Jimmie French, minister of Congregational Christian church drowned after a boat sank from which he was fertilizing a fishpond and overturned and sank in 10 feet or more of water. The Tragic accident occurred last Friday afternoon about 3:30 at the pond of John Harmon, Mr. French's brother-in-law, north of Wedowee. Mr. Harmon was able to swim to safety, but Mr. French went down. Six boats dragged the lake, but the body was not recovered until about 7:15. Mr. French was 48 years of age and was a ministerial student at Southern Union College while serving churches in this area. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Velma Moore French; two sons, Gerson of Wedowee and Jim Tom of Atlanta; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert French of Wedowee; one grandchild; four brothers: Larkin and Floyd of Roanoke, Alton of Wedowee, and Rev. Joe French of Lanett; four sisters: Mrs. Odie Daniel of Cullman and Mrs. Lewis McManus, Mrs. Jack Benefield, and Mrs. John Harmon, all of Wedowee. Funeral services were held at Noon Day Congregational Christian Church on Sunday afternoon at one o'clock, conducted by the Rev. John Dollar and the Rev. Clyde Flannery. Sawyer Masonic Lodge of Wedowee held the graveside service. Interment was in the Ava cemetery, with Quattlebaum's Funeral Home directing.
