Funeral services were held Monday at 2 p.m. at Wedowee Baptist Church with the pastor, the Rev. Hal Jacks and the Rev Hillard Vance officiating. Burial followed in the Wedowee Masonic Cemetery with Quattlebaum Brown Service Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Active pallbearers were deacons of Wedowee Baptist Church, Tom Seegar, Lewi Wilson, Roy Hester. Honorary pallbearers were W. Jackson, C. Lumpkin, Jr., Belmont Pearson, Sammy Carpenter. Da Williamson, Dr. Willis Israel, Bobby Wheeler, and the Rev. R. C. Kinnaire. Survivors include his wife Mrs. Effie Haynes Mathews; a son, Jesse Mathews of Warner-Robins, Ga. three sisters, Miss Docia Mathews of Wedowee, Mrs. Minnie Lee Carpenter of West Point, Ga., and Mrs. Sam Stewart of Newell; and two grandchildren. He was widely known singer and choir member of the Wedowee Baptist Church. He had been president of the Bank of Wedowee, a schoolteacher and an insurance agent.
