W. Carlisle, near the Roanoke High School building. Investigation showed that he had been shot through the body with a small rifle. Death had evidently occurred in the early part of Sunday night. A jury was empaneled, and an investigation was started, with Justice O. L. Mullendore presiding. The evidence tended to show that there had been a gathering in the servant house back of the Carlisle residence, at which gambling and drinking were indulged in, and that a quarrel arose, resulting in the killing. In the conclusion of the investigation Ed Freeman, a young negro man of the city, was bound over to await the action of the grand jury without bond. The woman who lived in the house where the trouble occurred was held as a material witness. Bond was set at $500, and failing to make this, the woman was carried to jail in Wedowee, where Freeman was lodged to await the action of the courts. Era Whitehead was also held as a material witness. Her bond was $100 and this was made. Additional Comments: Ed Freeman was sent to prison for Murder.
