V. Benefield. James Burroughs, who claimed the shooting in self-defense, said that Lee had been drinking and that he had threatened his wife and daughter with a knife and had started looking for him. The shotgun blast went into Lee's head. After the shooting, Burroughs gave himself up to Constable Benefield and was taken to the Roanoke jail, where he was held for Sheriff T. G. Kirby. Lees funeral was held Monday. In the murder of Jim Tom Lee, Jim Burrow was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 5 years.
