Olds was a retired minister and had served as pastor of these Randolph County churches: Rock Mills First Baptist, Rocky Branch Baptist, Union Baptist and Fellowship Baptist. Harold Grant Kirby, 79, of Bowdon, GA, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, in Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, GA. He was born in Carroll County, GA, on Oct. 12, 1921, son of the late Dr. Ellis Grover and Lena Tomlinson Kirby. Mr. Kirby was a lifelong resident of the Bowdon area. He served in World War II and retired from the United States Air Force. He was a retired buyer for Southwire Company and was a Baptist by faith. He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert E. Kirby. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Norton Kirby of Bowdon; a son, Ellis G. She was preceded in death by one son, the late Marlon Benard of Randolph County; two brothers, Luther and Herbert Scales; and a sister, Catherine Heard. Ms. Benard was a certified cosmetologist and a community activist. She was instrumental in the election of several mayors and councilpersons in Detroit. After community riots Ms. Benard was a vocal and visible influence in the revitalization of her neighborhood. In later years she was a homemaker, caring for many of the neighborhood children. Claude Bennett officiating. Burial was at Concord Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Kent died Tuesday, Oct. 23, at LaFayette Nursing Home. He was born in Chambers County on June 6, 1922, son of John Tom and Della Mae Sanders Kent. He was Baptist by faith. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lonnie Kent and John Will Kent. Survivors include a sister, Flossie Stone of Lanett; three brothers, Paul Kent and Grover Kent of New Braunfels, Texas, and Jack Kent of Pinelas Park, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Lynn Lamb, Tony Meadors, Kevin Meadors and Stanley Bennett. Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke. __________ CORRECTION: In last week's Leader [Oct. 24, 2001], the obituary for Richard Albert Emery of Wedowee inadvertently omitted the listing of three grandchildren among the survivors.
