The Rev. Lathonia J. Wright officiated. Burial was in East Roanoke Cemetery. Mr. Hill died Tuesday, June 23, at Estes Nursing facility, Birmingham. He is survived by his wife, Annie Elizabeth Hill of Roanoke; two sons, the Rev. Alford Hill and Silus Leon Hill of Roanoke; two daughters, Ruby H. McGhee of Birmingham and Harriet Shears of Roanoke; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Jenny Hill; three sons, Sam Hill, Willie Hill and Luke Hill Jr.; and a daughter Judy Adamson. Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke, was in charge of arrangements. __________ Hazel Clardy Overton (FOLEY) Hazel Clardy Overton, 79, a native of Wadley and a resident of Foley died Monday, June 29, 1998, at her residence. Mrs. Overton attended Wadley High School and graduated from Montevallo in 1939 with a B.S. degree in education. Voted as one of Alabama's Gracious Ladies, she also served as past president of the Kennedy Book Club. She taught home economics in Reeltown and served as a substitute rural mail carrier. She was the daughter of the late Dr. A. J. Clardy and Bertha Estelle Hearn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Overton Sr. Survivors include two sons, Joseph Ralph "Shug" Overton, Gulf Shores, and Hugh W. Overton, Foley; two daughters, Rosemary Rowell of Pell City and Sharon McKoon, Smiths; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Baldwin Funeral Home in Gulf Shores. Graveside services will be Thursday, July 2, at City Cemetery in Wedowee. Parks (MONTGOMERY) Jennie S. Parks, 92, of Montgomery died Tuesday, June 23, 1998. She was a member of United Daughters of the Confederacy and Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her husband, Woodford H. Parks of Montgomery; one daughter, Jane P. Arrangements were by Leak Memory Chapel, Montgomery. __________ Billy Joe Clifton (PENDLETON, N.C.) Billy Joe Clifton, 69, died Friday, June 12, 1998, at his Pine Ridge residence in Pendleton, N.C. He was a native of Wedowee and son of the late Robert Lawton "Bob" and Ellone Yates Clifton. Mr. Clifton was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, retiring after 22 years of service. He served aboard the command ships USS Wright, USS Guam, USS Lewis and USS Lake Champlain, which picked up the first astronaut, John Glenn. Mr. Clifton is survived by one son, Casey L. Wilson of Severn, N.C.; two daughters, Sarah M. Sturgill of Severn and Cynthia E. Wilstead of Newport News, Va.; one sister, Bobbie Washington of Opelika; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Billy Joe Jr. Funeral services were held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Ellis family cemetery on Manning Road in Suffolk, Va. __________ Elvin Mark Slagle (MT. OLIVE) Funeral services for Elvin Mark Slagle, 73, of the Mt. Olive community near Roanoke were Monday, June 29, 1998, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Maynard McGinty officiating. Burial was at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Slagle died Friday, June 26, at his home. A lifelong Chambers County resident, Mr. Slagle was born Nov. 20, 1924, son of Joseph Winston and Carrie Clack Slagle. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Dollie Mae Slagle; one daughter, Wanda Slagle Cofield of Roanoke; one son, Ricky M. She was born Dec. 7, 1905, in Cleburne County, daughter of Joe and Cindy Lipham Allen. She was a homemaker, a member of Jordan's Chapel Church and a member of the Randolph County Home Demonstration Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Brady, and a son, Lawrence Brady. Survivors include three daughters, Edna Griffin of Anniston, Lottie Strain of Woodland and Colleen Bentley of Eastaboga; two sisters, Flora Gill and Novella Dye, both of Albany, Ga.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Owens (LAGRANGE, Ga.) The funeral service for Ben L. Owens, 88, of LaGrange, Ga., was Friday, July 3, 1998, at 10 a.m. EDT at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Chapel, LaGrange, with the Rev. Olin White officiating. Burial was at 12:30 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, Auburn. Mr. Owens died Wednesday, July 1, at West Georgia Medical Center, LaGrange. Born Oct. 18, 1909, in Chambers County to Sydney and Emma Robinson Owens. Mr. Owens was a retired college teacher and a former writer for the Valley Times-News in Lanett. He had lived in LaGrange for the past five years and was a former resident of Washington, D.C. Mr. Owens was a Methodist. He is survived by four nieces and two nephews. Cowart, 84, of Carrollton, Ga., died early Wednesday morning, July 1, 1998, at Tanner Medical Center. He was born in Carroll County Oct. 13, 1913, son of the late J. T. "Joe" Cowart and Amanda Smith Cowart. Mr. Cowart retired from Barnes Freight Lines with 40 years of service. He was a director of Carroll EMC for 29 years, a former member of the Carrollton Lions Club and a member of Lowell United Methodist Church, where he had served as treasurer and chairman of the administrative board. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Imogene Folds Cowart, who died Jan. 19, 1993; five sisters, Gladys Baughtman, Susie Rooks Jones, Lillian Taylor, Beatrice Durrough and Ida Musick; four brothers, Luther Cowart, Guy Cowart, Jewel Cowart and Eugene Cowart; one grandchild and one great-grandchild. He is survived by five daughters, Monteen Miller of Carrollton, Jeraldine Walton and Maxine House of Douglasville, Ga., Wylene Bartlett of Wedowee and Charlene Moody of Covington, Ga.; two sisters, Opal McWhorter of Glenlock and Vera Pyron of Carrollton; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A resident of Randolph County, he was born May 15, 1909, in Chambers County, son of the late William Robert and Addie Frank Slaughter Slagle. He was the former owner of Slagle Grocery in Rock Mills. Mr. Slagle was a member and deacon of Antioch Congregational Christian Church. Funeral services were Thursday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at Seleeta Baptist Church, with burial in Bradford Cemetery, Goodwater. The Rev. Jeffrey Rosser officiated. Mr. Baggett was born Aug. 11, 1958, son of Willie Baggett Jr. and the late Darnetta Baggett. He was a line operator at Amoco Fabrics in Roanoke.
