Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 1, at Roanoke First Baptist Church with Dr. Doug Turner officiating. Burial was in Cedarwood City Cemetery, Roanoke. Mrs. Gilliland was a native of Troup County, Ga. She had lived in Atlanta for the past nine months. A resident of Roanoke for more than 60 years, she was a teacher at Knight-Enloe and Handley Elementary schools for more than 33 years. She was selected as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1972. During her life in Roanoke, she was active in the First Baptist Church, serving as church clerk, primary department superintendent, WMU director and Baptist Women’s president. She was a member of the Roanoke Literary Club, the Roanoke Music Club and the American Legion Auxiliary and served on board of directors of the American Red Cross. As a hospital volunteer, she was a Grey Lady and later a Hospital Auxiliary Pink Lady, and was recognized in 1990 for 1500 hours of hospital volunteer work. Survivors include three daughters, Sylvia Chandler of Decatur, Ga., Kay Stevenson Hart of Weeley, England, and Virginia Coleman of Tuscaloosa; six grandchildren, Joseph B. Chandler III, Elizabeth G. Chandler, Jed Stevenson, and Thomas W. Coleman, Mary Caroline Coleman and John W. Coleman III, and by three great-grandchildren; one sister, Herschel J. (Mrs. John E.) Palmer of LaGrange, Ga. Mrs. Gilliland was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jefferson “Tommy” Gilliland, a former mayor of Roanoke. Pallbearers were Jim Robinson, Frank Phillips, Ralph Wilder, Tommy Hendon, Jerrell Hodges and John Landers. Honorary pallbearers were J. R. Huey, John Schuessler and Cecil Brown. Burial was in Rehope Cemetery. The Rev. H. L. Jones officiated Mr. Howell, who died Monday, June 5, at his residence, was born Nov. 7, 1923, in Chambers County. Mr. Howell was a member of Rehope Baptist Church, Five Points, a veteran of World War II, a graduate of Chambers County Training School, LaFayette, and a member of Shawmut Lodge 349A. He was retired from West Point Pepperell. His mother, Mrs. Mamie Ruth Howell, preceded him in death. Survivors include his father, Jessie Will Howell of Lanett; three sons, Larry W. Howell of Miami, Fla., Willie Bennett Howell of Forkland and Dr. Charles D. Howell of Baltimore, Md.; four daughters, Lucille Barnes of Atlanta, Ga., Jessica Turner of Mesa, Ariz., Vickie J. Nancy Evelyn Ward, 92, of Bowdon, Ga., died Wednesday, June 7, 1995, at Bowdon Area Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Ward was born in Randolph County[,] Ala., on June 18, 1902, daughter of the late John Henry and Etta Heaton Johnson. She was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Bethlehem Campground United Methodist Church at Graham and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Alfred Ward Sr., on Nov. 15, 1990. Survivors include a son, Alfred Ward of Douglasville, Ga.; two daughters, Mrs. Louise Prince of Roanoke and Mrs. Shirleen Meigs of Bowdon; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Ora Akin of Snellville, Ga. Louie Olds officiating. Mr. Bassett died Sunday, June 11, at his daughter’s home. A Randolph County native, Mr. Bassett was born Feb. 21, 1906, son of Jack and Ponne Workman Bassett. He was a member of Rock Mills Baptist Church and had worked as a salesman with Mutual Savings Insurance Company. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Johnson of Roanoke and Virginia Crabb of Watsonville, Calif.; two sons, Ralph Bassett of Oxford and Bobby Baggett [sic?] of Decaturville, Tenn.; two sisters, Maggie Parks and Mildred Valentini, both of Lakeland, Fla.; ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Mr. Akins, a native of Randolph County, worked with Douglas Lomason of Carrollton, Ga., as a press operator, and was a member of the volunteer fire department of Morrison’s Crossroads. Survivors include his wife, Julie Akins of Heflin; his parents, Herman and Patty Akins of Heflin; one sister, Sherry A. Hallmark of Heflin; one brother, Timothy “Yogi” Akins of Heflin; his grandfather, Offie Akins of Graham; and one niece and one nephew. A Randolph County native, Mr. Hill was born July 28, 1928, son of H. O. and Emma Sheppard Hill. He was a self-employed building contractor and a member of Southside Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Richardson Hill of Roanoke; two daughters, Brenda Hill and Malia Hill, both of Anniston; a son, Terry Hill and daughter-in-law, Linda Hill of Ashland; three sisters, Anna Satterwhite and Jeanell Glass of Roanoke and Vena Holloway of LaGrange, Ga.; two brothers, Leo Hill and James Hill, both of Rock Mills; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at Wedowee First United Methodist Church, the Rev. Tom Roberts officiating. Burial was in the Wedowee City Cemetery. Mrs. Burns was a native and lifelong resident of Randolph County, born May 16, 1921, to John and Mollie Tomlinson Gross. She was a homemaker and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wedowee, Knight Circle of Methodist Women, Garden Club, Bible study group and Keenagers Group. Her husband, Judge Joe T. Burns, preceded her in death. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Jane B. Johnson of Wedowee; three sons, Joe T. Ms. Enge was a teacher for the Dekalb County school system for 30 years. She had been retired three years. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Doris Needham of Huntsville and Ms. Erbis Hackett af [sic] Atlanta; two nephews, Tom Moran of New York City and John Needham of Birmingham; one neice [sic], Mrs. Lisa Marshall of Huntsville. Mrs. Lipham is survived by one daughter, Mevlee L. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, and a daughter, Marilyn Bailey. Mr. Heard is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Dewey J. (Hautence) Noles of Lake City, Ga., and Mrs. Carolyn Smith of Roanoke; three sons, Bobby Jack Heard, Jathan Heard and Tommy Heard, all of Woodland; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Miss Rice was born in Randolph County on April 3, 1909. She was a member of LaFayette Heights Baptist Church and was retired from Avondale Mills in LaFayette after 45 years of service. Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mrs. Ray Rice of LaGrange, Ga.; niece, Marilyn Maudine White of Opelika; nephew, Melvin (Jack) Tidwell of Roanoke; [and] other nieces and nephews. Mr. Lindley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Evis Lindley of Wedowee; two daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Rollins of Anniston and Mrs. Patricia Albright of Newell; two sons, Jerry W. Lindley and Eddie Lindley of Wedowee; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs. Morine Bolt and Mrs. Vera Mitchell of Wedowee, Mrs. Adell Pyle of Anniston and Mrs. Estelle Ledbetter of Oxford. Mrs. Bradfield had been in healthcare for many years as a registered nurse and also was the RN for Dr. McCollough’s practice. A native of Randolph County, she was born Sept. 12, 1907. She was a member of Shawmut First Baptist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth B. Grant of Lanett; three sisters, Annie Lois McCollough of Valley, Laverne Burdette of Roanoke and Pauline Wortham of Surrency, Ga.; two brothers, James Halsey and Ray Halsey of Roanoke; and two grandchildren. He was a lifelong resident of this area, a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at Graham, and a retired employee of Bremen-Bowdon Investment Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Johnson Saxon, Dec. 29, 1994. T. Janney and the Rev. Dr. Charles Hawkins officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens. Mrs. Kingren died Friday, June 23, at Brookwood Medical Center in Birmingham. A resident of Roanoke for the past 18 years, Mrs. Kingren was a Randolph County native, born Nov. 17, 1929, daughter of James Alford and Annie Clark Jones. She and her husband had lived in Miami, Fla., for 24 years before returning to Roanoke. Mrs. Kingren was a homemaker and a member of Faith Baptist Church and a local garden club. Survivors include her husband, Carl Kingren of Roanoke; one daughter, Katherine A. Kingren-Hawkins of Louisville, Ky.; one son, J. Fred Kingren of Birmingham; and one granddaughter, Elisabeth Ann Kingren-Hawkins. Pallbearers were Gene Sheppard, S. G. Patterson, Frank Royston, Harvey Clark, Raymond Howard Lane and Herbert Clark. David Holmes officiating. Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens. Mrs. Towler died Saturday, June 24, at Randolph County Hospital in Roanoke. A Rock Mills resident most of her life, Mrs. Towler was a Heard County, Ga., native, born Oct. 28, 1912, daughter of John Hood and Margie Barton Sanders. She was a member of Rock Mills United Methodist Church and had retired from Wehadkee Yarn Mills. She is survived by a brother, Wallace Sanders of Roanoke, and several nieces and nephews. A Roanoke native, Mr. White was born Sept. 6, 1943, son of Horace Eugene White, Sr., and Irma Rue Brown White. He was a member of Rock Mills Baptist Church and had worked for the Milliken Live Oak plant for 36 years. Randall Ingram officiating. Burial was in Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Woodland. Mr. Traylor died Saturday, June 24, at his residence. A native of Woodland, he had lived in Clay County for the past 39 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Ashland, where he was a deacon emeritus. He received his B.S. from the University of Alabama and his M.S. and A.A. from Auburn University. He was a retired principal from Clay County High School and had also served as principal in Wadley and in West Point, Ga., during his 43 years as an educator. Survivors include his wife, Opal Green Traylor, son Kermit C. Traylor Jr., daughter-in-law Ann Radney Traylor, and grandchildren Christopher, Shaun and Nancy Traylor, all of Ashland; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. H. C. Traylor of Forest Park, Ga., and Mrs. Elmo Traylor of Childersburg; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. White was born in Randolph County, Ala., on June 10, 1908. A longtime resident of Cusseta, she was a homemaker and a member of Osanippa Baptist Church in Cusseta. She had been in declining health for the past six months. Survivors include two daughters, Betty Carlisle of Pensacola, Fla., and Faye Morfield of Cusseta; seven sons, Charlie Tittle and Olen Tittle of Lanett, James W. (Tony) Tittle of Pensacola, Bobby Tittle of Livingston, Gene Tittle of Bethel, Alaska, Roy Tittle of Valley and Joe Tittle of Cusseta; one brother, Curtis Nix of LaFayette; four sisters, Bernice Fetner and Gladys Nolen of Roanoke, Willie Jo Newton of Lanett and Millierea Goodwin of Valley; and 24 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Timothy Leon “Tim” Webb, 44, of Holly Springs, Miss., formerly of Roanoke, were Sunday, June 25, 1995, at 3 p.m. at Lowell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bo Lloyd officiating. Burial was at Cedarwood Cemetery. Mr. Webb died suddenly in Holly Springs on Wednesday, June 21. A former resident of Miami, Fla., Mr. Webb was a Roanoke native, born Sept. 28, 1950, son of Wilton Leon and Sue Fisher Webb. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Key Club and Theta Chi fraternity. Mr. Webb worked as the golf course superintendent for Kirkwood National Golf Club. Watts, 87, of Roanoke died Tuesday, June 20, 1995, at University of Alabama Medical Center, Birmingham. Mr. Watts was born in Roanoke, Randolph County, Ala., son of the late Willie and Sallie Fannie Hill Watts. Both parents and all his brothers preceded him in death. He was a member of Rocky Mount Methodist Church, Broughton community, an honorably discharged veteran of World War II, and a retired employee of the Alabama State Highway Department. Mr. Gosdin was born in Randolph County, Ala., Dec. 8, 1923, son of Henry Marshall Gosdin of Bowdon [sic - editing error]; two daughters, Brenda Sue Nelson of Ranburne, Ala., and Barbara Ann Wiggins of Bowdon; nine grandchildren and three great- grandchildren; his father, Henry Marshall Gosdin of Douglasville, Ga.; and three sisters, Glemer Cavender of Bowdon, Christine Stewman of Douglasville and Shirley Shartzer of Bowdon. Mr. Gosdin was preceded in death by a daughter, Martha Jane Gosdin, 1954, and two sisters, Betty Jean Yates and Faye Lyett Gosdin. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 28, at 2 p.m. EDT from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church (Highway 5) with the Rev. W. M. Wiggins and the Rev. Roy Wysner officiating. She was a homemaker and a member of Bethany Lime Christian Church, and was the widow of Hubert Gay Mathews.
