"Bill" Elliott was found dead in his home Thursday afternoon from a gunshot wound to the chest Investigators said Elliott was killed between 1:30 pm and 2 pm and was found by members of the family. Elliott a construction operator who owned Bill Elliott Ditching Co was apparently cleaning some shotguns in the kitchen. A note on the refrigerator read "Gone Dove Hunting" His body has been taken to the state crime lab in Auburn for excardination and foul play has not been ruled out. State and county authorities are investigating the death Elliott who had sought the office of sheriff four years ago ran a strong second during this year’s primary and was defeated by only 144 votes in the Sept 26 runoff by four-term incumbent Charlie Will Thompson. A post-election investigation into complaints of vote buying during the runoff have been rumored to involve both candidates.
