His death resulted from his being shot with a rifle by a young Negro tenant farmer, James Sterling, who afterward gave himself up to Sheriff T. G. Kirby. The incident occurred at Coles Old Mill in the northern part of the county. Mr. Camp was 61 years old and a native of Randolph County. He was the son of the late Mr. C. D. Camp and Mrs. Missouri Bowen Camp. He was a successful farmer and merchant of the Morrisons Crossroads community and was very active in political and community life. Mr. Camp was a Mason and a member of the Baptist Church. Funeral services were held from the Antioch Church at 2 o'clock. Friday, April 14. The Reverends B. W. Mathews and Monroe Wiggins were the officiating ministers. The active pallbearers were Grover Payne, Warren Meadows, Tom Hester, Shell Reaves, Hand-ley Lovvorn, and Jesse Nelson. Interment was in the church cemetery under the direction of Quattlebaum's Funeral Home. Mr. Camp is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mabelle Payne Camp; six daughters: Mrs. J. O. Chaffin of Piedmont, Ala., Mrs. G. M. Chaffin of LaGrange, Mrs. Woodrow McLeod of Newell, Mrs. Robert C. Cofield of Anniston, Mrs. A. B. Hollingsworth of Auburn, and Mrs. Rudolph Haynes of Newell; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, W. J. Camp of Bowdon, Ga: and one sister, Mrs. Johnny Johnston of Newell. A second sister, Mrs. Joe Dennis of Eclectic, died suddenly of a heart attack Thursday day afternoon.
