Roanoke Leader
Funeral services for R. E. (Ervin) Hand, 47, were held from the Gold Ridge 
Baptist Church on Tuesday afternoon, May 27, at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. J. O. Gay 
officiated, assisted by Rev. G. G. Gravett, Rev. G. G. Akins, and Rev. W. H. 
Caldwell. Interment was in Gold Ridge cemetery, Roanoke Funeral Home directing. 
Pallbearers were taxi-operator friends of the deceased: E. W. Knight, Tom Smith, 
Britt Farr, Jess Swann, Claude Crowder, J. H. Bailey, Arnie Brown, Ford Cottle, 
Arthur Siggers, Howard Taylor, and Manley Freeman. Honorary pallbearers were all 
his friends and neighbors. Only two cabs remained in operation in Roanoke during 
the hours of the funeral, it is reported. Except for two private cars, only 
taxis were in the automobile funeral procession. They carried passengers without 
charge. Mr. Hand is survived by his wife, Mrs. Leava Hand, two sons, Robert L. 
and Osvald Hand, and one daughter, Mrs. Edith George, all of Roanoke; three 
brothers: Melvin Hand, of Birmingham, Lowell Hand, of Columbus, Ga., and Duell 
Hand, of Bowdon, Ga., Rt. 3: two sisters, Mrs. Esther Maddox, of Cullman, and 
Mrs. Flossie Sexton, of Ranburne; his mother, Mrs. Fannie Hand, of Bowdon, Ga., 
Rt. 3; and a large number of other near relatives. Ervin Hand had been a member 
of the Baptist Church since early youth. A strong believer in the Golden Rule, 
he was known for his generosity and helpfulness to his customers, friends, and 
neighbors. Before entering the taxi business, he was employed by the Goodall Co. 
in Roanoke.
