The shooting occurred near the Roanoke Wholesale Grocery Co. It is reported that Heath went home for his shotgun after the two Negroes had been in an argument earlier in the morning. Heath was employed by the city at the cemetery, and Cox was employed by Schuessler and Co. Cox, shot through the head and chest, died instantly.
