McMurray, Sr.] A former probate judge of Randolph County, James L. McMurray, Sr. of 309 Guy Street, Roanoke, died suddenly about 8:30 Sunday night, July 8, 1979, at the age of 56. He was stricken with an apparent heart attack at his home and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at the Randolph County Hospital. Jimmy McMurray, as he was known to his wide circle of friends, was an outgoing, cheerful, friendly man. He served his county as probate judge for one term, from January 1971 until January 1977. Several years prior to that, he was a member of the Roanoke City Council for more than one term and at one time was mayor pro tem. A native of Roanoke, he graduated from Handley High School as valedictorian of his class. He was associated with the long-standing family hardware business, W. H. McMurray and Company, for 29 years until assuming office as probate judge. He also had farming interests and more recently had been engaged in the insurance business. He was a member of the Roanoke First Methodist Church and had served as a steward. Surviving Mr. McMurray are his wife, Mrs. Rosalyn Lane McMurray; three sons, Jim Jr., Paul, and Thomas McMurray of Roanoke; one daughter, Lane McMurray of Roanoke; three granddaughters, Jennie and Julie McMurray and Amanda McMurray; his mother, Mrs. W. A. McMurray of Roanoke; two brothers, Tom McMurray of Roanoke and Bill McMurray of Pensacola, FL; four sisters Mrs. Bill Massey of Birmingham, Mrs. Frank Cauthen of Athens, Ala., Mrs. Joe Edwards of Lineville, and Mrs. Sissy Logan of Birmingham; three aunts, Miss Willie Lee Anglin, Mrs. B. F. Simms and Mrs. B. W. Brooks. Graveside services were conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock at Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke, with the Rev. William Dean and the Rev. George Ledbetter officiating. Pallbearers were Lewis Hamner, Doug Moring, James Ray Kirby, Jim Robinson, Roy Reeves, and John Robert LeSueur.
