David Ho[l]mes officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens. Mrs. Kirby died Friday, Oct. 1, at Randolph County Hospital. A lifelong resident of Randolph County, Mrs. Kirby was born February 12, 1927, in Chambers County, daughter of Prince and Eucal Barfield Chappell. She was a housewife and was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Kirby. Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Kirby of Roanoke; her mother, Mrs. Eucal Chappell; four sisters, Mrs. Lucille Shiflett of Woodland, Mrs. Sara Harvey and Mrs. Janell Sheppard of Roanoke and Mrs. Betty Bailey of Atlanta; and two brothers, Bobby Chappell of LaFayette and Howard Chappell of Rock Mills. Services for Hugh Nolen, 62, of Newnan, Ga., were Friday, Oct. 1, 1993, at 2 p.m. EDT at the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home, with Revs. Melvin Payne, Tommy Gray and David Cochran officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens, Roanoke, at 3 p.m. CDT. Mr. Nolen died Wednesday, Sept. 29, at his residence on Sheppard Drive in Newnan. Born Dec. 6, 1930, Mr. Nolen was a native of Randolph County. He was manager of Rutledge Center, Newnan-Coweta Association for Retarded Citizens. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and was postmaster of Newnan. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Mr. Nolen is survived by his wife, Joyce Nolen of Newnan; two daughters, Mrs. Lee Ann Hubbell and Mrs. Pam Barnes of Newnan; one son, Doyle Nolen of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Lawrence Nolen of Opp and Doyle Nolen of Jacksonville; three sisters, Mrs. Melvaline Knight and Mrs. LeMerle Williams of Anniston and Mrs. Ann Parker of Auburn; and six grandchildren, Brian Barnes, Rhonda Barnes, Meghan Hubbell, Whitney Hubbell, Zachary Nolen and Kyle Nolen. George Alfred “Pete” French, 80, of Orangeburg, S.C. died Friday, Oct. 1, 1993, at the Edisto Convalescent Center in Orangeburg after an extended illness. Daisy Rushing, 80, of LaGrange, Ga., died Monday, Oct. 4, 1993, at 4:20 p.m. at her daughter’s residence in LaGrange after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Rushing was born in Randolph County on August 19, 1913, daughter of the late Polk and Corrine Winkles Freeman. She had lived in LaGrange for the past 59 years. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, LaGrange. Funeral services will be at Highway Congregational Methodist Church in Randolph County on Thursday, Oct. 7, [at] 2 p.m. (Alabama time), with Rev. Lamar E. Womack and Rev. Woodrow Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Rushing is survived by her husband, Jim T. Mr. Dunaway had lived in Montgomery and in Opelika, where he was a member of Providence Baptist Church. He was retired from Alabama Power Company. His wife, Mrs. Grace Thompson Dunaway of Beauregard, survives him. Other survivors, living in various places in central Alabama, are three daughters, Wanda Willis, Denise Cotter and Jenny Dunson; four grandchildren; and his brother Jack and sister Vickie. Tomblin (WADLEY) Claude W. Tomblin, 86, of Wadley, a native of Pickens County, Ga., died Monday, Oct. 18, 1993, at his residence. [Mr.] Tomblin was a former mayor of Wadley, a former council member, a former Kiwanis Club president, Shriner and a deacon at Wadley First Baptist Church. He was also the owner of Beaver Creek Byproducts for at least 25 years. Mr. Yates was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Randolph County, son of the late Lester and Edna Daniel Yates. He was retired from Bremen-Bowdon Investment Co. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church and was a life-long resident of this area. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and had retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Nyla Hardy Walters; three sons, David Walters of LaGrange, Ron Walters of Fairfax and Donald Walters II of Roanoke; two daughters, Dana Greene of Opelika and Dee Dee Walters of Five Points; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Raymond S. A lifelong resident of Roanoke, Mr. Noles was born April 19, 1919, son of John M. and Naomie Noles. He was a retail grocery store owner for many years in Roanoke. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the deacon board. Survivors include five grandchildren, Roy Whaley, Salley Reaves, Patricia Lewis and Christopher Reaves, all of Roanoke, and Cathy Newman of Penton; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Thursday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m. EDT at the Seventh Day Adventist Church, Carrollton, Ga., with Elder Jack Dubosque and Elder Dan Whitlow officiating. Burial will follow in the family cemetery, Temple Farms, Woodland. Mr. Temple is survived by his father, Van Temple Sr. of Woodland; three sisters, Mrs. J. Lamar Henry of Roanoke, Mrs. Bill Bolton of Collegedale, Tenn., and Mrs. Greg Dendinger of Wadley; two brothers, Van A. Temple Jr. of Atlanta and John C. Mr. Temple was a native of Knoxville, Tenn., and had lived in Atlanta for a number of years. He was a doorman for the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at Buckhead, Ga., and was a member of the Atlanta Belveders Seventh Day Adventist Church. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Barbara Jones Temple. Mr. Temple will lie in state at Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee, and the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. CDT Wednesday, Oct. 27. The body was cremated. Mr. Wiggins was born in Randolph County Oct. 1, 1930, son of the late E. P. and Annie Zora Nixon Wiggins. Billy Ed was a lifelong resident of this area and was a pulpwooder. Mr. Smith was born in Randolph County Oct. 22, 1930, son of James Leonard and Gladys Butler Smith. Harold was a lifelong resident of this area and was a retired employee of General Motors. His wife, Elizabeth Hester, and a son, William Wallace Hester, preceded him in death. He was an army veteran of WWII, a member of Friendship First Christian Church and had worked as a heavy equipment operator. The Revs. Earl Ballard, Don Fuller and Walter Albritton officiated. Mr. Bennett, who died Wednesday, Oct. 20, at Lee Manor in Opelika, was born Jan. 29, 1896, in Randolph County. A former resident of Roanoke, Mr. Bennett had lived in Opelika for 54 years. He had served as a justice of the peace in Lee County, was a charter member of the Alabama State Troopers, a member of Masonic Lodge 454 F&AM of Opelika, a Shriner, a life member of the Lions Club of Opelika and a member of First United Methodist Church, Opelika. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Harvey Bennett. Survivors include two sons, Luther A. Bennett Jr. of Opelika and Thomas Vann Bennett of Lithonia, Ga.; two daughters, Loma B. Mayfield of Opelika and Christine B. Johnson of Maitland, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
