Sellers, 59, of Roanoke were Sunday, Sept. 29, at 2 p.m. at Randolph Memory Gardens, with the Revs. Roger Hammett and Jamie Taylor officiating. Mr. Sellers died Friday, Sept. 27, at Carraway Methodist Hospital in Birmingham. A Montgomery native, Mr. Sellers was born April 22, 1943, son of Sidney and Christie Lamb Sellers. He was a Vietnam Army veteran, a paramedic, and co-owner of Emergency Medical Transport. Survivors include his wife, Debbie Bradley Sellers; one daughter, Donna Neighbors, and one son, Brian Sellers, all of Roanoke; one sister, Elizabeth House of Rainer, Ala.; one brother, Curtis Sellers of Tuscaloosa; and three grandchildren. Pallbearers were Mike Potts, Bill Ford, Howard Bailey, Ron Cramer, Lewis Neighbors, Pete Mitchell, Byron Morrison and Ricky Daniel. Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke. __________ Juanita Doris Akin (GRAHAM) Services for Juanita Doris Akin, 74, of Graham were Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Darnell Teal and the Rev. James Galloway officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Akin died Friday, Sept. 27, at Redmond Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 2, 1927, in Cleburne County, Mrs. Akin was the daughter of the late Henry G. and Bessie Wiggins Yates. She was retired from her job as a seamstress at Bremen-Bowdon Investment Co. and a member of Antioch Baptist Church (Bowdon-Carrollton highway). She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyd L. Akin on June 2, 1977. Survivors include two sons, Alan Akin of Roopville, Ga., and Mike Akin of Bowdon, Ga.; one daughter, Peggy Matthews of Graham; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; two daughters-in-law and one son-in-law. Hairston, 90, of Roanoke died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at her residence. Services will be Wednesday, Oct. 2, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 519 Riley Street, Roanoke, with the Rev. Gilbert Staples officiating. Burial will be in Sweet Home Baptist Church Cemetery, Five Points. Survivors include a son, Rufus B. Williams Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a daughter Mrs. Jimmie Nell Staples-Thrift of New Orleans, La.; nine grandchildren; a special niece, Ms. Annie Hill of Roanoke; a goddaughter and caretaker, Ms. Francis Drake of Welch; 16 great- grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren. Minnie Lee Noland Hairston was born July 23, 1912, daughter of the late Freeman Noland and Evas Williams. Ms. Hairston was preceded in death by her first husband, the late Rufus Williams Sr., her second husband, the late Henry Hairston, and a son, William Hairston. Early in life, Ms. Hairston joined Sweet Home Baptist Church, Five Points, and later joined First Baptist Church, Roanoke, where she was a dutiful and loyal member. She served as president of the Missionary Society for 25 years and was also supervisor of the Youth and Matrons' Department. In honor of her many years of devoted service to First Baptist Church, a "Minnie Hairston Circle" was organized. She was also very active in the Senior Choir and Sunday school. She was also actively involved in the East Alabama Union District Baptist Association where she worked with the women's division and various youth departments. She was an active member of the "Old Ship of Zion," a benevolent gospel singing "caravan" that traveled to various area churches, singing and raising needed monies which were left with the host church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, in the Chapel of Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville, Ga. The Rev. Charlie Bolt will officiate. Interment will be in Potash Church of God Cemetery in Randolph County. Pallbearers will be Allen Shaw, Clinton Gaddy, Danny Hammett, Ricky Smith Jr., Steve Harrington, Moe Childers and Chad Swick. Mr. Shaw was born May 16, 1934, in Heard County, Ga., son of the late James Carlis Shaw and the late Lottie Hammond Shaw. He was a former resident of Troup County, Ga., and was a member of the Assembly of God. Survivors include two daughters, Vera Shaw of Roanoke and Darlene Rogers of Grantville; one son, Danny Joe Shaw of LaGrange; four sisters, Joyce Hammond of Duncan, S.C., Jeanette Bailey of LaGrange, Myrtle Crenshaw of Roanoke, and Frances Gaddy of Hogansville; three brothers, Floyd Shaw and Billy Shaw of LaGrange and J. Burial was in Clay County Memory Gardens. Mrs. Pitts died Thursday, Sept. 26, at her home. Mrs. Pitts was a native of Cleburne County and had lived most of her life in Randolph County. She was a homemaker and a Protestant. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Claudie Blair; her husband, Otis D. Pitts; and a brother, Shafford T. Blair. A graveside service with full military honors was held for retired Lt. Col. (Ret.) Joseph Leon McCarter, 83, on Friday, Sept. 27, 2002, at 1 p.m. at El Camino Memorial Park in El Cajon, Calif. Lt. Col. McCarter died Friday, Sept. 20, at Grossmont Hospital in LaMesa, Calif. Lt. Col. McCarter, born Jan. 22, 1919, in Randolph County, was the son of the late Lee and Connie Bonner McCarter. A graduate of Wadley High School, he joined the Army Air Corps and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He attained the rank of captain and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service as a weather reconnaissance pilot. Discharged from the service at war's end, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served until his retirement in 1965. He was then employed by San Diego College as a counselor and instructor until his retirement in 1984. Lt. Col. McCarter is survived by his son, Scott McCarter of El Cajon; his sister, Mary Reba Niver of Montgomery; three nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Winona Armstrong McCarter, and two brothers, Tom Luther McCarter and William Cary McCarter. __________ Albert Charlie Stewart (OXFORD) Services for Albert Charlie Stewart, 95, of Oxford were Thursday, Sept. 26, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Lakeview Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Starling officiating. Burial was in Forestlawn Gardens. Mr. Stewart died Monday, Sept. 23, at St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, Ga. Survivors include three children, Laverne S. Worth, and Lavoy C. Stewart of Columbus and Lawana Humphrey of Dearborn, Mich.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mr. Stewart was born in Randolph County. He was retired from farming and was a Star route mail carrier. He was a longtime member of Lakeview Baptist Church, and he held a lifetime membership in the Masonic Lodge. Preston Lester Story, 68, of Roanoke were Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at 2 p.m. at Lowell United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Todd Henderson, Gary Henderson and Ed Grooms officiating. Burial was at Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery. Rev. Story died Sunday, Oct. 6, at Randolph Medical Center. A native of Tallapoosa County, Rev. Story was born Nov. 20, 1933, son of Franklin and Alvie Carter Story. He was a member of Lowell United Methodist Church, United Methodist Lay Ministries and Emmanus Walk Ministries. He also served in the Marines during the Korean War. He was born on May 5, 1911, in Tallassee, the son of the late Edmond Allen Crumpton and the late Jettie Etna Hill Crumpton. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Douglasville, Ga., and was an agent and owner of Crumpton Insurance Agency in Roanoke. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Wallace Crumpton. A graveside service will be at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville at 3 p.m. Mrs. Toole died Monday, Oct. 14, at her residence. A Randolph County native, Mrs. Toole was born Sept. 26, 1934, daughter of Orion and Pearl Edwards Johnston. She was a member of Wedowee First Baptist Church, a loyal choir member, a Sunday school teacher for the children's classes and a past president of Wedowee Garden Club. Mrs. Toole was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey William Toole. Survivors include her husband, James W. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Jordan Nolen; a son, Harold Thomas "Buddy" Nolen; and a grandson, Johnny R. Nolen. Ms. Heard was born Aug. 12, 1912, daughter of the late William and Clara Poole. Ms. Heard was preceded in death by her husband, John Miller Heard (1987), and a sister, Fannie Mae Moody. She was a longstanding member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, where during her active years she served in the Missionary Society and Usher Board and taught Sunday School. Lillian Dunn Taylor, 98, of Fairfax, Va., died on Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002, at Fairfax Nursing Center. Mrs. Taylor was born in Morengo County in 1904 to Benjamin and Annie Dunn. She was a 1926 graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute, now Auburn University, where she was one of nine women students. While a schoolteacher, she married Emmet K. Taylor of Roanoke on Aug. 4, 1929. They came to the Roanoke area, eventually settling on Omaha Road to raise their family and to farm. Lillian was a member of Roanoke Christian Church, a charter member of Tomato Girls, founder of Lebanon Home Demonstration Club, and a long-time member of the Roanoke Garden Club. After the passing of her beloved husband of 59 years in 1988, she continued to live on the family farm. In the mid-'90s, she went to Annandale, Va., to live with her daughter and son- in-law, Sarah and David O'Connor. In November of 1995, she suffered a stroke and moved to Fairfax Nursing Center, where she was fondly called "Grandma" and told many stories of her life on the farm. In addition to her beloved husband, Mrs. Taylor was preceded in death by her brother, Lemuel "Jack"; three sisters, Berta, Azilee and Quida; and a grandson, Larry. She is survived by three daughters, Elizabeth Akins of Walden, Tenn., Mary Berta Brown of Arnold, Md., and Sarah O'Connor of Annandale; two sons, Emmett (Kirk) Taylor of Pisgah Forest, N.C. and Benjamin (David) Taylor of Yorktown, Va.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, O'Leta Patterson of Florence; and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
