His first visit was to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John M. TUCKER, when the latter's father, Mr. James D. [Dowdle?] SMITH, was summoned to the beyond. Mr. SMITH was 53 years of age and had spent most of his life in Chambers county. He had been ill for a long time. He leaves a widow [Mary GRIFFIN?] and two married daughters. The interment was in Cedarwood [cemetery] Thursday [18 May], after services conducted by the pastor of the deceased, Rev. S. L. DOBBS. The same day Mrs. H. B. KITCHENS died at her home three miles south of town and was buried at Antioch Thursday. She leaves a husband and several children, among the latter being O. D. KITCHENS, of this place [Roanoke]. Thursday afternoon a shocking misfortune befell the home of Mr. J. R. TIDWELL, the popular local agent of the A. B. & A. [Atlanta, Birmingham, & Atlantic] railroad. His little son, James Robert, Jr. [26 Oct 1909--16 May 1911], was playing under the house and struck a match, which quickly ignited his clothing, and before help could reach him his body and limbs were so badly burned that death relieved the little one of his sufferings about thirty-six hours later. In her heroic efforts to save her child Mrs. [Annie M.] TIDWELL's hands were severly burned. The remains of the little fellow were borne to the Baptist church Saturday afternoon, where touching services were conducted by Rev. S. L. DOBBS, assisted by Revs. W. J. LAYTON and T. J. PORTER. The interment was in Cedarwood. ------------------------- A CARD ------------------------- During the long and fatal illness of our loved one, Mr. J. D. SMITH, so many neighbors and friends showed us such great kindness that it is impossible to thank them all in person, so we adopt this method of expressing our gratitude. To Dr. and Mrs. J. T. STRIPLIN, to Brother DOBBS and to the Woodmen we feel under special obligations. We shall ever remember these kindnesses gratefully. Mrs. James D. SMITH [Mary GRIFFIN?] Mr. and Mrs. J. M. [John Marion?] TUCKER ------------------------- A CARD ------------------------- We most heartily thank all our friends, relatives and physicians for the constant care and kindness shown us in the long and fatal illness of wife and mother. We assure you we will never forget you. H. B. KITCHENS and Children ------------------------- A CARD ------------------------- We beg our friends, neighbors and physicians to accept this imperfect acknowledgement of our great debt of gratitude to them for their sympathy and assistance rendered us in our recent great sorrow. We would make special mention of Mr. and Mrs. NICHOLS and Mrs. FIRKINS. Sincerely, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. TIDWELL [All from The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 24 May 1911, p.1]
