ALGenWeb Archives File Manager Carolyn Golowka, -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submitted by William Fischer, Jr., February 2001 MRS. L. E. MANN IS CALLED AWAY ------------------------ Mrs. Lola E. [Estelle HANDLEY] MANN [22 Feb 1864--20 Oct 1919] passed from this life at 7 o'clock Monday morning at the residence of Mr. W. W. [Warren Wayne] PITTMAN [11 Jun 1851--16 Sep 1940] and W. H. MANN, this city. She was taken seriously ill at her country home, Fernwood, at Malone, and was brought to Roanoke one week ago. From the character of her illness little hope [w]as entertained for her recovery, though all efforts possible were made to restore her to her family and friends. The end came early Monday morning, with her son, Mr. William Handley MANN [29 Jul 1883--11 Aug 1959], her daughter, Mrs. Kenneth WILLIAMS [Agnes MANN], Mr. WILLIAMS [18 Oct 1892--18 Jun 1929], G. [Guy] H. HANDLEY [24 Feb 1866--27 Apr 1937], her only brother, and other members of the family in attendance. Mrs. MANN was the only daughter of the late Captain and Mrs. William A. HANDLEY [15 Dec 1834--23 Jun 1909; wife Adelia A. HANDLEY, 13 Jun 1842--27 Apr 1910] and was fifty-five years of age. Thus she had been prominently identified with the history of Roanoke from its early days. She was a gracious, sweet-spirited woman and drew many friends to her. Eight years ago Mrs. MANN suffered the loss of her gifted husband, Mr. J. E. [James Edwin] MANN [27 Jun 1856--10 Sep 1911]. Previous to that they had lost two small children [Annie Eloise MANN, 2 Oct 1891--5 Jan 1894, and an infant son]. In late years her aged parents had died. Thus one by one the lights went out along the pathway of her life. Yet she remained cheerful, gentle and hopeful all the way. Now that the fitful voyage is over, she has entered into rest. Enclosed in a handsome casket, with much of the beauty of youth yet lingering on her face, her tired form was lowered to its final rest in the family lot in the Roanoke cemetery [Cedarwood] at 3 o'clock Tuesday [21 Oct 1919] afternoon, after services conducted by the pastor, assisted by others, at the Methodist church, of which the deceased was a member. Many friends were present to pay their respects, with floral offerings embowering the altar place. [From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 22 Oct 1919, p.1]
