Anniston Star
Marion Whitaker Mathews of Newell, Rt. 1. died Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock 
at a Roanoke hospital. He was a native of Heard, Ga. He is the father of Willie 
Mathews, Miss Mattie Lou Mathews and Mrs. Nellie Rochester of Anniston. Funeral 
services were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Union Baptist Church with 
the Rev. Monroe Wiggins and John Wilder officiating. Burial was in the church 
cemetery. Mr. Mathews is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy D. Mathews of Newell; 
five sons, Millard Mathews of Trion, Ga., Willie of Anniston, Roy Mathews of 
Tampa, Fla.; Lewie Mathews of Wadowee and Jay Mathews of West Point, Ga., four 
daughters. Mrs. Rochester and Miss Mattie Lou Mathews of Anniston, Mrs. Ozetta 
Evans of Newell and Mrs. J. P. Rollins of Wedowee 33 grandchildren; eight greet 
grandchildren, one brother Ellis Mathews of Wedowee and four sisters. Mrs. Sam 
Stewart of Newell Miss Dosia Mathews of Wedowee, Mrs. Minnie Lee Carpenter of 
West Point, Ga., and Mrs. Fanny Lou Bowen.
