WEDOWEE, Ala., March 19 Kinley Freeman, 28, and his brother, Lumie, 34, were being held in the county jail here today in connection with investigation of the fatal shooting of Crawford Haynes Dye, 24, last Friday near the Dye home, according to Deputy Sheriff P. O. Webb. The deputy sheriff said Dye, father of two children, was ambushed and shot twice with a shotgun as he rode in a wagon along a road near his home. The county officer said he took Kinley and Lumie Freeman into custody later near the home of a relative and both men were carrying shotguns. Kinley Freeman, the deputy said, admitted under questioning that he had fired one charge from his shotgun at Dye, who owned the farm next to him. Lumie Freeman, the officer said, has steadfastly denied any connection with the shooting. Deputy Webb said his investigation has disclosed the difficulty between Kinley Freeman and the shooting victim had arisen over the moving of some landmark posts by Kinley. Dye is reported to have charged Kinley with moving the posts, the officer said, and Kinley in turn is reported to have demanded that Dye retract any statements he had made about the posts having been moved. A warrant charging Kinley with first degree murder has been obtained, Webb said, and Lumie Freeman is being held pending further investigation of the shooting. The funeral for Dye was held last Saturday at Wedowee, the deputy sheriff said. April 6: Lummie Freeman, charged with being implicated in the murder of Bud Dye a few days ago, was given a preliminary hearing in county court last Saturday. His bond was fixed at $2,000. His brother, McKinley Freeman, charged with murder in the same case, waived hearing and is being held without bond to await action of the grand jury. It is charged by the state that these men way-laid and shot Dye to death near his home in the Napoleon community. Additional Comments: McKinley Freeman was charged and convicted of the murder to Crawford H. Dye and sent to prison.
