Clayton Scott, the Rev. Johnny Bishop and Chaplain Virginia Millett officiating. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Church of Christ Cemetery. Mr. Wilson died Monday, July 1, at his residence. Mr. Wilson was born in Whitfield County, Ga., on Sept. 16, 1929, son of the late Melton and Gertrude Gazaway Wilson. He was retired from Southern Railway after 17 years of service. He was president of Mr. Chill Company in Roanoke, where he engineered small refrigerators. He was a member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church, where he served as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee and taught Sunday School. Mr. Wilson was also a Wedowee City Councilman for 12 years. He is survived by his wife, Marvolene Stewart Wilson of Wedowee; two sons, Russell Wilson of Dalton, Ga., and Mike Fields of Woodland; one daughter, Sandra Cofield of Wedowee; three granddaughters; two sisters, Zelda Spearman of Sugar Valley, Ga., and Hilda Lau of Redwine Cove, Ga.; five aunts; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers will be Terry Graham, Vic Bailey, Horace Holliday, Jerry Brazeal, Donald Norton, Tony Messer, Mike Lau and Earl Rollins. The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home in Wedowee on Wednesday until one hour prior to services. Mr. Wilson will lie in state at the church for one hour beginning at 1 p.m. The family will accept flowers but also suggests that donations may be made to the Cancer Society, Chattahoochee Hospice or to the Rocky Branch Baptist Church Building Fund. Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee. __________ William Edward Brooks (ROANOKE) Services for William Edward "Bill" Brooks, 69, of Roanoke were Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Clifford DeLee officiating. Burial was at Lane's Chapel Cemetery. Mr. Brooks died Sunday, June 30, at his home. A Chambers County native, Mr. Brooks was born Dec. 4, 1932, son of Henry O. and Mettie Bryan Brooks. He was a Korean War Air Force veteran and was retired from Uniroyal in Opelika after 26 years. Survivors include his wife, Jacaline Brooks of Roanoke; six daughters, Robin Brown of Five Points, Kay Brooks of LaFayette, Tammy Ingram of Opelika, Shawn Mitchell and Cindy Harper of Roanoke and Kim Taylor of Birmingham; three brothers, Neal R. He was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church, was employed by Alan Meeks Service Station, and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Miss Lovvorn was a native of Randolph County, born Dec. 21, 1921, daughter of Iverson and Dessie Traylor Lovvorn. She was an Army veteran of World War II, having served on Saipan Island, and also was a retired nurse with McDill [sic] Air Force Base Hospital. She was the author of two books, NEWELL REMEMBERED and RED HAMLETT. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Wedowee. Miss Lovvorn is survived by one sister, Mrs. Katherine Coe of Wedowee; and three nephews, Gene Coe, John Coe and Tim Coe. Mr. Smith, born April 10, 1927, in Randolph County, Ala., was the son of the late Seab and Ida Cooper Smith. He had lived in LaGrange most of his life and was a retired owner of Smith T.V. Mrs. Baldwin was born in Randolph County on Dec. 31, 1904, daughter of the late Martha Jane Sherrer Mickle and William Mickle. She was a homemaker and was very active in West End Baptist Church, Valley, where she worked with the Missionary Society. Mrs. Baldwin is survived by two daughters, Louise B. Coleman and Marie B. May of Valley; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Baldwin. Mrs. Bice, born Oct. 7, 1928, in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of the late John and Bessie Lee Landers. Mrs. Bice was retired from Duracell with 15 years of service and was a member of Hilyer Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Sanford Alverson of LaGrange and Phillip Bice of Opelika; two sisters, Glenys Mann and LaMerle Mann, both of LaGrange; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He had also been a member of the Masonic Lodge. Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with military honors. Col. Gross died Thursday, July 4, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center in Anniston. A Randolph County native, Col. Gross was born Oct. 29, 1923, son of Millard Orbie and Oris Elizabeth Kirby Gross. He was a graduate of the University of Alabama and West Georgia College. He was an Army veteran of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of the VFW, Disabled American Veterans, the Retired Educators Officers Association, Kiwanis Club and Sons of Confederate Veterans. He served on the Board of Human Resources and was a member of the Randolph County Republican Committee. He was a member of the Randolph County Republican Committee [repeat]. He was a member of Rocky Branch Baptist Church, the Men's Brotherhood and was a Sunday School teacher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Awbrey Gross; a brother, Bill Gross; and a son, John Robert Gross. Although born and raised in Wadley, he spent his final years in the company of his many friends and family in San Francisco. He was a former member of the Roanoke City Board of Education, having served for a number of years. Dr. Minnifield remained active throughout his retirement.
