An eminent surgeon and physician, he was a native of LaFayette, Ala., and had family roots and relatives in Randolph County. His father, the late Morse Haynes, was superintendent of Chambers County schools for many years. Dr. Haynes practiced privately in Opelika since 1968 and during the same period of time served as chief of surgical services at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta. More recently, also in Atlanta, he became professor of surgery at Emory University Hospital in the School of Medicine. Indicative of the national recognition he attained were his selection in 1984 to receive the National Meritorious Trauma Award from the American College of Surgeons and his appointment to serve on the 36-member Examining Board of the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Haynes is survived by his wife, Mrs. Dena Huguley Haynes; two daughters, Dallis Haynes Howard and Lisa Haynes Horsley; one son, Columbus Doyle Haynes Jr.; his mother, Mrs. Beulah Holmes Hayes; and two sisters, Rowena Haynes Bolland and Ann Haynes Waid. Funeral services were conducted at 1:00 o'clock Monday afternoon at Opelika First Baptist Church, with interment in LaFayette Cemetery.
