J. R. USSERY ----------------------- After many months of intense suffering and patient waiting, death came early last Saturday morning to release from the infirmities of the flesh Mr. John R. USSERY [8 Oct 1859--11 Jan 1919]. Last summer he was brought in an invalid condition from Columbus [GA?] and comfortably quartered, with his wife and little daughter, Dorothy, in a residence on White Street belonging to the former's brother, Mr. W. F. [William Faulkner] USSERY [23 Dec 1851--19 Jan 1930], who has been most generous and attentive to the unfortunate man and his family during all these months. The wife also, with what aid the daughter could give, has done a heroic part by her husband in his long and hopeless illness. Neighbors and friends also did what they could to make comfortable his last days. Sunday morning at 11 o'clock the remains were borne to the Baptist church, where appropriate services were conducted by the pastor, Dr. RUCKER. The interment was made in the [Cedarwood] cemetery of this city [Roanoke]. Mr. USSERY was reared in this county, being a member of one of Randolph's most prominent families. His many good traits drew to him a large number of friends, who regret his departure from life and loved ones. [From The Roanoke Leader (Randolph County, Alabama), 15 Jan 1919, p.1]
