Sallie Cofield Carroll, 92, a resident of Florence Hand Home, LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, June 25, 1997, at Florence Hand Home after a lengthy illness.    Mrs. Carroll was born in Randolph County, Ala., on Dec. 23, 1904, daughter of Houston and Almeedie Traylor Cofield.  She was retired from Callaway Mills Company, had lived in LaGrange for the past 67 years, and was a member of Mount Calvary Baptist Church.    The funeral was at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, at 11 a.m. Friday, June 27, the Rev. Olin White officiating.  Interment was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange.    Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Hart of LaGrange; two sons, Lee S. Carroll of Gainesville, Ga., and Herman V. Carroll of Bossier City, La.; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.    Preceding Mrs. Carroll in death were her husband, Herman B. Carroll, and adaughter, Mrs. Dorothy Mitchell.    Arrangements were by Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home, LaGrange. __________ Mary Nell Pool    (VALLEY) Mary Nell Pool, 76, of Valley died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at Lanier Memorial Hospital.    Mrs. Pool was born May 16, 1921, in Tallapoosa County.  She retired in 1985 from West Point Pepperell's Shawmut Mill after 45 years of service with the county [company?].  She was a member of Plant City Baptist Church.    She is survived by her husband, W. F. Pool of Valley; four daughters, Jackie Sand of Valley, Cleo Boothe of Chantilly, Va., Brenda Moore of Wedowee and Kathy Hughey of Lanett; three sons, Randy Pool, Tim Pool and Kevin Pool of Wedowee; two sisters, Robina Reese and Nadine Arnett of Austell, Ga.; three brothers, Lloyd Dabbs, Baynard Dabbs and James Dabbs of Lanett; 25 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a son, Steve Pool, a brother, George Dabbs, and a grandson, Brandon Bozeman.    Funeral services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley on Monday, June 30, at 4 p.m., with burial in Resthaven Cemetery.  The Rev. Amie Holloway Pool, 85, of Douglasville, Ga., formerly of Randolph County, died in Douglas General Hospital on Saturday, June 28, 1997.    Mrs. Pool is survived by one daughter, Shelby Lively of Douglasville; two sons, Clentis Pool of Summerville, Ga., and Gleason Pool of Atlanta; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Duelalar Payne of Wedowee and Lonnie B. Bowen of Cusseta; one brother, Hollis Holloway of Wedowee; and seven great-grandchildren.    Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with Bro. Paul Head    (HOGANSVILLE, Ga.) J. Paul Head, 92, of Hogansville, Ga., died Saturday, June 28, 1997, at Newnan Hospital.    The funeral service was conducted Monday afternoon, June 30, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville.  Elder Roy Speir officiated, and interment was in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville.    Pallbearers were Huell Stephens, Mark Puckett, Tony Chambers, Kenneth Speir, Chuck Adams and Francis Driessens.    Mr. Head was born July 5, 1904, in Randolph County, Ala., son of the late William and Molly Pittman Head.  He had lived in Hogansville since 1944 and was a member of Emmaus Primitive Baptist Church.  He retired as a shift supervisor after 22 years of service at Uniroyal Inc.    Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frances Thomaston Head of Hogansville; one son, Reginald Head of Conyers, Ga.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.    It was the desire of the family that flowers and contributions in memory of Mr. Head be omitted.    Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home of Hogansville was in charge of arrangements. ______________________________________________________ The Randolph Leader July 9, 1997 ___________________ OBITUARIES: Fonzie "Bunk" Whitmore    (WOODLAND) Fonzie "Bunk" Whitmore, 66, of Woodland died Monday, July 7, 1997, in Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, Ga., after an extended illness.    Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 9, in Bethel East Baptist Church, with the Revs. Tony Morris and Cecil Halsey officiating.  Burial will follow in the adjoining cemetery.    Mr. Whitmore is survived by his wife, Shirley Whitmore of Woodland; three daughters, Bonnie Whitmore of Superior, Wis., Carolyn McCollum of Tyus, Ga., and Debbie Riggs of Ephesus, Ga.; three sons, Timmy Whitmore and Terry Whitmore or [of] Superior, Wis., and Steve Boswell of Cottonwood, Ala.; 14 grandchildren; five sisters, Mag Buchanan of North Carolina, Irene Nichols of Columbus, Ga., Elizabeth Hicks of LaGrange, Ga., Rachel Bethea of Opelika, and Lois Parker of Whitesburg, Ga.; and three brothers, Sherman Whitmore and H. V. Whitmore of Woodland and Alfred Whitmore of LaGrange, Ga.    Pallbearers will be nephews and grandchildren.    Mr. Whitmore was born in Randolph County on July 13, 1930, the son of Harvey V. Bell, 79, of Roanoke, died Friday, July 4, 1997, at Lakeshore Community Hospital, Dadeville.    Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 9, at 1 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church, Roanoke, with Bishop C. L. Wilkes and the Rev. James B. Jackson officiating.  Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.    Survivors include his wife, Zera Bell of Roanoke; six sons, Zebedee Bell of Hyattsville, Md., E. S. Bell Jr. of Washington, D.C., the Rev. Fred Albert Bell of Stone Mountain, Ga., and Abraham Bell, Elder Brady D. Cox, 84, of Lanett died Sunday, July 6, 1997, at Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.    Mr. Cox is survived by one sister, Mrs. M. M. Handley of Roanoke; one brother, J. T. Sarah Cameron and the Rev. Robert L. Mattie Prince, 84, of Conyers, Ga., formerly of LaGrange, Ga., died Friday, July 4, 1997, at her residence after a lengthy illness.    Mrs. Prince was born in Randolph County, Ala., on Jan. 22, 1913, daughter of James Truett and Anna Arrington Rowe.  She was a homemaker who lived in LaGrange from 1940 until 1986, when she moved to Conyers.  There she was a member of East Side Baptist Church.    The funeral service was at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home Chapel in LaGrange at 2 p.m. EDT on Monday, July 7, the Rev. Heflin Daniel and the Rev. James E. Ward officiating.  Interment was in Shadowlawn Cemetery, LaGrange.    Survivors include two daughters, Sara Nealey of Ellenwood, Ga., and Jeanette Gandy of Conyers; one son, Charlie F. Crawford    (VALLEY) William L. "Bill Joe" Crawford, 85, of Valley died Wednesday, July 2, 1997, at his residence.    Mr. Crawford was born Aug. 18, 1911, in Langdale.  He was a 50-year club member for West Point Stevens and was retired from Langdale Mill.  He was a lifelong member of Langdale United Methodist Church, where he also served on the official board and was a longtime member of the Draper Class, a member of the Langdale 21 Club, and a member of the Alabama Home Guard during World War II.    Survivors include his wife, Elsie Manley Crawford; a daughter, Ann C. Hodges of Valley; a sister, Gladys C. Walton Beach, Fla.    A native of Randolph County and resident of Roanoke until recently, she was born April 18, 1909, daughter of Charles Amos and Florence Holliday.  She was a retired store manager from Goodwill Industries in Birmingham, a member of Roanoke First United Methodist Church, Homemakers Club and AARP.  She also was a "Suzy," as member of an organization for Methodist minister' wives.  She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Herman E. Weston, Sr.    Survivors include one daughter, Florence "Lala" Adams of Ft. Walton, Fla.; two sons, Herman E. "Sonny" Weston, Jr. of Sun City Center, Fla., and Paul H. Weston of Ft. Gibson, Okla.; two sisters, Rena Bramlett of Wilson, N.C., and Melba Williams of Sims, N.C.; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.    Pallbearers were grandsons, David Adams, Lyman Adams Jr., Michael Adams, Daniel Hawley, Marc Weston and James Wilson, and special friends, Jim Waters, Jason Roysdon, Josh Roysdon and Chris Roysdon.    Honorary pallbearers were Julian Lowe, Sam Wylie, Dr. Gordon Ussery, Jack Irvin, Jerry Cotney, Tommy Hill, J. Johnny Bishop officiating.  Burial followed at the church cemetery.    Mrs. Knight is survived by two daughters, Aurelia Gilley and Patricia Perkins of Contonment, Fla.; a brother, Carey Rollins of Woodland; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.    Mrs. Knight was a native of Randolph County, born Jan. 1, 1905, daughter of Elisha and Mollie Evans Rollins.  She was a member of First Baptist Church of Contonment and the widow of the Rev. Johnson, 52, was at 11 a.m. EDT Saturday, July 12, 1997, at Hanley-Shelton Chapel in Marietta, the Rev. L. E. Bailey officiating.  Interment was in Mountain View Cemetery.    Mr. Johnson was born on March 12, 1945, in Roanoke, Ala., son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Johnson, and he attended school in Roanoke.  He departed this life on July 9.    Survivors include five sisters, Geraldine Howard, Mary Lee Heard, Prestella Robinson, Augustine Anderson and Glenda Callaway; three brothers, John W. Cranford    (COLUMBUS, Ga.) Graveside services for Mavis B. Cranford, 71, of Columbus, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, were Saturday, July 19, 1997, at 11 a.m. from Randolph Memory Gardens with the Rev. Tom Taylor officiating.    Mrs. Cranford died Wednesday, July 16, at her home.    A Rock Mills native, she was born Jan. 31, 1926, daughter of David and Alma Manley Breed.  She was Baptist by faith, a retired cook for Consolidated Services and a member of Gallop Senior Center.    Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Cowan of Pine Mountain, Ga., Jodi Galloway of Birmingham and Royann Claridy of Conyers, Ga.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Sue Jones.    Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke, was in charge of local arrangements. __________ Ross Emanuel Ensminger    (PLEASANT HILL, Tenn.) Ross Emanuel Ensminger died June 20, 1997, in Pleasant Hill, where he and his wife, Margaret Goodhue Ensminger, lived in Uplands, a retirement center of the United Church of Christ.    He was a dedicated president of Southern Union College in Wadley when it was a home mission school supported by the Congregational Christian denomination. He became president in 1934, 12 years after the founding of the junior college, and served until 1946, when the growing educational needs of his own children caused him to take his family elsewhere.  Ross's retired educator father, Dr. Fred Ensminger, continued his support of the struggling college after his son left.    Well-educated and seminary-trained, Ross Ensminger devoted his life primarily to teaching and to a brief period of pastoral work.  For 26 years, he taught sociology at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill.    Mr. Ensminger married Margaret Goodhue 69 years ago, and they had four daughters.  Survivors include his wife and daughters, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, three sons-in-law[,] a daughter-in-law, and younger brother John, who lives in Birmingham. __________ James David Boyd    (BIRMINGHAM) James David Boyd, 73, of 457 Gene Reed Dr., Birmingham (35215) died July 14, 1997.    He was born and raised in Wedowee, served in the army during World War II, and spent nine months in a German POW camp.  He was retired from Wimberly & Thomas and from Alabama Tool & Supply.  Mr. Boyd was an active member of Huffman United Methodist Church, serving on the administration board, as senior activities leader, and as a Stephen Minister.  He was also very active in Boy Scouts, forming Troop #215 and serving as scoutmaster for 20 years.  He received the Silver Beaver Award for his work in scouting.  He attended Auburn University and the University of Georgia.    Survivors include his wife, Sarah O'Neal Boyd; sons, Ron Boyd of Decatur and Ken Boyd of Sylacauga; daughter, Pam Atchison of Birmingham; six grandchildren; sisters, Martha Waldrop of Roanoke, Lessie Kirby of West Point, Ga., Estelle Braswell of Wedowee and Lorene Watwood of Boaz.    Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 17, from Huffman United Methodist Church.  The Revs. Audie Hodges, Ron Shultz and Michael Stewart officiated.    Pallbearers were Eagle Scouts from Huffman Scout Troop #215.  Honorary pallbearers were senior adults from Huffman United Methodist Church.    The family requests that memorials be made to the church.    Ridout's Roebuck Chapel directed. ______________________________________________________ The Randolph Leader July 30, 1997 ___________________ OBITUARIES: Robert E. Brown    (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Robert E. Brown, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, at LaGrange Hospice after an illness of several months.    Mr. Brown was born in Randolph County, Ala., on Feb. 11, 1908, son of Jim and Mary Siggers Brown.  A resident of LaGrange since 1933, he was retired from Dixie Division of West Point Pepperell Mfg. Funeral services for Vera Cobb Wilson, 71, of Greenville, Ga., were Thursday, July 24, 1997, at 11 a.m. from Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev. S. T. Janney officiating.  Burial was at Rock Stand Christian Church Cemetery.    Mrs. Wilson died Monday, July 21, at Georgia Baptist Meriwether Hospital in Warm Springs.    A Crossville, DeKalb County, Ala., native, she was born Oct. 11, 1925, daughter of Freeman and Pearl Mason Cobb.  She was Baptist by faith and a homemaker.  Mrs. Wilson had been a LaGrange, Ga., resident and had also resided in Tuscaloosa several years.  She was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Lance Wilson.    Survivors include four daughters, Carol Jane Collom of Bessemer, Donna Kay Hooper of Chattanooga, Tenn., Cherle Lynn Wilson of LaGrange and Terri Bracci of Pittsburgh, Pa.; two sons, Curtis M. Wilson Jr. of Roanoke and David Paul Wilson of Bessemer; three sisters, Adilene Cottle and Shelby Treadwell of Roanoke and Marie Rashford of Waterloo, N.Y.; four brothers, Cecil Cobb and William "Boe" Cobb of Roanoke, Harold Cobb of LaGrange and Gary Kenneth "Pete" Cobb of Jacksonville; and six grandchildren.    Pallbearers were Derick Cobb, Lee Cobb, Kenneth Treadwell, Terry Cobb, David Treadwell and John Cobb.    Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke was in charge of arrangements. __________ Eddie B. Shears    (ROANOKE) The funeral of Eddie B. Shears, 67, of Roanoke, who died Thursday, July 24, 1997, at Randolph County Hospital, was at 2 p.m. Monday, July 28, from Bethel United Methodist Church in Roanoke.  John C. Greathouse and the Rev. Tommie Finley officiated.  Burial was in Skyview Memorial Gardens Cemetery at Welch.    Survivors include his wife, Irene Shears of Roanoke; two daughters, Ruby Nell Glenn of Franklin, Ga., and Diane Tigner of Roanoke; a stepson, Roy Lee Tate of Roanoke; a brother, Johnny Scales of Cleveland, Ohio; three sisters, Inez Caffey of Anniston, Mary Rachael Finney of Anniston and Rose Drake of Roanoke; a brother-in-law, Tommy Lee Walls of Roanoke; six grandchildren; and a special cousin W. Glenn Thomas "Buster" Creed, 78, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, July 23, 1997, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after a brief illness.    A native of Randolph County, Ala., Mr. Creed was born Aug. 27, 1918, son of the late Joseph M. and Effie Emiline Fowler Creed.  He was retired from Kex Plant of Callaway Mills Company after 35 years of service and had lived in LaGrange for the past 52 years.  He was a member of Calvary Family Worship Center, Mountville, Ga.    Funeral services were at Calvary Family Worship Center, Mountville, on Friday, July 25, at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Carl Knowles officiating.  Burial was in Restlawn Memory Gardens, LaGrange.    Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Hattie Lee Creed of LaGrange; one son, Buford L. Mrs. Charlie Will Lane, 89, of LaGrange, Ga., died July 24, 1997, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange, after a short illness.    She was born in Troup County, Ga., daughter of Charlie Frank and Ada Lee Prince Freeman, had lived in LaGrange all of her life, and was a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, Glenn, Ga.    Services for Mrs. Lane were at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27, the Revs. Charles G. Johnson and James Chesnut officiating.  Interment was in Bacon Level Cemetery, Chambers County, Ala.    Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Bonnie Nell Pritchett of Milford, Delaware, Mrs. Martha L. Bennett of Athens, Ga., Mrs. Tommie Lou Roper of Dover, Delaware, and Mrs. Lucile Pope of LaGrange; one son, Paul Alex Lane of LaGrange; three sisters, Mrs. Avis Jacobs of West Point, Ga., Mrs. Lucy Hodgkins of Springfield, Vermont, and Mrs. Dorothy Hornsby of LaGrange; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.    Funeral services were arranged and directed by Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home. __________ Donald A. Huey    (SEYMOUR, Ind.) Donald A. "Tony" Huey, 51, of Seymour died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 1997, at his home.  He had been ill a year.    He was a member of Seymour Church of Christ, was employed in the shipping and receiving department at Sonoco Products in North Vernon, and had lived in Jackson County for 30 years.    The funeral was at 2 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home, with Jeff Himmel officiating.  Burial was at Vallonia Cemetery.    Memorials may be made to Hospice of Memorial Hospital in Seymour or the Seymour Church of Christ Benevolence Fund.    Mr. Huey was born in Randolph County, Ala., Jan. 24, 1946, son of Doris Perry Huey of Woodland and the late Fred Davis Huey.  He married Joyce L. Sutton June 27, 1970, at Seymour.  She survives.    Also surviving are children, Lori Lee and Brian Scott Huey of Seymour, a brother, Charles Huey of Wedowee; and sisters, Janet McManus of Powder Springs, Ga., and Connie Albritton and Sharon Cole of Woodland. ______________________________________________________
