A native of Randolph County, Mrs. Buchanon was born Feb. 11, 1916, daughter of the late Nealie Alice Arrington Davis and the late William Thomas Davis. She had retired from West Point Pepperell's Fairfax Mill after more than 28 years of service. She enjoyed working in her garden and growing flowers. She was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church in Randolph County. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Hubbard of Valley and Deidra McGill of Lanett; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Buchanon, and a daughter, Peggy Jean Buchanon. Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, with graveside services at 12:30 at Big Springs Cemetery. The Rev. Rusty Letson and the Rev. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Smith died Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Tuskegee following an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Randolph County, he was born May 13, 1921, son of Matthew Smith and Leo Daniel Smith. He was an Army veteran and Purple Heart recipient from World War II, a self-employed farmer, a member of the VFW and American Legion, and a member of Bethel East Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Smith of Woodland; two daughters, Maxcine Eason of Bowdon, Ga. and Cupidean Herren of Woodland; a son, Dannie Smith of Woodland; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her ex-husband, Allen Hester; father, Herbert Wilson; a brother Curtis Wilson; two sisters, Judy Carden and Brenda Harmon; and three grandchildren, Jarrett and Jane Garrett and Jordan Hester. Mr. Harrington died Saturday, Feb. 3, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Carroll County, Ga. Jay Harrington was born Aug. 12, 1982, in Carrollton, Ga. He graduated from Woodland High School, Class of 2000, and was attending Southern Union State Community College. He was a member of Sardis Baptist Church and a former member of the FFA, 4-H, Junior Cattlemen's Association, the Junior Limousine Association and the Woodland High School basketball team. He had been employed with Tanner Medical Center. Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Ronda and Jimmy Phillips of Bowdon, Ga.; father and stepmother, David and Louise Harrington of Woodland; grandparents Curtis and Maxine Stewart of Bowdon and Mary Harrington of Woodland; great-grandparents, Ina Geter and Lila Stewart of Bowdon; and one brother, Scot Harrington of Woodland. Mr. Fincher was born in Clay County on Sept. 29, 1923, son of the late Margaret Swann Fincher and the late Augost Eugene Fincher. He had retired from West Point Pepperell's Fairview Mill and had built several homes after he retired. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed the Lanett Senior Club. He was an active Mason and Shriner and a member of the Church of God. Survivors include three daughters, Wylene Wilerson of Lanett and Juanita Bates and Anne Freeman of LaGrange, Ga.; two sons, Jack Fincher of LaGrange and Mancel Fincher of Dresden, Tenn.; two sisters, Myra Nell Robinson and Peggy Sherman of Roanoke; two brothers, Howard Fincher of Gadsden and James W. Fincher of Anniston; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and one son, Edward E. Fincher. A lifelong resident of the area, he was born in Chambers County on Feb. 15, 1929, son of John Alonza Williams and Thelma Burdette Williams. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, had been employed as a line crew foreman with Alabama Power Company, and was a member of Antioch Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anita Kirby Williams, his parents, Alonza and Thelma Williams, and a brother, Eugene Williams. A Chambers County native and lifelong resident, Miss Newell was born Sept. 27, 1917, daughter of Robert Lee and Annie Holderfield Newell. She was a graduate of Five Points High School Class of 1935; a member of Bethel Baptist Church at Welch; and had worked as a bookkeeper with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Elbert R. Taylor, 92, of Phenix City died Thursday, Feb. 15, 2001, at Phenix Regional Hospital. Services were Friday, Feb. 16, at 9 a.m. EST at Summerville United Methodist Church in Phenix City with Dr. John Paul Thomas officiating. Burial followed at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery. Col. Taylor was born April 9, 1908, in Randolph county, the son of the late Vistula Ware Taylor and William Ellis Taylor. He graduated from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) in 1931. He served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in World War II and the Korean War. Col. Taylor was county engineer for Russell County for 18 years and was a member of Summerville United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Pinckard Bryan Taylor of Phenix City; one son, James S. Taylor of Stafford, Texas; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Col. Taylor was preceded in death by three brothers, James A. Taylor, Col. William Woodrow Taylor and Charles E. Taylor, and four sisters, Ruth Wallace, Myrtle Minter, Carolyn Carr and Lucille Lygren. Ms. Rutlin was the second of six children of the late B. J. and Verrmell Godwin Rutlin. Born and reared in Wedowee, she joined Union Chapel United Methodist Church at an early age, where she was active as a member of the Union Chapel Choir and was well known for her singing ability. Several years ago she became disabled due to a stroke and was later confined to Roanoke Health Care Center, where she actively and enthusiastically participated in all nursing home activities. In 2001, she won the title of Ms. Roanoke Health Care, an annual beauty pageant sponsored by the nursing home staff. Participants who win this competition go on to compete regionally and state-wide with other winners from extended care facilities. She was a member of Roanoke First United Methodist, Roanoke Garden Club and the Randolph County Historical Museum.
