OBITUARIES:

Waymon Bryon Richardson

   (OXFORD) Memorial services for Waymon Bryon Richardson, 67, of Oxford were
Saturday, June 28, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Mineral Springs Methodist Church Cemetery
in Lineville with Rev. James Duke officiating and Miller Funeral Home of Oxford
in charge.
   Mr. Richardson died Tuesday, June 24, at Baptist Montclair Medical Center in
Birmingham.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Patterson Richardson; two sons, Charles
Richardson of Wadley and John Richardson of LaFayette; a daughter, Jan
Richardson Ballard of Wadley; four stepchildren, James Shaddix of Lineville,
Patsy Dingler of Delta, and Nancy Hazel and Julia Shaddix, both of Oxford; two
brothers, Jack Richardson and Hugh Richardson, both of LaFayette; and four
grandchildren.
   Mr. Richardson, a Korean War and Vietnam War Air Force veteran, worked in the
furniture refinishing business many years before retiring.  He was a member of
Community Baptist Church in LaFayette.

Johnnie Mae Lawson Kimber

   (ANNISTON) Services for Johnnie Mae Lawson Kimber, 83, of Anniston were
Saturday, June 28, 2003, at noon at Haven United Methodist Church in Anniston
with the Rev. Dr. Randy B. Kelly officiating.  Burial was in Friendship Baptist
Cemetery in Wadley with Ervin Funeral Chapel of Anniston in charge.
   Mrs. Jones [sic] died Monday, June 23, at Regional Medical Center in
Anniston.
   Survivors include two sons, Charles Kimber of Tallahassee, Fla., and Theo Jr.
Kimber of Huntsville; two daughters, Anita Overton Smith of Detroit, Mich., and
Willie Mae Allen of Nashville, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren, and 43
great-grandchildren.
   Mrs. Kimber was preceded in death by her husband, Theo Kimber Sr.; and a son,
Larry Smithers.

R. V. Estes

   (CRAGFORD) Services for R. V. Estes, 78, of Cragford were Wednesday, June 25,
2003, at 2 p.m. at Clay County Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Tim Tipton and
Bruce Willis officiating.  Burial was in New Harmony Cemetery.
   Mr. Estes died Monday, June 23, at his home.
   Survivors include his wife, Margaret Estes; three daughters, Frances Garbath
of Alexander City and Judith Campbell and Diane Beck, both of Cragford; a
sister, Georgia Buchanan of Ashland; seven grandchildren and 14
great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bobby Garbath, Brandon Denney, James Lee, Chuck Sparks,
Keith Harry and Paul Harry.
   Mr. Estes, a Randolph County native, lived most of his life in Clay County. 
He was Baptist.  He had been a self-employed pulpwood producer and a
construction worker at R.L. Harris Dam before his retirement.

Carl Veal Sr.

   (DETROIT, Mich.) Carl Veal Sr., 72, of Detroit, Mich., died Thursday, June
19, 2003 at his residence.
   Graveside services were Friday, June 27, at 11 a.m. at Rehope Baptist Church
Cemetery, LaFayette, with Dr. H. L. Jones officiating.
   Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Georgia Mae Veal of Detroit; three sons, Carl
Veal Jr., David Jackson and Emmanuel Jackson of Detroit; three daughters, Ms.
Carlotta Veal, Ms. Barbara Robinson, and Ms. Yvetta Ivory of Detroit; one
brother, Arthur Veal of Rumulus, Mich.; two sisters, Mrs. Willie Mae Heard of
Columbus, Ga., and Ms. Dollie Winston of Roanoke; 15 grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren.
   Mr. Veal was born in Roanoke, on Nov. 16, 1930, son of the late Willie Heard
and Mary Ann Veal.  At a very young age, he joined Rehope Baptist Church,
LaFayette.  He attended Randolph County Training School in Roanoke and served in
the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1959.  After being honorably discharged, he was
employed as a welder at Bethlehem Steel for 30 years until his retirement in
1992.  He married Georgia Mae Sledge on Feb. 22, 1975.
   Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Rosa Mae Foster

   (ROANOKE) Rosa Mae Foster, 33, of Roanoke died Sunday, June 29, 2003 at
Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services will be Thursday, July 3, at 2 p.m. at Canaan Missionary Baptist
Church, Welch, with the Revs. Rodney K. Turner and Joe Cofield officiating. 
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
   Visitation and viewing will be Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. at Clark
Memorial Funeral Service.
   Ms. Foster was born July 17, 1969 in Roanoke, daughter of Ethel May Bailey
and the late Mack Earnest Foster.  She was baptized August 17, 1997 at Canaan
Missionary Baptist Church and remained a faithful member until her death.
   Survivors include her mother, Ethel Mae Bailey of Roanoke; a son, Marcus
Foster of Roanoke; a special friend, John Sutton of Roanoke; two brothers,
Michael Wood and Linden Bain Wood of Roanoke; five sisters, Carrie Ethel
Copeland of LaGrange, Ga., Agatha Baggin of LaFayette, and Agnes Paige, Debbie
Evans and Yulondor Dian Foster of Roanoke; and a large number of aunts, uncles,
nieces and nephews.
   Arrangements are by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke.

Boyd B. Sawyer Jr.

   (ROBINSVILLE, N.C.) Boyd B. Sawyer Jr., 60, of Robbinville, N.C., died
Wednesday June 25, 2003 at Britthaven of Graham, N.C.
   A native of Graham County, N.C., he was the son of Boyd and Belle Griggs
Sawyer.  His daughter, Cindy Sawyer Moore, preceded him in death.
   In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Frances Farr Sawyer;
a son, Jeffery Sawyer of Robbinsville; a brother, Billy D. Sawyer of Smyrna, Ga.
and three grandchildren.
   Junior, as he was known to his many friends, was a resident of Roanoke from
1981 until 2002.  He was the brother-in-law of Opal Blackmon and Freddie McCard
of Roanoke.
   Services were at 8 p.m. Friday, June 27, at Townson-Smith Chapel,
Robbinsville, with the Revs. Donald Colvard and Daniel Stewart officiating. 
Committal services were at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at Lower Yellow Creek
Cemetery.  Arrangements were by Townson-Smith Funeral Home.

Macie Rilda Hendricks

   (DECATUR, Ga.) Macie Rilda Hester Hendricks, 78, died Friday, June 20, 2003
at DeKalb Medical Center after a courageous struggle with many illnesses over a
period of years.
   Macie was a native of Randolph County, where she was her high school
valedictorian and salutatorian of her class at Berry College.  She was employed
for years in the general accounting and in the acturial departments of Life
Insurance Company of Georgia.  She was an active member of University Heights
United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Tuesday Adventure Group
and The Crusader Sunday School Class.
   Survivors include her husband of 47 years, William Edward Hendricks; a
daughter, Kathy Drummond; two grandsons; a son, W. Ed. Hendricks Jr.; three
sisters, Omie Burgess, Wilma H. Davis and Bettie Ruth McClain; four brothers,
retired Lt. Col. Thomas J. Hester, Isaac M. Hester, John M. Hester and Willis G.
Hester; and many nieces and nephews.
   Services were Tuesday, June 24 at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel of A.S. Turner and
Sons, with the Rev. William B. Roane, the Rev. James Sanders and the Rev. John
Dallas officiating.  Interment was in Floral Hills Memory Gardens.  Those
desiring may make contributions to University Heights United Methodist Church,
1267 Balsam Drive, Decatur, GA 30033.
   Arrangements were by Turner and Sons, Decatur, Ga.

Wendy Kirby Jackson

   (DESTIN, Fla.) Services for Wendy Kirby Jackson, 29, of Destin, Fla., will be
at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2003, at Frederick's Funeral Home in Opelika, with
the Rev. Andy Buchanan officiating.  Burial will follow in Garden Hills
Cemetery.
   Mrs. Jackson, who died at Ft. Walton Beach Medical Center, Ft. Walton Beach,
Fla., on Monday, June 30, was a native of Randolph County.  She lived much of
her childhood in Roanoke before moving to the Valley.
   Survivors include her husband, Richard Tab Jackson of Destin; a son, Timothy
Chaffin Jackson, and daughter Hillary Tab Jackson, both of Destin; her mom and
dad, Jane and Ronnie Bonner of Valley; her father, Bill Kirby of Roanoke; two
sisters, Robbie Worthy of Wedowee and Renee Miller of Montgomery; her maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Hinton of Valley; her paternal grandmother, Sue
Kirby of Roanoke; and many other relatives and friends.
   Arrangements are by Frederick's Funeral Home, Opelika.

James Bernard Austin Jr.

   (WEDOWEE) Services for James Bernard "Zerex" Austin Jr., 45, of Wedowee will
be Wednesday, July 2, 2003, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Wedowee,
with the Rev. Gary Henderson officiating.  Burial will follow in Wedowee City
Cemetery.
   Mr. Austin died Monday, June 30, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Mr. Austin was a native of Randolph County, born Oct. 27, 1957, son of James
Bernard Austin Sr. and Janie Huey Austin.  Mr. Austin was a member of First
United Methodist Church of Wedowee and a former member of Wedowee Volunteer Fire
Department and Wedowee Quarterback Club.  He had worked for the Town of Wedowee
and with construction equipment and plumbing and electrical installation and
repair.
   Mr. Austin is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard "J.B." Austin of
Wedowee; a sister, Veronica Austin of Wedowee; and a loving pet, "Abby."
   Pallbearers will be Alan Satterwhite, Mike Spradlin, Danny Rollins, Sammy
Huey, Andy Nelson, Lee Brantley, Thomas Rollins and Charlie Will Thompson. 
Honorary pallbearers will be the Randolph County High School Class of 1975.
   The family will receive friends at Benefield Funeral Home until one hour
prior to services.  Mr. Austin will lie in state at the church for one hour
beginning at 1 p.m.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Arthur Duke Sikes

   (WILLS POINT, Texas) Services for Arthur Duke Sikes, 82 of Wills Point,
Texas, were at 1 p.m. Monday, June 23, 2003 at Allan Fuller Funeral Home Chapel
in Wills Point, with the Rev. Tom Wilbanks and the Rev. Chuck Schorlemmer
officiating.  Burial was at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas.
   Mr. Sikes died Friday, June 20, at his residence.
   He was born Oct. 7, 1920, in Roanoke, son of the late Arthur Burton Sikes and
Amelia Aline Duke Sikes.  He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1940 and served in the
Pacific during World War II as a naval photographer and aircrew member.  In
addition to several sea duty tours in the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, he had
shore duty assignments in Virginia, Maryland, Florida and California during his
30-year career.  He served as officer-in-charge of naval photographic
laboratories in Virginia Beach, Va., and San Diego, Calif., before his final
tour of duty as director of training for the Naval Schools of Photography in
Pensacola, Fla.  He retired from the Navy as a lieutenant commander in 1970. 
Duke was married to Faye Cofield on April 20, 1946, in Alabama.  She preceded
him in death on Aug. 16, 1995.
   Mr. Sikes moved to Richardson, Texas, in 1972 and worked in supervisory
positions with Southwestern Steel Container Corporation in Dallas.  He retired
to Wills Point in 1984 and as married to Millie Bowden on Dec. 2, 1995, in Wills
Point.  He was a member of First Christian Church in Wills Point.  During his 50
years as a Mason, he was a past master and endowed member of the Wills Point
Masonic Lodge #422.  He received the Golden Trowel Oct. 1, 1994.  He was also an
endowed member at Grand Saline Masonic Lodge #1269 and belonged to the Scottish
Rite and Hella Shrine Temple.  Mr. Sikes was also a past patron of the Wills
Point Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #366 and Grand Saline #290.  He
was also a member of the John Walters Royal Arch Commandery in Norfolk, Va.
   He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
   Survivors include his wife, Mildred "Millie" Sikes of Wills Point; a son,
Arthur D. Sikes Jr. of Arlington, Texas; a daughter, Marilyn Saams of Mesquite,
Texas; a step-daughter, Patti Rodriquez of Caddo Mills, Texas; six
grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
   Memorial donations may be made to the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, 2222
Welborn, Dallas, TX 75219.
   Arrangements were by Allan Fuller Funeral Home, Wills Point.

Nancy Liles Stephens

   (CRAGFORD) Services for Nancy Liles Stephens, 59, of Cragford will be
Wednesday, July 9, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel in Roanoke,
with the Rev. Zenus Windsor officiating.  Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist
Church in Wadley.  Pallbearers were [will be] nephews.
   Mrs. Stephens died Sunday, July 6, at her residence.
   Survivors include her husband, Merrill Stephens of Cragford; two daughters,
Stephanie Railey and Leigh Hopkins of Wadley; three sons, Brad Stephens of
Orange Beach, Greg Stephens of Lincoln, and Brian Stephens of Woodland; one
sister, Mollie Steward [Stewart] of Wadley; her mother, Kathryn Liles of Wadley;
and nine grandchildren.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Stephens was born May 24, 1944, daughter of
Romie Ruff and Kathryn Hodge Liles.  She was a member of Southside Baptist
Church in Talladega and had been employed with Lineville Nursing Home.  She was
preceded in death by her father.
   The family will accept flowers or donations to American Cancer Society or
Clay County Hospice.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Joseph Steven Eidson

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Bro. Joseph Steven Eidson, 56, of Wedowee were
Tuesday, July 8, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Wedowee, with
the Rev. William Thompson and the Rev. Toby Stevens officiating.
   Bro. Eidson died Sunday, July 6, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.
   Survivors include his wife, Linda Saye Eidson of Wedowee; two daughters, Tara
Evans of Newnan, Ga.; and Tanya Harbin of Luthersville, Ga.; four sons, Samuel
Eidson of Wedowee, Joe Harbin of Ellenwood, Ga., Ed Harbin of Newnan, Ga., and
Brian Eidson of Griffin, Ga.; his mother, Jane Eidson of Fairburn, Ga.; three
sisters, Carol Fox of Woodbury, Ga., and Janice Erwin and Jennie Coley of
Fairburn, Ga.; a brother, Mike Eidson of Fairburn; and nine grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Mark Griffin, Marty Starkey, John Wayne Mitchell, Keith
Mulder, Hershal Duke and Jeff Freeman.  Honorary pallbearers were Buford Abner,
Mack McCormick, Jerry Rice, Calvin Bailey and Les Cash.
   The family suggests memorials to Grace Prison Ministry (c/o Steve Eidson at
Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church).
   An Atlanta native, Bro. Eidson was born Sept. 23, 1946, son of Joseph Stone
and Jane Hodnett Eidson.  He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and was
involved in the Grace Outreach Prison Ministry.  He had been employed with
Amoco.

Tommy E. Stewart

   (LINEVILLE) Services for Tommy E. Stewart, 51, of Lineville were Friday, July
4, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Lineville with the Revs. Raymond
Long and Tim Tipton officiating.  Burial was in the adjoining cemetery with
Benefield Funeral Home of Lineville in charge.
   Mr. Stewart died Wednesday, July 2, at Clay County Hospital.  
   Survivors include his wife, Dianne H. Stewart; two daughters, Lori S. McGill
of Lineville and Anna M. Waldrop of Heflin; his mother, Elva Stewart of Ashland;
and four brothers, Bobby Stewart, James "Pete" Stewart and Billy Stewart, all of
Wadley, and Johnny Stewart of Stockbridge, Ga.
   Mr. Stewart, a Wadley native, had lived in Clay County 30 years.  He was a
member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Lineville.  He owned and operated Stewart
Construction Company and was a Mason.

Nick Smith

   (WOODLAND) Services for Nick Smith, 70, of Woodland will be Wednesday, July
9, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church in Woodland, with the Rev. David
Daniel officiating.  Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.
   Mr. Smith will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services.
   Mr. Smith died Sunday, July 6, at Atlanta Medical Center.
   Survivors include his wife, Mary Lowe Smith of Woodland; four sons, Chuck
Smith and Glen Smith of Woodland, Thomas "Runt" Smith of Elberton, Ga., and Ted
Smith of Ranburne; his mother, Gertrude Prescott Smith of Woodland; a brother,
James Clarence Smith of Fort Pierce, Fla.; eight grandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and a host of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers will be Larry Nobbley, Ricky Spratlin, Steve Cantrell, Jerome
Hammond, Dale Dye and Phillip Heard.  Honorary pallbearers will be Glen
McDaniel, Harvey Gentry, Harold Harmon, Gladstone Prescott and Jacob Smitherman.
   A former Florida resident, Mr. Smith was a Randolph County native, born May
16, 1933.  He served in the Army, had been employed with Southwire Company and
was a member of Providence Baptist Church and the Masonic Heaton Lodge.  He was
preceded in death by his father, Clarence Smith.
   Arrangements are by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Frances Geraldine Pate

   (WEDOWEE) Services for Frances Geraldine Pate, 61, of Wedowee were Monday,
July 7, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Woodland First Congregational Methodist Church, with
the Rev. Earl Rollins and the Rev. Donald Spradlin officiating.  Burial was at
Midway United Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Pate died Saturday, July 5, at Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center
in Anniston.
   Survivors include her husband, John C. "Mert" Pate of Wedowee; four
daughters, Martha Cook and Kathy Peek of Wedowee, Regina Autrey of Roanoke and
Susan Garrett of Woodland; two sisters, Floris Carr of Wadley and Peggy
Richardson of Roanoke; a brother, Jerry Craven of Wadley; 14 grandchildren and
five great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Tim Cook, Robert Garrett, Charlie Peek, John Henderson, Josh
Rollins and Keith Langley.
   Mrs. Pate was a Randolph County native, born Dec. 24, 1941, daughter of
Awbrey Clemon and Christine Mitchell Craven.  She was a homemaker and a member
of Woodland First Congregational Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by
a grandson, Dusty Cook.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Mary Foster Sudduth

   (ROANOKE) Services for Mary Foster Sudduth, 92, of Roanoke were Monday, July
7, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Lebanon Christian Church, Roanoke, with the Rev. Roger
Jones officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.  Pallbearers were
grandsons.
   Mrs. Sudduth died Saturday, July 5, at Wedowee Hospital.
   Survivors include two daughters, Betty Jane Norred of Fayetteville, Ga., and
Abigail Hall of Midway; a sister, Alma Foster Huff of Dacula, Ga.; seven
grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
   A Chambers County native, Mrs. Sudduth was born Aug 29, 1910, the first of
four children to Troy M. and Mattie McCoy Foster of Milltown.  After graduating
from Milltown High School, class of 1930, she became the wife of Guy Sudduth and
a member of Lebanon Church for more than 70 years.  She was preceded in death by
her husband of 52 years; two brothers, S. T. "Sam" Foster and Carroll S. Foster;
and her parents.
   In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Lebanon Christian Church
(c/o P.O. Box 364, Roanoke, AL 36274).
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Thelma Hammond

   (LAFAYETTE) Thelma Hammond, 86, of LaFayette died Sunday, July 6, 2003, at
her residence.
   Services will be Friday, July 11, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion Missionary
Baptist Church, LaFayette, with the Rev. Melvin Owens officiating.  Interment
will be in the Rehope Baptist Church Cemetery, LaFayette.
   Born Sept. 4, 1916, in Heard County, Ga., Mrs. Hammond late moved to Chambers
County and became a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church at an early
age.  She served faithfully in the Missionary Society, was chairperson of
kitchen committee, a choir member, director of youth department and general
helper in the church.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Laz and Lizzie
Hammond.
   Surviving are one daughter, Anita H. Higgins of LaFayette; one foster
brother, Robert Jackson of Milwaukee, Wis.; one granddaughter; two
great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
   Arrangements are by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette.

   (NEWELL) Services for Ronnie Lynn Sheats, 47, of Newell were Tuesday, July 8,
2003, at 4 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church in Newell, with the Rev. Barrett
Holloway officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Sheats died Sunday, July 6, at his residence.
   Survivors include his wife, Teresa Cole Sheats of Newell; one daughter, Keyla
Bramhall of Newell; two sons, Brandon Corell Sheats and Jason Sheats of Newell;
his mother, I. V. Sheats; two sisters, Ivy Nell Shelton of Carrollton, Ga., and
Carrie Holloway of Wedowee; two brothers, Bobby Joel Sheats and Sephus Corell
Sheats of Newell; one adopted brother, Basil Snyder of Newell; and three
grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Bruce Anderson, Danny Smith, Basil Snyder, Tim Pool, Phil
Parley and Danny Roberts.  Honorary pallbearers were Duke Snyder and Timmy
Williamson.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Sheats was born Nov. 26, 1955, son of Bobby C.
and I. V. Williamson Sheats.  He was a self-employed poultry farmer.  He was
preceded in death by his father and one daughter, Amy Lynn Sheats.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Essie Towler Barfield

   (ROANOKE) Services for Essie Towler Barfield, 95, of Roanoke were Sunday,
July 6, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Rock Mills Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom
Russell and the Rev. Wendell Rush officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory
Gardens.
   Mrs. Barfield died Friday, July 4, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   A Randolph County native, Mrs. Barfield was born Sept. 29, 1907, daughter of
William and Josie Yarbrough Towler.  She was a member of Rock Mills Methodist
Church and had been employed with Wehadkee Yarn Mill.  She was preceded in death
by her husband, Hoyt Barfield; one son, Lynn Barfield; and her parents.
   Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Rollins and Ellen Holloway of Rock
Mills; one son, Calvin Barfield of LaFayette; two sisters, Josie Mae Norred and
Grace Prescott of Roanoke; 12 grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Randy Barfield, Allen Barfield, Bryan Holloway, Brit
Rollins, Steve Green, Danny Edmondson, Allen Hubbard, Albert Johnson and Chad
Payne.

Flora Varner Allen

   (FREDONIA) Flora H. Varner Allen, 94, of Five Points (Fredonia) died Friday,
July 4, 2003, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital, Valley.
   Services will be Thursday, July 10, at 11 at Mt. Zion United Methodist
Church, Five Points, with the Rev. Cecelia Broome officiating.
   Mrs. Allen was the 13th child of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Wesley Varner of
Tuskegee.  She married the late Jimmie Lee Allen Sr. in 1929.  To this union was
born nine children, two of whom preceded her in death.
   Surviving are five daughters and two sons, Florine Harris of Riverdale,
Calif., Jimmie Lee Allen Jr. of Fredonia, Mary Morgan of Five Points, Josephus
Allen of Cusseta, Lurania Johnson of Bisbee, Az., Lucille Johnson of Five
Points, and Felicia Compton of Lithia Springs, Ga.; 34 grandchildren; 74
great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; two special caregivers, Wadie
Allen and Frances Heard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Mary Armenta Hodge Morris

   (WADLEY) Funeral services for Mary Armenta Hodge Morris, 84, of Wadley were
Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Wadley First Methodist Church with the
Rev. Abigail Carlisle-Wilke officiating and Quattlebaum Funeral in charge. 
Burial followed at Wadley Cemetery.
   Mrs. Morris died Friday, July 11, 2003, at Clay County Nursing Home in
Ashland.
   Survivors include a sister-in-law, Rena Mae Hodge of Wadley; nieces, Patricia
Watson of Eufaula and Susie Rovansek and Kay Mallory of Fairfax, Va.; and a
nephew, Paul Hodge of Crossville, Tenn.
   Pallbearers were Gene Watson, Paul Hodge, Lee Watson, Craig Harris, James
Rollins and Larry Estes.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Morris was born Aug. 14, 1918,
daughter of Lee Andrew and Hettie Amason Hodge.  She was a member of Wadley
First Methodist Church and had been employed with the State of Alabama
Unemployment Services.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence
Morris.

   (ROANOKE) Funeral services for Myrtice Christine Veal, 79, of Roanoke will be
Thursday, July 17, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel in Roanoke with

Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   The family will receive friends Wednesday, July 16, from 5 to 9 p.m. at
Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.
   Mrs. Veal died Tuesday, July 15, at Randolph Medical Center in Roanoke.
   Survivors include a son, Ricky Veal, of Roanoke; 10 grandchildren and 15
great-grandchildren.
   A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mrs. Veal was born April 14, 1924,
daughter of Walter Charlie and Cordie Mae Prestridge Scott.  She was a member of
Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in LaGrange, Ga., and had been employed with Fashion
Star in Wedowee.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Henton "Sam" Veal,
and two sons, Ray Veal and Lamar Veal Sr.

Robert Stacy Hassell

   (ROANOKE) Memorial services for Robert Stacy Hassell, 40, of Roanoke were
Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel with the Rev.

   Mr. Hassell died Thursday, July 10, at his residence.
   Survivors include his wife, Sandra Kirby Hassell of Roanoke; parents, Bob and
Myra Hassell of Childersburg; grandfather, Johnnie Eiland of Sylacauga; a
stepdaughter, Amanda Calhoun of Roanoke; and a stepson, Adam Calhoun, also of
Roanoke.
   A former Childersburg resident, Mr. Hassell was born Sept. 27, 1962, in
Sylacauga.  He was Baptist and had been employed with Kimberly Clark.  He was
preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ernest and Della Hassell and
maternal grandmother, Lillian Eiland.

Earl Bonner

   (CHARLESTON, S.C.) Earl Darrell Bonner of Charleston, S.C., husband of the
late Marjorie L. Bonner, died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at a local hospital.
   He was born in Standing Rock, Ala., to the late Earl Stevenson and Peggy
Louise Terry Bonner.  Mr. Bonner attended Jacksonville State University and
graduated from Auburn University.  After graduating, he served in the U.S. Army
during World War II.  He was later employed by the Charleston Naval Shipyard and
worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years as a federal inspector.  He was
an active member and past president of NARFE and the National Association of
Postal Supervisors organization.  He was the president of the Charleston Postal
Credit Union.  Mr. Bonner was an emeritus member of the church council,
president of the C.E. Williams Sunday School class and member of the finance
committee of the John Wesley United Methodist Church.
   Surviving Mr. Bonner is one daughter, Carole Bonner Rathbun; one
granddaughter and one great-grandson; four brothers, John T. Bonner of Valley,
Lee T. Bonner of Ashland, Blount S. Bonner of Anniston and Robert L. Bonner of
Donaldsonville, Ga.; two sisters, Miriam L. Bonner Arnold of Columbus, Ga. and
Ellen K. Bonner Brown of Roanoke; and numerous nieces and nephews.
   Funeral services were at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 1, at John Wesley United
Methodist Church.  Burial followed at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Benjamin B. 'Bob' Hadaway

   (GRANTVILLE, Ga.) Benjamin B. "Bob" Hadaway, 80, of Grantville, Ga., formerly
of Macon, Ga., died Friday, July 11, 2003, at Hospice LaGrange in LaGrange, Ga.
   Mr. Hadaway, born June 4, 1923, in Lanett, was the son of the late Jesse and
Mary Barber Hadaway.  He had lived in Grantville since 1990 and was a Marine
veteran of World War II.  He retired from Georgia Kaolin, was a former member of
the Macon Lions Club and a member of First Christian Church in Newnan, Ga.
   Survivors include his wife, Louise Chapman Hadaway of Grantville; a son,
Bobby Hadaway of LaGrange; five sisters, Jessie Pless of Dadeville, Ann Hudson
of Huntsville, Nedra Pinney of Lanett, Nell Haynes of Wedowee and LaTayne Haynes
of Guntersville; a brother, Rance Hadaway of Five Points; and four
grandchildren.
   A memorial service was at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13, in the chapel of Claude A.
McKibben and Sons Funeral Home with Minister John Hamrick officiating.  Burial
was in Fairfax Cemetery.

Crenshaw of Dalton, Ga.; three brothers, Denson Dunlap of Roanoke, Chelcie
Dunlap of Newell and Ricky Dunlap of Opelika; a special niece and nephew; 16
grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

   A Troup County, Ga., native, Mr. Dunlap was born May 28, 1927, son of Homer
Lee and Sceleste Overton Dunlap.  He was a member of Welcome Home Baptist
Church, where he had served as a deacon since 1977.  Mr. Dunlap was a World War
II veteran and had worked as a metal specialist.

J. M. Alfred Haynes

   (ANNISTON) Services for J. M. Alfred Haynes, 80, of Anniston were Monday,
July 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Gray Brown-Service Mortuary Chapel with the Rev.
Lowell Pinkard officiating.  Burial was in Anniston Memorial Gardens.
   Mr. Haynes died Saturday, July 12.
   Survivors include three sisters, Rosa Bell Dennis and Sally Argo of Anniston
and Jennie Mae Pinkard of Cleveland, Tenn.; and four brothers, Carl A. Haynes
and Edward Haynes of Anniston, Vernon Haynes of Wedowee and William Haynes of
Gadsden.
   Mr. Haynes was a native and lifelong resident of Calhoun County.  He was a
Baptist.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Brooks and Lola Mae Haynes;
three brothers, Brooks Haynes Jr., Charles Haynes and Herbert Haynes; and two
sisters, Florine Morgan and Dorothy Carter.

Elbredge Garrett Adamson

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Services for Elbredge Garrett "E.G." Adamson, 86, of
LaGrange, Ga., formerly of Roanoke, were Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 3 p.m. at
Bethany Lime Congregational Christian Church, with the Rev. Stanley Yarbrough
officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.
   Mr. Adamson died Tuesday, July 8, at Florence Hand Home in LaGrange.
   Survivors include his wife, Barlice Saltsman Adamson of LaGrange, and several
nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Hugh Benefield, Greg Benefield, Gene Adamson and Chuck
Thompson.  Honorary pallbearers was Milam Adamson.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Adamson was born Aug. 15, 1916, son of William
Jefferson and Maude Ellen Bonner Adamson.  He was a World War II veteran, a
member of Bethany Lime Congregational Christian Church, and had been employed
with Daniel Lumber Company.

James Madison Swader

   (ROANOKE) Services for James Madison Swader, 75, of Roanoke were Friday, July
11, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette, with the Rev. John

   Mr. Swader died Thursday, June 10, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital,
Valley.
   A native of Chambers County, Mr. Swader was born May 22, 1928.  A member of
Five Points Baptist Church in Five Points, he was an army veteran of the Korean
War and operated the Welch Super Service store in the Welch community for many
years.
   He is survived by three sisters, Ruby Swader of Roanoke, Myrtle Cole of
Milltown and Thelma Jarrells of Odessa, Texas; two brothers, Charlie Swader and
Marion "Bully" Swader of Valley; and a host of nieces and nephews.

James 'Herman' Ragland

   (COLUMBUS, Ga.) James "Herman" Ragland, 82, of Salem died Sunday, July 13,
2003, at Columbus Hospice House.
   Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, July 16, at 2 p.m. at McMullen
Funeral Home Chapel in Columbus with the Rev. Elbert Ward officiating.  A
private interment will be held in Parkhill Cemetery.
   Mr. Ragland is survived by his wife, Mazie Cranford Ragland of Salem; his
daughter, Nancy Ragland Sauer of Luling, La.; two sons, Jeff Ragland of Tarpon
Springs, Fla., and Larold Ragland of Rileyville, Va.; two sisters, Minnie Nix of
Valley and Annice Watson of Hughley; five grandchildren and three grandchildren
[sic]; and a sister-in-law.
   Born June 10, 1921, in Rock Mills, Mr. Ragland was retired from Fort Benning
as a television production engineer and was a U.S. Army veteran.  He was Baptist
by faith.  He moved to Columbus in 1956, later relocating to Salem in 1971.  Mr.
Ragland was preceded in death by his first wife, Odell Hamil Ragland; and his
brothers, Johnny and Hubert Ragland.  He was the son of the late Mary Ellis Boyd
Ragland and Henry Clifford Ragland.

Willie B. Billingsley Jr.

   (BIRMINGHAM) Willie B. Billingsley Jr., 52, of Birmingham died Saturday, July
19, 2003, at his residence.
   Services will be Thursday, July 24, at 2 p.m. at Union Chapel United
Methodist Church, Wedowee, with the Rev. William Crawford officiating. 
Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.
   Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Pamela Billingsley of Birmingham; his
mother, Mrs. Eula Mae Billingsley of Wedowee; two sons, Anthony Parker of
Roanoke and Jarvis Jones of Carrollton, Ga.; five daughters, Adrienne
Billingsley of Wedowee, Elanda Billingsley Boddie of Marietta, Ga., Keisha Jones
of Roanoke and Tasha Billingsley and Alisha Billingsley of Birmingham; one
stepson, DeWayne Jones of Carrollton; two brothers, Charles H. West of Tuskegee
and Roy Michael Billingsley of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two sisters, Mildred
Anderson of Colorado Springs and Icie Bell Langston of Wadley; and three
grandchildren.
   Public viewing and visitation will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service on
Wednesday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.
   Mr. Billingsley was born in Wedowee Oct. 9, 1950, to the late Willie B.
Billingsley Sr. and Mrs. Eula Mae West Billingsley.  He joined Union Chapel
United Methodist Church at a young age and remained a member until his death. 
He was a 1969 graduate of Wedowee High School.  In addition to father, he was
also preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Dewayne Jones.  Mr. Billingsley worked
in the building construction industry until declining health caused him to give
up his vocation.  Having traveled wherever his vocation took him, he had
previously resided in Woodland, Carrollton, Atlanta, and most recently in
Birmingham.

Jessie Rebecca Hawkins

   (ROANOKE) Jessie Rebecca Hawkins, 42, of Roanoke died Thursday, July 17,
2003, at Randolph Medical Center, Roanoke.
   Services were Tuesday, July 22, at 2 p.m. at Pure Holiness Church of God,
Roanoke, with Elder John C. Greathouse officiating.
   Survivors include her husband, Eddie Morgan of Roanoke; one son, Edwin
Hawkins of Roanoke; three daughters, Jelander Hawkins, Elizabeth Hawkins and
Jessica Hawkins of Roanoke; five brothers, Rufus Hawkins of Anniston and Bobby
Hawkins, Ulice Hawkins Jr. and Billy Hawkins of Roanoke; and two sisters,
Acquilla Woods of Huntsville and Helen Hawkins of Roanoke.
   Ms. Hawkins was born March 6, 1961, in Anniston to the late Ulice Hawkins Sr.
and Lucille Allen Hawkins.  She raised one son and three daughters despite a
disabling diabetic condition.  She was a faithful member of Pure Holiness Church
of God in Roanoke.

   (ROANOKE) Services for the Rev. C. J. Starnes, 84, of Roanoke were Sunday,
July 20, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Woodland Church of God, with his daughters offering
a tribute to their father.  Burial was at Gray Hill Church of God Cemetery.
   Rev. Starnes died Friday, July 18, at his residence.
   Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Hanner of Woodland and Martha
Marie Baldwin and Rachel Sikes of Roanoke; a brother, Alton Starnes of Cullman;
10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Dewayne Baldwin, Joseph Baldwin, Michael Baldwin, David
Baldwin, Jason Baldwin and Matthew Richardson.
   A Blount County native, Rev. Starnes was born Nov. 30, 1918, son of Garvin
and Ida Lattie Starnes.  He attended Vaughn's School of Music and served in the
army.  The Rev. Starnes was a retired Church of God minister with 35 years of
service in Alabama.  He was a member of Woodland Church of God.  He was preceded
in death by his wife, Edna Laney Starnes, and his parents.

   (SOUTHSIDE) Services for Diana L. Butler, 27, of Southside were Sunday, July

   Miss Butler died Thursday, July 17, at her home.
   Survivors include her mother, Judy Vivette Butler of Southside; her father,
Michael Butler of Louisiana; and her grandparents, Martha and Rev. Andy Butler

   Miss Butler, an Alexandria native and longtime Southside resident, was a
member of Ohatchee Church of Christ.  She graduated from Southside High School
and attended Gadsden State School of Nursing.  She was preceded in death by her
grandparents, William O. and Mertice Walden of Oxford.

   (TERRELL, Texas) Funeral services for Cherie Kay Dykes Cox, 57, of Terrell,

officiating.  Burial followed at 11:30 a.m. at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in
Lanett.
   Mrs. Cox died Tuesday, July 15, in Terrell, Texas.
   Survivors include her husband, Tim Cox of Terrell; three sons, Chris Brooks
of Virginia, Timothy Cox and Christopher Cox, both of Roanoke; three daughters,
Angelia Richards of Charleston, S.C., Michelle Padgett of Valley and Renae
Baldwin of Carrollton, Texas; six grandchildren; a brother, Frank G. Dykes Jr.
of LaFayette; a twin brother, Ray Dykes of Hickory Creek, Texas; two sisters,
Sandra McLain of Auburn and Brenda Barnett of Hickory Creek, Texas; and a number
of nieces and nephews.
   Pallbearers were Jim Baldwin, Kenneth Baldwin, Danny Baldwin, Tommy Cox, Ron
Thorton and Darren Lack.
   Mrs. Cox was born May 1, 1946, in Langdale, daughter of Frank G. and Irona
Dykes of Shawmut.  Mrs. Cox attended Shawmut and Valley High Schools.  She
worked at Kessler's in West Point, Ga., Kroger in Lanett and Wal-Mart in Roanoke
and in Terell, Texas.  She attended Shawmut Church of the Nazarene.  She was
preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dorothy Schwiening.

Lois D. Harkins

   (ASHLAND) Services for Lois D. Harkins, 98, of Ashland were Thursday, July

Willis and Kenneth Lipham officiating.  Burial was in Liberty Hill United
Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Mrs. Harkins died Tuesday, July 15, at Dr. C. P. Horn/Clay County Nursing
Home.
   Survivors include three daughters, Sarah Griffin and Ann McCain, both of
Ashland, and Polly Mattox of Mobile; two sisters, Ruth Mitchell and Naomi
Thomas, both of Ashland; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and seven
great-great-grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Justin McCain, Josh McCain, Billy Cherry, Keith Johnson, Ivey
Queen, Rusty Smith, Ed Pruet, Matt Lipham and Andy Lipham.  Honorary pallbearers
were employees of Clay County/Dr. C. P. Horn Nursing Home.
   Mrs. Harkins, a Randolph County native, had lived most of her life in Clay
County.  She was a member of Liberty Hill United Methodist Church and served as
a member of the UMW, as the pianist, and taught the adult Sunday school class
for 50 years.  She retired from the Clay County Board of Education with 25 years
of service as a fifth-grade teacher at Millerville Elementary.  She was a member
of the retired teacher's association.  She was preceded in death by her husband,
Willie Joe Harkins.

Frances Norred Harmon

   (WEST POINT, Ga.) Frances N. Harmon, 71, of West Point, Ga., died Sunday
night, July 20, 2003, at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, Ga.
   Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, at 2 p.m. at Reeds
Chapel Baptist Church in West Point with the Rev. Bill Smith officiating. 
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
   Mrs. Harmon is survived by her husband, Thomas Eugene Harmon; four daughters,
Connie Alle, Marie Striblin, Peggy Arrington and Lisa McClellan, all of Valley;
five sons, Tommy Harmon of Lanett, Dennis Harmon and David Harmon, both of West
Point, Mike Harmon of Valley and Timmy Harmon of LaGrange, Ga.; three sisters,
Ruby Adams of Lanett, Julie Harrison of Clarksville, Tenn., and Myrtle Newman
of West Point; her brother, Winfred Norred of West Point; 18 grandchildren, 18
great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
   Born Feb. 18, 1932, in Randolph County, Ala., Mrs. Harmon had been a
wonderful, loving wife for 56 years, and was a loving mother, grandmother and
great-grandmother.  She was of the Baptist faith.  Mrs. Harmon was the daughter
of the late Bertha Smith Norred and George Norred.

   Mr. Clark died Tuesday, July 22, at his residence.
   Survivors include his wife, Norma Lee Clark of Roanoke; two daughters,
Margaret Brand of Montgomery and Wanda Dorothy Clark of Roanoke; and two nieces,
Resa McDaniel and Ressa Carden of Roanoke.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Clark was born March 25, 1918, son of Aulcie
Columbus and Zebra Lee Simmons Clark.  He was a World War II veteran and a
member of Rock Springs Christian Church.  Mr. Clark had been self-employed in
the pulpwood industry.  He was preceded in death by three children, Sandra
Jeanette Clark, Jerry Ted Clark and Phillip Clark; three brothers, Clarence
Clark, Herman David Clark and Curtis Clark; and his parents.
   The family will accept flowers or donations may be made to American Cancer
Society.
   Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

John William 'J.W.' Haynes

   (LINEVILLE) Graveside services for John William "J.W." Haynes, 74, of
Lineville were Friday, July 18, 2003, at 1 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery in Munford
with Jeff Clark officiating.
   Mr. Haynes died Tuesday, July 15, at Lineville Health Care.
   Survivors include a daughter, Norma Stephens of Munford; two brothers, Homer
Haynes of Sylacauga and Howard Haynes of Munford; two sisters, Joyce Haynes and
Rheba Adams, both of Wadley; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren; and
several nieces and nephews.
   Mr. Haynes was a Talladega native and lifelong resident.  He served in the
Navy and was a retired farmer.

Era Knight

   (WEDOWEE) Era Knight, 96, of County Road 33, Wedowee, died Sunday, July 27,
2003, at her residence.
   Services will be Thursday, July 31, at 1 p.m. at Weathers Heights Church of
Christ, Wedowee, with the Rev. Henry Nelson, Elder Thomas Knight and the Rev.
Melvin Langston officiating.  Burial will be in Pine Flat Primitive Baptist
Church Cemetery.
   Survivors include two daughters, Fannie Maude Berry of Wedowee and Mildred
Battle of Los Angeles, Calif.; four sons, Charlie Knight and Robert Knight of
Birmingham, K. V. Knight of Wedowee and David Knight of Carrollton, Ala.; and a
special niece, Rosie Reed Mills of Birmingham.
   She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Knight.
   Visitation and viewing will be at Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke,
from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Wednesday.  Mrs. Knight will be placed in the church
one hour before services.

John T. Winston

   (ROANOKE) John T. Winston, 72, of Roanoke died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at
East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.
   Services were Saturday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church,
Bacon Level, with the Rev. Bradley Gipson officiating.  Burial was in the church
cemetery.
   Survivors include a son, Talley Winston of Rome, Ga.; two daughters, Teresa
Mclin of Chicamauga, Ga., and Frankie Sims of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three
brothers, Willie Winston of Atlanta, Ga., Rowe Winston of Roanoke and Larry
Freeman of College Park, Ga.; and five sisters, Katie Person of Dayton, Ohio,
Minnie Cargill of College Park, Ga., Peggy Boddie of Atlanta, Brenda Ware of
Roanoke, and Maggie Polke of Jacksonville, Fla.  He was preceded in death by his
parents, Talley and Pauline Magby Winston; a son, Eric Winston; and two
brothers, Henry Frank Winston and William Curtis Winston.

Julie Alice Watts

   (ROANOKE) Services for Julie Watts, 49, of Roanoke will be on Wednesday, July
30, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Roanoke Church of [the]Nazarene, with the Rev. Kendell
Spear officiating.  Burial will follow at Randolph Memory Gardens.
   Mrs. Watts died Sunday, July 27, at Grady Hospital in Atlanta.
   Survivors include her husband, John Wesley Watts of Roanoke; two daughters,
Jan Jordan and Elizabeth Watts of Roanoke; two sons, Jamie Johnson of
Jacksonville and Mark Jordan of Roanoke; one sister, Clara Mitchell of Wedowee;
two brothers, Lee Johnson of LaGrange, Ga., and David Johnson of Newnan, Ga.;
and five grandchildren.
   A Chambers County native, Mrs. Watts was born May 20, 1954, daughter of
Thurston and Myrtle Jacks Johnson.  She was a homemaker and a member of Roanoke
Church of the Nazarene.  She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister,
Margaret Carden, and two brothers, Terry Johnson and Jerry Johnson.

Mattie Neva Sharp

   (LINCOLN) Services for Mattie Neva Sharp, 85, of Lincoln were Sunday, July
27, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Pine Hill Church of Christ in Randolph County with John
Rice and Hal Simpson officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery with Brown
& Kughn Memory Chapel of Anniston in charge.
   Mrs. Sharp died Thursday, July 24, at Carraway Hospital in Birmingham.
   Survivors include her husband, John C. Sharp; a son, Gene S. Sharp of
Lincoln; and a grandchild, Tyler Sharp.
   Pallbearers were members of the Lincoln police and fire departments.
   Mrs. Sharp, a Newell native, lived in Calhoun and Talladega counties most of
her life.  She was a member of Lincoln Church of Christ.  She retired from
Alabama Power Co., with more than 30 years of service.  She was preceded in
death by three brothers, Charles Simpson, R. D. Simpson and Elton Simpson; and a
sister, Mrs. H. E. "Nora" Stedham.

Jimmy Richard Sims

   (ROANOKE) Services for Jimmy Richard Sims, 53, of Roanoke were Saturday, July
26, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Quattlebaum Funeral Chapel, Roanoke, with the Rev. Gerald
Sheppard officiating.  Burial was at Lebanon Christian Church Cemetery.
   Mr. Sims died Thursday, July 24, at his residence.
   Survivors include two daughters, Brandalyn Sims New and Amy Baldwin of
Roanoke; two sons, Jimmy Richard Sims Jr. and Daniel Sims of Roanoke; three
sisters, Voncille Brown of Roanoke, Regina Sears of Auburn and Dorothy Hill of
Alex City; eight brothers, Edward Barrett of Roanoke, George Barrett of Newell,
Henry Lee Davis of Dadeville, D. Walter Sims of Haleyville, Glenn Sims and
Jessie Sims of Sylacauga, Ricky Sims of Alex City, and Waymon Sims of Gary,
Ind.; and six grandchildren.
   Pallbearers were Larry Wilson, Mike Rushing, Tim Rushing, Earles West, Kevin
Watson and Wayne Balke.
   A Randolph County native, Mr. Sims was born Oct. 1, 1949, son of Jimmy and
Thelma Barrett.  He was a Vietnam War veteran and had been self-employed as a
mechanic.  Mr. Sims was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Herman
Sims.
   Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke.

Mattie Cook 'Jackie' Smith

   (LANETT) Mattie Cook "Jackie" Smith of Lanett died at George H. Lanier
Memorial Hospital in Valley on Thursday, July 24, 2003.
   Graveside services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, at Oakwood
Cemetery in Lanett with the Rev. Jimmy Alsobrook officiating.
   Mrs. Smith is survived by a daughter, Brenda Vaughn of Woodland; a son,
Monroe Smith of Lanett; four grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
   Born in Harris County, Ga., on June 21, 1917, Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and
had been active in the First Baptist Church of Lanett.  She was retired from the
former Playtex Corp. in LaFayette with more than 20 years of service.  After
retirement, she did voluntary work at the Lanett Geriatric Center.  She was the
daughter of the late Sarah Birdie Steward Cook and the late James Monroe Cook.
   In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to
Chattahoochee Hospice of Valley or a favorite charity.

Rose Ellen Melton Craven

   (WOODLAND) Services for Rose Ellen Melton Craven, 60, of Woodland were
Thursday, July 24, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Hope Memorial Christian Church, Wadley,
with the Rev. Bobby Burroughs and Bro. Edward Herren officiating.  Burial was at
Forrester Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
   Ms. Craven died in Selma.
   Survivors include five sisters, Retha Cox of Kansas, Sylvia Herren of
Woodland, Janet Smith of Wedowee, Melinda Boyd of Talladega, and Georgia Ann
Wood of Atlanta, Texas; and five brothers, J. V. Melton and Gary Melton of
Wadley, Fred Melton of Valley, Larry Melton of Talladega, and Bruce Melton.
   A Randolph County native, Ms. Craven was born Oct. 4, 1942, daughter of
Andrew Jackson and Millie Jane McDonald Melton.  She was a member of Hope
Memorial Christian Church and had worked as a seamstress.  Ms. Craven was
preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Louise Melton; and a brother, Donald
Melton.
   Pallbearers were John Melton, Jay Herren, Anthony Boyd, Joey Puckett, Chris
Melton, Ricky Herren and Keith Boyd.
   Arrangements were by Benefield Funeral Home, Wedowee.

Billy Alsabrook

   (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Billy Alsabrook, 73, of LaGrange, Ga., died Sunday, July 27,
2003, at Hospice LaGrange.
   Mr. Alsabrook, born June 23, 1930, in Randolph County, Ala., was the son of
the late Eddie B. and Ruby Brown Alsabrook.  He had lived in LaGrange for the
passed 47 years, and in 1972, he and his sons began Alsabrook Logging Company,
retiring in 1992 as president and founder. Mr. Alsabrook attended New Hope
Baptist Church in Heard County, Ga.
   Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary Holloway Alsabrook; a daughter,
Sandra Sawyer; two sons, Mike Alsabrook and Charles Alsabrook; a granddaughter
and four grandsons; a brother, Fred Alsabrook of LaGrange; four sisters, Nell
Willingham of LaGrange, June Perry and Carolyn Frank, both of Roanoke and Doris
Colley of Lanett; several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his
parents and a son, Larry Alsabrook.
   Funeral services were Tues., July 29, at 11 a.m. from the Chapel
Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with the Revs. Darrell Scott and Gary Baldwin
officiating.  Burial was in Meadoway Gardens Cemetery.
   Arrangements were by Striffler-Hamby Mortuary, LaGrange.

Herbert Godwin Anderson Jr.

   (HOLMES BEACH, Fla.) Dr. Herbert Godwin Anderson Jr., 71, of Holmes Beach,
Fla., died July 16, 2003, at his residence.
   The Griffith-Cline Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.  A memorial
service will be held at a later date.
   Dr. Anderson was born in Roanoke on Dec. 29, 1931, to parents Herbert and
Ethel Blanche Anderson.  He served in the Navy and was a Korean veteran.  After
receiving an undergraduate degree from Auburn University, he graduated from the
University of Miami in 1965 with a Ph.D. degree in marine biology.  He was
scientifically recognized for using parasites of marine fish to help identify
geographical groups of bluefish along the Atlantic coast of the United States.
   He was professor of biological science of Central Connecticut State
University from 1964 to 1989 and was named professor emeritus upon his
retirement when he moved to Holmes Beach.
   He held membership in the Scientific Research Society of North America, the
American Society of Parashologists and was listed in the Marquis Who's Who in
America 2003.
   Survivors include his brother, Robert Anderson, and sister-in-law, Sara, of
Ruskin, Fla.; three nephews; and a long-time friend, Arthur Ballman, who resides
at Holmes Beach.
   Arrangements were by Griffith-Cline Funeral Home, Holmes Beach.

Dovard Aikens

   (MILLTOWN) Dovard Aikens, 79, of Milltown died Monday, July 28, 2003 at
George H. Lanier Hospital in Valley.
   Services will be at Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette, at 2 p.m. on
Thursday, July 31, with interment in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Lanett.  The
Rev. Clifford DeLee and the Rev. John Cole will officiate.
   Surviving are his mother, Eunice Aikens of Wadley; six children, Sonja Baker
and Dale Bradford of Roanoke, George Edward Aikens and Joan Scott of Valley,
Margarette Lambert of Campbell Hall, N.Y., and Angie Conner of Tallassee; five
sisters, Lonida Brooks of Valley, Ruth Davis of LaFayette, Lorene Milner of
Milltown, and Faye Blackmon and Emma Blanks of Wadley; four brothers, Frank
Aikens of Valley, Billy Aikens and Rev. Floyd Aikens of Lanett, and Cleave
Aikens of Abanda; 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
   Visitation will be at the funeral home Wed. from 6 to 8 p.m.
   Mr. Aikens was born in Langdale on March 21, 1924.  He was a World War II
veteran and was retired from West Point Pepperell's Lanett Mill after 40 years
of service.  He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church of LaFayette.  He was
preceded in death by his wife, Mary George Aikens, and a son, Jimmy Aikens.
