Graveside services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, at Jordan’s Chapel Church, with Rev. Hurston Smith and Rev. Leron Murphy officiating. Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lula Mae Murphy of Newell; one daughter, Ms. Angela Murphy of Newell; one son, Richard Murphy of Newell; two sisters, Mrs. Fairy Haynes of Webb, Ala., and Mrs. Patsy Braden of Oxford; and two brothers, Conrad Murphy of Scottsboro and Henry Murphy of Marietta, Ga. Mr. Murphy served as commissioner of Randolph County’s District Two for 16 years. He was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, a veteran of World War II, and a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church of Montgomery, Sawyer Lodge No. 93, F&AM and the American Legion. He was an active member of Lanett First Baptist Church and Lanett Kiwanis Club. Mr. Gunn was an avid gardener. James (Wadley councilman) (WADLEY) Wadley Town Council member Willie B. James, 79, of Wadley died early Thursday morning, June 3, 1993. Funeral services for Mr. James were Monday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with Rev. Cornelius Reese officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Mr. James was born Dec. 3, 1915, in Chambers County, son of the late Mrs. Vera Mae James. He was a retired railroad employee who was elected to the Wadley Town Council in 1988 and served until his death. He joined Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at an early age and served as chairman of the church’s deacons board. Quattlebaum Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements __________ Crawford Clift Haynes (WOODLAND) Crawford Clift Haynes, 85, well-known Randolph County educator and lifelong community and civic leader, died Sunday, June 20, 1993, at his home in Woodland after an extended illness. A member of one of the county’s pioneer families, Mr. Haynes was born in Graham on Sept. 25, 1907, the oldest child of Dr. and Mrs. Richard Crawford Haynes. Two brothers, Julian Baxter and William Gordon, and a sister, Anna Elizabeth, preceded him in death. Crawford Haynes was a graduate of Bowdon College and Auburn University, and was a teacher in the Randolph County school system for 41 years. He started his career as a teacher at Bethel School in 1927 and later taught at the Friendship and Graham schools. He served as principal of Swagg School and Wedowee Grammar School before moving to Woodland High School as principal in 1939. After his retirement in 1968, he pursued varied interests, including farming and raising cattle. As a young man, Mr. Haynes was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at Graham. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church at Woodland during his last 54 years, many of which he spent as a Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of the Randolph County Historical Society. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mrs. Gulema Harrod Haynes; five children, Lenda Haynes McCain of Panama City, Fla., Eloise Haynes Rice of Anniston, Ralph Crawford Haynes of Atlanta, Ga., Roberta Haynes Paul of Birmingham and Rosalie Haynes of Washington, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and two nephews.
