. He said an autopsy showed the man had been dead about a month. Fisherman Finder Acie Mitchell, 32-year-old fisherman of Lineville, found the body in a drift while fishing. He became so unnerved he ran four miles before he could find means of spreading the information. Description Made The coroner described the man as being more than six feet tall, approximately 175 pounds in weight, scantily clad in blue sharkskin pants, blue striped shorts and a white T shirt, and wearing a neat pair of Elton slippers, completely capped, size 10. He said the man was slightly bald, iron-gray haired, and missing a joint on the little finger of the right hand. The coroner added there was a small, three-bladed pocketknife in one of the pockets. He said both front pockets of the trousers appeared to have been emptied of any belongings. BODY IDENTIFIED Since the original story was written, relatives have identified the body as that of Joseph Scott Waits, of Rt. 1, Heflin. Mr. Waits, who was 46 years of age, is survived by a number of sons and daughters, all of Heflin, Rt. 1: Mrs. Audrey Gay, Mrs. Barbara Lumpkin, Mrs. Luke Johnson, Bobby Ann Waits, Evelyn Joice Waits, and Harold and Archie Waits. Coroner Cockrell is continuing his investigation to discover more of the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr. Waits. Additional Comments: Mr. Waits was buried in Calhoun County AL.
