David Taft officiating.  Burial was at Randolph Memory Gardens.    Mr. Taft died Friday, Aug. 1, at Traylor Nursing Home.    Survivors include two daughters, Judy House of Roanoke and Brenda Barnett of Sylacauga; two sons, Waymon Taft and Billy Ray Taft of Roanoke; two brothers, Fred Taft f [sic - of] Roanoke and Charles Taft of Rock Mills; five granddaughters; two grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.    Pallbearers were George Cauthen, Greg Pennington, Jerry Wayne Gay, Steven Taft, Barry Daniel and Bobby Ward.  Members of the Roanoke Fire Department served as honorary pallbearers.    A lifelong Randolph County resident, Mr. Taft was born May 2, 1920, son of Will and Ella Huey Taft.  He was a World War II Army veteran and had been employed with Handley Mills.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice Taft, and a grandson, Robbie Taft.    Arrangements were by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke. __________ Velma Marie Lane    (WEDOWEE) Velma Marie Lane, 36, of 110 County Road 8921, Wedowee, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at East Alabama Medical Center, Opelika.    Services were Saturday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. at Pine Flat Primitive Baptist Church, Wedowee, with Elder Thomas Knight officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.    Survivors include a son, Emmanuel Hines of Wedowee; her common law husband, Jerry Hines of Wedowee; her father, Willie B. Brown of Goodwater; a brother, Norris Lane of Carrollton, Ala.; and two sisters, Janie Robertson of Gadsden and Terri Sims of Wedowee.  She was preceded in death by her mother, Sarah Brown.    Arrangements were by Clark Memorial Funeral Service, Roanoke. __________ Roy W. Van Holm    (VSLPSTSIDO, Ind.) Roy W. Van Holm, 81, of Valparaiso, Ind., formerly of Wedowee and Burbank, Calif., died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, in Valparaiso.    He was born Dec. 9, 1921, in Oconto, Wis., son of Anton and Agnes Van Holm. He was a graduate of Burbank High School in Burbank, Calif., a World War II Navy veteran, and a retired tool maker.    On July 18, 1954, in Las Vegas, he married Lola Donley, who preceded him in death in 2000.  He is survived by a son, Brian Van Holm of Roswell, Ga.; a daughter, Robbin Benacka of Valparaiso; a stepson, Gary Meyers of Burbank, Calif.; a sister, Dolores Tabb of Burbank; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  He was preceded by his parents, wife, and stepdaughter, Karen Barnhart.    Following cremation at Angelcrest Crematory in Valparaiso, private family services will be held. __________ Brenda 'Sharon' George    (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Brenda "Sharon" George, 48, of LaGrange, Ga., died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at her home.    Mrs. George, born Jan. 12, 1955, in Newnan, Ga., was the daughter of Howard and Mable Stitcher Gaddy.  She was assistant manger [sic] and waitress at McGuire's Restaurant in Pine Mountain, Ga.  She was a member of County Line Baptist Church.    Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband of 25 years, William H. George Sr.; six children, Tammy George, Melissa James, Howard George Jr., all of LaGrange, Dee Dee Buttrum of Ragland, Ala., Amber Perry of Roanoke, Ala., and Joey Dyes of Atlanta; 12 grandchildren; two sisters, Judy McFarlin and Janet Ivey, and a brother, Tony Norton, all of Newnan; several nieces and nephews.    Funeral services were Sunday, Aug. 3, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with the Rev. Lamar Truitt officiating.  Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens.    Flowers will be accepted or those desiring may contribute to Hospice LaGrange at 1510 Vernon Rd. in LaGrange. __________ Annie Lucille Crawford    (ASHLAND) Services for Annie Lucille Crawford, 87, of Ashland were Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. at Sardis Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Gene Young, Coy Powell and Rev. Steve Dyess officiating.  Burial was in the church cemetery.    Mrs. Crawford died Saturday, Aug. 2, at Clay County Nursing Home.    Survivors include four daughters, Frances Brand, Katie McCain and Polly Bachman, all of Ashland, and Debra Jordan of Cragford; six sons, James Crawford and Jimmy Crawford, both of Ashland, Terry Crawford of Millersville, Robert Crawford of Hackneyville, Joe Crawford of Cragford and Roger Crawford of Wadley; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.    Active and honorary pallbearers were grandsons.    Mrs. Crawford was a native and lifelong resident of Clay County.  She was retired from Clay County Nursing Home and was a member of Sardis Baptist Church. H. L. Jones officiating.  Interment was at Canaan Baptist Church Cemetery, Welch.    Surviving are her ten children, Jesse James Hooks of Hartford, Conn., Alice Trammell[,] Stanley Hooks, Irene Roundtree and Hattie Brooks of Five Points, Lemerle Gunn and Gwendolyn Hooks of Detroit, Mich., Jessie Mae Griffin and Ronnie Hooks of Fredonia, and Sheila Higgins of Milltown; 29 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.    Born July 1, 1923, in Chambers County, Mrs. Hooks was an only child.  She was married to the late James Henry Hooks for 51 years, and they had 11 children. One child, Willie Howard Hooks, preceded her in death.  Mrs. Hooks had been an active member of Canaan Baptist Church and later Rehope Baptist Church.  She held many positions in the church over the years, but her true gift was hospitality which was obvious in her church, community and home.    Arrangements were by Vines Funeral Home, LaFayette. __________ Betty Frances Bunn    (ALABASTER) Services for Betty Frances Bunn of Alabaster were Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at 3:30 p.m. at Ridout's Southern Heritage Chapel in Birmingham.  Burial was in Clay County Memory Gardens.    Miss Bunn died Wednesday, July 30.    Survivors include two sisters, Barbara Jane Blake of Nettleton, Miss., and Carol Sue Bunn of Alabaster; five brothers, Max Bunn of New Almaden, Calif., Joel Bunn and Roy Bunn, both of Wedowee, Arthur Bunn of Oxford and Dwight Bunn of Florence; and a host of nieces and nephews.    Miss Bunn, a graduate of Randolph County High School and the University of Alabama in Birmingham, was a member of Living Word Church of Pelham.  She was employed in the escrow department of Compass Bank.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Bunn. __________ Elizabeth Adel Moon    (VALLEY) Elizabeth Adel Moon of Valley died Sunday evening, Aug. 3, 2003, at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital in Valley.    Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley with the Revs. Dirk Steenbergen and Don Sailor officiating.  Burial will follow in Resthaven Cemetery.    Mrs. Moon leaves behind a host of beloved family members and loyal friends. Bearden officiating.  Burial will follow at Forest Home Christian Church Cemetery.    The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday.    Ms. Ragan died Monday, Aug. 11, at Bethany House in Auburn.    Survivors include her mother and stepfather, Peggy and Billy Ray Taft of Roanoke; a son, Kyle Ragan of Wedowee; her grandparents, Rachel Pinkard of Roanoke and Edward Ward of Orlando, Fla.; and three brothers, Kevin E. Vickie McCormick, 47, of LaGrange, Ga., died Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003, at the Medical Center in Columbus, Ga.    Mrs. McCormick, born March 8, 1956, in LaGrange, was the daughter of Reuben Dorsey and Sara Boyd Rogers.  A lifelong resident of LaGrange, was the relief manager for the Waffle House in LaGrange.  She was Baptist by faith.    Survivors include her husband, Lee McCormick of LaGrange; four children, Chris Rogers, Niki McCormick, Jimmy Lee Marrow and Tammy Rogers, all of LaGrange; her mother, Sara Critcher Satterfield of Roanoke; two sisters, Linda Walker of Roanoke and Deborah McCormick of LaGrange; three grandchildren; and a special friend, David Haney of LaGrange.    Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at the chapel of Striffler-Hamby Mortuary with burial in Shadowlawn Cemetery.  The Rev. Evelyn Whatley of Alexandria; three brothers, John David Turley of Blue Mountain and Ralph Duke Turley Sr. and R. C. Turley, both of Oxford; a grandchild; a great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.    Mr. Turley, a Randolph County native and longtime Oxford resident, owned Bill Turley's Barber Shop.  He was a World War II Navy veteran.  He had served as assistant pastor of Sunny Eve Baptist Church.    He was preceded in death by three sons, Billy Mack Turley, Larry Junior Turley and Johnny Lee Turley; his parents, Auther and Claris Turley; four sisters, Clara Pettus Birmingham, Annie Vena Horton, Lena Mae Butcher and Eva Lois Moore; and a brother, Auther Euell Turley. __________ Martha Lee Burdette    (ROANOKE) Services for Martha Lee Burdette, 66, of Roanoke will be Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Whitson officiating.  Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery.  Ms. Burdette will lie in state at the church for one hour prior to services.    Ms. Burdett died Sunday, Aug. 10, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika.    Survivors include her mother, Verna Lee Burdette of Roanoke; four sisters, Melberlene B. Webb of Montgomery, Evelyn B. Atlanta, GA 30329).    A lifelong resident of this area, Ms. Burdette was born Oct. 9, 1936, in Chambers County, daughter of William Manning and Verna Lee Hill Burdette.  She had been an administrative assistant with the Farm Service Agency and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.    Arrangements are by Quattlebaum Funeral Home, Roanoke. __________ James Allen 'Al' Morris    (HUNTSVILLE) James Allen "Al" Morris, 74, died Friday, Aug. 8, 2003.    Mr. Allen was born and raised in Vienne, Ga., attended Georgia Military Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy (Class of '50) and earned a BSME from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  He was a professional engineer, associate fellow, and had many achievements and papers, including being selected as a Community Leader in America in 1968.  He served as test engineer for U.S. Naval Experiment Station in Maryland, project engineer for Ford Scientific Lab, instructor at Tennessee A&I State University, staff project engineer at Arnold Engineering Development Center near Manchester, Tenn., department manager at PRC, senior project engineer at SCI Inc., and finally retiring as a senior staff systems engineer at SAIC in Huntsville.  He was an active member of the Weatherly Heights Baptist Church, Huntsville, where he served as a Sunday school teacher for 10 years.  He enjoyed flying, vacationing and "tinkering."    He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Annabel Trapp Morris; a sister, Mary Clara Player of Fairburn, Ga.; a brother, Clyde C. Morris of Fernandina Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Morris Meigs of Huntsville; two sons, James "Jim" Morris Jr. of Wedowee and Glen Perry Morris of Huntsville; five grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.    No funeral service is planned.  A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date.  Donations may be made to his memory to Brindlee Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, 4434 Hwy. 231, Union Grove, AL 35175. __________ Wade Wright Jr.    (ROANOKE) Bishop Wade Wright Jr., 76, of Roanoke died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at his residence.    Bishop Wright was pastor and overseer of East Roanoke Pure Holiness Church of God for 34 years.  During his ministry, he did the work of an evangelist in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Ohio and Illinois and planted churches in Valdosta, Ga., Greenville, Ga., and Mayo, Fla.  For many years, his ministry was broadcast weekly over radio station WELR FM of Roanoke and TV 33 of LaGrange, Ga.    Survivors include three sons Elishia Wright of Atlanta, Ga., minister Timothy Wright of Lithia Springs, Ga., and Rodney Wright of Roanoke; two daughters, Catherine Hines of Roanoke and Barbara Wright of LaGrange; one sister, Rheunette Ridley of Bronx, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.    Services were Saturday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at East Roanoke Pure Holiness Church of God, with minister Timothy Wright officiating.  Interment was in Skyview Memorial Gardens, Welch.  Bishop Wright was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Nora B. Wright.    Arrangements were by Silmon & Son Funeral Services, Roanoke. __________ Myron Calvin Milford    (KINGSPORT, Tenn.) Myron Calvin Milford sr., 93, of Kingsport, Tenn., formerly of Five Points, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003.    Services will be Wednesday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. at Jeff Jones Funeral Home in LaFayette, with the Rev. Bob Karcher and the Rev. Bill Hand officiating.  Burial will follow in LaFayette City Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Dave Bowers, Leonard Brown, Cecil Crenshaw, Mike Hand, Tom Milford Jr. and James Tucker.    Mr. Milford was a lifelong resident of Chambers County, born Sept. 11, 1909 in Lanett to the late Leon Alvin Milford and Mary Arnett Argent Milford.  He attended school in Lanett until his family moved to the Ridge Grove community in the early 1920s, where he attended Ridge Grove School.  He was baptized at County Line Baptist Church, where he and his family were members for a number of years.    He went to work for Harrell Huguley Motor Company in LaFayette in 1929 and opened his own business, Milford's Auto Parts, in LaFayette in 1938.  He was the Oldsmobile and Case tractor dealer in LaFayette for many years.  In the late 1950s, he retired from the automobile business and was a timber and cattle farmer until 1999.  He married Juanita McWaters Dvorak in 1961, and they moved to Five Points, where they resided until 2002.  Since July 2002, he had made his home in a retirement community in Kingsport, Tenn.  He was a member and deacon of Five Points Baptist Church.    Survivors include his wife, Juanita M. Milford of Kingsport; his son, Calvin Milford of LaFayette; his stepdaughter, Lynne Bowers of Kingsport; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Eleanor Milford Meade of Birmingham; and one brother, Tom Milford Sr. of Mobile.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Willard Milford Lehner of Richmond, Va.    Arrangements are by Jeff Jones Funeral Home, LaFayette. __________ Maurece R. Alma Foster Huff, 82, of Dacula, Ga., formerly of Lawrenceville, Ga., died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003.    She is survived by a daughter, Candace Curtis of Dacula; one grandson; two step-grandsons; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.    Mrs. Huff, a U.S. Army veteran who served at the Pentagon, was a native of northern Chambers County.  She was a long-time member of Oglethorpe Presbyterian Church before joining Fairview Presbyterian Church.  She retired from the Atlanta Coca-Cola Bottling Co., where she became personal friends with Robert Woodruff and enjoyed a 20-year relationship with the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.  She was an active volunteer with local P.T.A., Girl Scouts and community organizations.  Mrs. Huff was past Worthy Matron of the Cross Keys Chapter #494, Order of the Eastern Star and for the last 10 years was an enthusiastic volunteer with the Gwinnett Hospital System Auxiliary.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Huff.    Services were Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. at Wages Lawrenceville Chapel, with the Rev. Smith Sr.    (VALLEY) Charles P. Smith Sr., 92, of Valley died Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003 at Bill Nichols Veterans Home, Alexander City.    Surviving are his wife, Sally M. Smith; a daughter, Betty J. Mapp of Valley; two sons, Charles P. Smith Jr. of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Billy D. Smith of Wedowee; a sister, Vera Dudley of Fairfax; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.    Services were at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23, with burial in Fairfax Cemetery in Valley.  Mr. Milford Chewning officiated.    Mr. Smith was born in Clay County on Dec. 12, 1910, son of the late Ethel Melinda Grabean Smith and Charlie Walker Smith.  He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a gunner with the U.S. Navy.  He was employed as a painting contractor.  He was a longtime resident of Roanoke and was a paint foreman at Handley Manufacturing Company.  The family asks that donations be made to one's favorite charity in his memory. __________ Frances Loette Hill    (LAGRANGE, Ga.) Frances Loette Hill, 74, of LaGrange, Ga., died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003, at Hospice LaGrange.    Mrs. Hill, born Dec. 26, 1928, in Randolph County, Ala., was the daughter of the late John Clyde and Sara Frances Cummings Siggers.  She had lived in LaGrange most of her life and retired from Duracell.  She was a member of Teaver Road Baptist Church.    Survivors include four daughters, Frances Marie Lumpkin, Mary Janet Cook, Sara Ann Townsend and Connie Faye Marshall; and a son, John Henry Jr. Hill, all of LaGrange; three sisters, Lou L. Davis of Birmingham, Ioan Greene of Roanoke and Willie Mae Melton of LaGrange; two brothers, J. C. Siggers of Virginia and James Siggers of LaGrange; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Hill Sr., and a grandson, David Lumpkin.    Funeral services were at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, at Teaver Road Baptist Church with the Revs. Michael Reeves, Max McCord and Craig Marshall officiating. Butler Sr., 72, of Wedowee were Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Graham officiating.  Burial followed in Highland Cemetery with Thompson Funeral Home in charge.    Rev. Butler died Saturday, Aug. 23, at Medical Center East in Birmingham.    Survivors include his wife, Martha H. Butler; two daughters, Judy B. Little of Smiths and Karen B. Coffey of Piedmont; three sons, Michael R. Butler of Alexandria, La., Andy Butler Jr. of Wedowee and Adam T. Butler of Mobile; three sisters, Faye Hailey and Rachel Hathorne, both of Louisiana, and Louise Root of Texas; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.    Pallbearers were Bret Butler, Troy Dobbs, Paul Hulsey, Jack Little, T. P. Marbut, Jason Reeves, Brian White and Scott Woodall.  Honorary pallbearers were the Dewey Ryan Sunday School Class of Hokes Bluff United Methodist Church.    The Rev. Butler was a native of Jena, La., and a longtime resident of Piedmont.  He was a retired minister and a member of the North Alabama United Methodist District Conference with 35 years of service.  He was [a] Navy veteran and served in the Korean conflict.    He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melanie Butler; a granddaughter, Diana Butler; and his parents, T. R. Butler and Susie Seaton.    Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Grove United Methodist Church, 957 State Lake Rd., Lineville, AL 36266. __________ Bertye Mae Brooks Akins    (HEFLIN) Services for Bertye Mae Brooks Akins, 91, of Heflin were Sunday, Aug. 24, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Beason Grove Baptist Church with Dryden Funeral Home in charge.  Burial was in Beason Grove Cemetery.    Mrs. Akins died Friday, Aug. 22, at Regional Medical Center in Anniston.    Survivors include six daughters, Mozell Wells of Douglasville, Ga., Mattie Overton of Roanoke, Lucille Richardson of Woodland, Mary Craft of Newell, Margaret Holloway of Wedowee and Nell McIntosh of Waco, Ga.; three sons, Monroe Brooks of Ohatchee, Loyd Akins of Lanett and Edward Akins of Wedowee; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.    Pallbearers were Randall Akins, Jody Overton, Buddy Richardson, Brandon Sims, Frankie Stephens and Johnny Stephens.    Mrs. Akins, a native of Randolph County, lived in Cleburne County most of her life.  She was the oldest charter member of Beason Grove Baptist Church.    Mrs. Akins was preceded in death by her husbands, John Henry Brooks and Garfield Akins; and three children, Claudine Allen, Merrill Brooks and James Akins. __________ Harold Fred Williams    (OHATCHEE) Memorial services for Harold Fred Williams, 56, of Ohatchee were Saturday, Aug. 23, 2003, at K. L. Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Center Community Room.    Mr. Williams died Thursday, Aug. 21, at his home.    Survivors include two sisters, Deborah Williams of Marion, Miss., and Skyla Wilson of Virginia; two brothers, Grover Webb Williams of Tampa, Fla., and Rod Williams of Anniston; two nieces and three nephews.    Mr. Williams, a Roanoke native, had lived in Calhoun County since 1966.  He was preceded in death by his parents, James Fred and Mary Lou Webb Williams. __________ Ralph Sims    (LANETT) Ralph Sims, 76, of Lanett died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at the Care Center of Opelika.    Funeral services were Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 4 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley.  Burial followed in Resthaven Cemetery.    Mr. Sims is survived by his wife, CariLena S. Sims; three daughters, Elaine Rhodes of Opelika, Carol Longshore of Hazel Green and Cathy Humphrey of Valley; four grandchildren; two brothers-in-law; a sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.    Born Feb. 20, 1927, in Randolph County, Mr. Sims was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy during World War II.  He was a retired employee of the City of Lanett, with 15 years of service.  Mr. Sims was of the Baptist faith.  He was preceded in death by his sons, Jim Hall and J.
